As I'm sure you're all glad to hear, I'm working my way through the GBA pages and bringing them up to date. This is my project before the madness of work begins again next week.
But working on this section has made me somewhat sad. I have noticed that Nintendo's release dates over the next two months include no new GBA games - in fact we only know of one more GBA game AT ALL that Nintendo is planning to publish... of course being Mother 3.
Unless Nintendo has something secret up its sleevies, Mother 3 could be the final shout out the GBA has before recoiling and giving way to the Nintendo DS. Anybody else feel guilty pangs for not loving it quite as much as you should have done?

The DS is effectively replacing the GBA. It's rather impractical to support the GBA which is a very healthy system when the DS is just now blossoming and they have a new console to worry about. But the GBA still continues to get games. It's not dead yet, Nintendo's just kinda ignoring it.

Ha HA! So it's not 3rd pillar! It was secretly undermining the GBA the whole time! Now, they need to throw in a new version with a link cable and GBC game support, and they are golden!

OMG, of course! I mean, the sequel to Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald is coming out on the DS! So is basically ecery continous series on the GBA! Damn Nintendo and their stupid marketing strategies *grumble*. Mother 3? They're releasing it?!

Yeah, it was looking shaky for a while, but they've got a teaser page on the Japanese website, and Shigesato Itoi and Brownie Brown are apparently in the very final stages of testing.

It's a shame that the GBA, once a proud system, is overrun by ratty games. XS Games is the worst publisher, Destination is a porter gone very wrong, and Crave is just lame. But the DS should support old GB games, because the GBM refused, and Nintendo is essentially killing the Game Boy line. Another reason is that Pokémon is dying, which saved the Game Boy from being pathetic black and white ports of SNES games. The GBC had a relatively short life, blossoming from Pokemon, and a few other good color games. But those days are over. Mother 3 will surely push the GBA to it's very limits, 32 bits of power, trying to get to PSX quality. After that, there will be a few 3rd party games and the GBA will die. Nintendo.com will post a list of it's games. Stores will begin getting rid of the GBA section in favor of DS and PSP.
Too bad.

Hey. On the bright side, the Gameboy Advance got a very, very rippin' remake of Super Mario Bros. 3. "How can you make the best game better?" By adding in bonus worlds, bonus items, and things from past and "future" games, of course!(Super Mario Bros. World 1-1, Cape Feather, Chargin' Chucks, etc.) And then there's also the Final Fantasy series(excluding Final Fantasy III), Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, and maybe a few other choice games.(Dragonball Advance Adventure comes to mind, even though it was only released in Japan and Europe for some bizarre reason.)
Edit: Oh, and the trio of Castlevania games.(The first because of the awesome arrangements of past musics, the second because of all the Dracula's Curse references and enemies(Skull Knight, The Gargoyle/Leviathan, The Cyclops...), and the third because it is the true sequel to Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight(Castlevania: Symphony of the Night). I am so glad that game got a direct sequel... Even more so in that [SPOILERS]Juste, Ms. Belnades, and Arukado are all playable![SPOILERS]

Just a few issues I have with the last two posts:
I wonder where you got this from. Pokemon is still one of the most successful series of all time - each of the "main" games being a massive, chart-topping success, and many of the spinoffs doing extremely well, despite the somewhat questionable quality of a handful of them.
Please include "but only if you live in the USA or Japan where e-Reader cards could be used to unlock secret stuff"... Europe never got the e-Reader, and so we never got the secret levels, items or anything else you need to make it an excellent remake. The only thing different from the original in my version is that you unlock a level select at the end. Very disappointing (especially when compared to the other Mario Advance games).

That's odd. Oh well... If it makes you feel any better, we in the US never got the second series of bonus levels! Thankfully, someone was nice enough to make a GameSharked save file and send it in to GameFAQs... Maybe someone will do one for the Euro version?

I am also quite aware that the GBA could possibly go to an end. Notice that some developers make games on DS, even when the features of DS need not to be used at all?
Probably now even game developers DO consider DS as the heir of GBA.

I think if Nintendo wants to maintain the "third pillar" attitude, they'll eventually have to announce a true next-gen Game Boy.
For some reason, I always had trouble imagining a second generation DS, but maybe that's just because it's too soon for that.

A next gen-gameboy would suck if it didn't have any of the DS's features. Atleast give it the wi-fi, the microphone and the 3-D. We don't need the touch screen on the next GB, but it would be nice.

You think it needs the microphone but not the touch screen? Thats crazy.
I'm pretty sure they were playing it safe with the 3rd pillar comment, but since the DS has been going so well I think it has (or will, if it hasn't already) replaced the GB line.
And going back to the first post, I do feel guilty for not loving my GBA more, but if it wasn't such a port-fest for the first couple of years maybe I would've loved it more.

I would expect the successor to the GBA, if indeed there is one, to be more like the PSP and less like the DS - utilizing more traditional styles of game, but allowing for impressive 3D where developers think it is required. I think it will need to have wi-fi compatibility, but no mike or touch screen capabilities... just buttons.
But the question would remain, what would the point be? Unless the graphics usurped those of the PSP, there really would be no need for a new GBA while the DS remains so strong. The most popular Game Boy titles have already gone to the DS, and it already has its fair share of standard gaming titles as well as games that use its specialist capabilities.
