Thats right, Reggie himself has stated that this games genre needs to be explored on the new console!
(For those of you that don't know, MMO means Massive Multiplayer Online games, and are usually refered to as MMORPGs. Imagine creating a character for yourself, a huge world to explore, meeting others from around the world in-game, playing as you wish - you could go to a set place to start up a "dungeon" type quest, explore and find hidden sidequests, collect and trade rare items, or just hang around in community areas, chatting about your favourite pop star. Existing examples include one set in the "Matrix" world - continuing the storyline after Neo dies, that new one set in space - where you don't have a character as such, just a spaceship, and loads set in "witch and Wizard" territory.)
This would be so cool, especially with the Mushroom Kingdom, the Lylat system, or Hyrule.

Mario wouldn't be very good. Who would you play? A Toad? Pokemon and Fire Emblem would work well, though.

A Super Mario Bros. MMORPG? Sure! You could play as a Mushroom, or one of Koopa's minions. Same thing with a Mario real-time strategy game.(Think WarCraft, or even better, Command & Conquer(which...was on the N64, Nintendo fans. Was WarCraft? Nope! Suck that, Blizzard Software!))

Mario MMORPG for the lose, Pokemon MMORPG for the win.
Pokemon is made for MMO.

In a lot of ways, MMORPGs are the preserve of the PC gamer, but a number of successful console conversions have been known (usually Dreamcast). I would not like to see a Mario MMORPG - at least not straight away. For a start, one major element of all MMOs are the conflicts between clans. While such a conflict sort-of exists in the Mario series (Koopa Kingdom vs. Mushroom Kingdom), it is largely a comical affair, with the hero against the whole of the enemy army. The way MMOs are set up would mean there could be no room for exploration of specific characters - if one person chooses to be Mario then everyone else in the world would have to be someone else, and I can't imagine having to settle for generic Hammer Brother 275 when I really want to play as Mario. I also don't see the series lending itself well to community building - unless it were to combine elements of all the party and spinoff games as well (meeting up for a Mario Kart race, or a tennis match). That would mean Mario game sales would be down. Zelda could work, but could also be dreary for the same reasons as Mario - you want to play hero vs. villain. Four Swords worked because it introduced multiplayer competition and collaboration, but on a larger scale you would again be doomed to play as generic Goron 56 or generic Moblin 97... all the while some poncey Link is strutting around on Epona somewhere. I like the StarFox idea, but I'd rather a similar concept was borne out in a new series, with planets and space colonies to fly to and from on a whim. Of course, the problems here are borne of something else - the sheer scale of it would be too much for even a top-end PC to handle, let alone the Revolution (which is quickly showing itself to not be all that concerned with keeping up with the latest PC developments). But, as has been said, Pokémon is ideal. For a start, there is no hero vs. villain - your character changes in nearly every single game, and your opponents are all equals - Pokémon trainers with their own teams. They all live in a sprawling world where there are wild Pokémon to capture and battles to be had wherever you may be. There are Pokémon appreciation groups, villainous gangs, shopkeepers... you could create a custom character, venture out into the world with a starter Pokémon and begin training yourself up. I could see myself lost in the game for days at a time. Trading and battling could all be done online - item sharing could be introduced... team battles would become meaningful if you're actually helping out a starter trainer through his first few battles - teamwork and friendships could be built... you could set up shop and sell off some of your Poke gear... even capture rare Pokemon and sell them on. It would be absolutely ideal... If you're having doubts now, then I hope Pokemon Diamond/Pearl have wi-fi battling enabled - then I hope to see an all-new resurgence of the series. Another that hasn't been mentioned is Animal Crossing. Not ideal in the sense that you tend to be a human in a land of animals - but if you could choose to be an animal, and live in any way you see fit, within a community of other real people, then I believe this could also work. Obviously there is no conflict to be wrought out... but if dozens of people are living together in a town then the town itself becomes the pride of all... each helping to keep it tidy, police it, holding events (imagine having a huge Animal Crossing birthday bash thrown in your honour by the other citizens of your town... great so long as you don't have anything planned in real life). Of course, Nintendo might be planning something all-new for this purpose. But we need that Pokemon game so's I can brush up on my battle tactics

Wasn't expecting a big discussion about this. XD I really was kidding. Kekekee! But sure. Why not "Pocket Monsters: The Race for Number One"? I'd take on anyone with my cuddly lil' Eevee, Xatu, and other Monsters. ^_^(Yes, I'd be the one wandering around just doing nothing, as opposed to actually fighting day-in, day-out. Kekekee.)

Rather than a MMORPG, I'd like to see Animal Crossing expand on the town visiting idea to allow players to live in your town for a while, not just visit it. So there could be some sort of apartment or hotel or something and they could move out of their own town and stay in yours... sorta like the animals do, except it would be real people. Of course the town owner would have to work extra hard to make sure everyone's happy, or else they could find all their trees cut down by angry villagers or whatever, but I'd like to see it. And depending on what the Rev's online system can handle, you could probably get some pretty large towns with this system. Just a thought.

Ah, so almost like a cross between Animal Crossing and SimCity, where the town owner becomes responsible for providing for the citizens. Intriguing ;D

Did I really write Mushroom Kingdom? I can't even remember including that! Bad idea, that one, and I totally blame my subconsious for that (apparently, he want's to be a Magikoopa! I'm not listening...) Pokemon would of course be the ultimate "Roxorr" for all the reasons that Fry mentioned, plus if a Pokemon Snap type element could be incorporated, all the better. For those ignorant newbies who don't know what Pokemon Snap is, check the database. N64 list. Personally, I would love a Starfox one. As a fan of the series, I feel I'm owed some more good games (Armada was good, but inconsistent). Sorry in advance for ramblingOK, imagine if you will, planet exploration, treasure / valuable ores to find and cash in, baddies to kill / join up with. Save up and buy customisable stuff for your Great Fox type craft, modify it for speed if you want to race others, storage size and defences if you want to become a merchant, weaponry if you want to be a pirate stealing from merchants, or a warrior fighting battles, or a bounty hunter to track and kill pirates. Customisable base of operations hidden away in a cosy asteroid belt of your choice. Then there's crew recruiting, save up for extra Arwings and Landmasters, design and build your own space-craft, I could go on.... I just mentioned Hyrule because I want to be a Goron with Geode-type crystals growing on me

So...basically, you want Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters set in the Lylat Wars timeline? Kekekee... Yes, I'm just as big on old PC games as I am with old Nintendo stuff. X3

Blizzard Reference
But StarCraft was released for N64,
Animal Crossing + SimCity
But Animal Crossing is like The Sims, and that was based on Animal Crossing. We don't want another "The Sims Online" disaster.

An Animal Crossing MMORPG? How would that work?
Personally, I think Fire Emblem would make a great MMO.

An Animal Crossing MMORPG? How would that work? I thought I explained how it would work in my extremely long post above. It wouldn't so much be an RPG - there wouldn't be any battling or anything - but it would simply be about the community: buying, selling, customizing, celebrating, sharing... basically everything else that makes MMORPGs interesting in the first place.
