Getting used to the name and liking/hating it are two different things. We'll all get used to it eventually, but I still hate it. "Hate" is a strong word, and I'm quite interested in hearing what makes you "hate" it? Personally, I love the short, simpleness of the name, and the fact that its 1 syllable, unlike the play-sta-tion, x-box-three-six-ty, nin-ten-do-six-ty-four type names we've had since the beginning of video games (NES and SNES, if pronounced as "Ness" and "Sness", seem nice, too, but its actually su-per-nin-ten-do-en-ter-tain-ment-sys-tem). It should be noted how I really like Go when that was rumoured, and its for a similar reason. I like the distinct visual style. You don't see many words (...any?) with double i, particularly not next to such a 'big' letter as a w. Wii. Its interesting and appealing, methinks. Its original - not a "prefix-box". No Game, no Play, no Station, no System, etc, etc. Of course the last two could apply to Gizmondo and Turbografx, both of which are butt ugly, terrible names. But theres something about Wii. I like it. Of course the next debaste is the pronounciation - 'wee' or 'why'? Both could be spelt Wii, to keep the positives above, but both have their own problems. Wee, of course, sounds like urine, which is omg lol teh funny. Why would get rid of that, but then it has no meaning, and goes from being the "answer" (as mentioned in the name's explanation) and becomes another question. It could have an interesting marketting campaign ("still playing games the old fashioned way? Wii [why].) but it just doesn't seem right. Its not about asking more questions, its about something simple. We. Its simple. So yeah, I like Wii.

I like the reasoning behind the name Wii. I like the idea that a videogame system's title can be simple, understandable in every language, not possible to abbreviate and all-encompassing.
But I still think that despite that reasoning, they came to the wrong conclusion.
Wii is an unusual word, sure... but it requires you to explain how to pronounce it when it's read, and spell it when it's said. It looks ugly unless it's written on the official logo, and it's very weird - even a little embarassing - to say out loud.
Of all the single-syllable, simple names out there, there must have been at least one that wasn't this awkward, have so many connotations, etc. etc. Something that may not have expressed the Nintendo philosophy quite so clearly, but would at least have avoided the universal derision that has undermined the console's innovations.
But I'll admit that I have sunk into acceptance of the name. I don't like it, I don't like writing it, and I don't like saying it... but I just can't bring myself to fervently hate it any more. I guess this is why Nintendo gave us a week to get it out of our system. I'm ready to love the system again just in time for E3.

But DS Station and DS Download Station are not the names of actual consoles.

"Hate" is a strong word, and I'm quite interested in hearing what makes you "hate" it? I hate it because it's a bad name for what I think is a groundbreaking console. I agree with a lot of what Fry says, and he probably explains it better than I could. It's ridiculous, laughable, childish, and the urine, genital and sexual pun's will always be associated with it, even if you try to pretend they're not. Nintendo could've picked a name that accomplished the same goals of simplicity, universality, friendliness and innovation that didn't incite bad puns and an infantile mentality. It's undignified. Don't you think a console that was once referred to as a "Revolution" deserves better than that?

Revolution was/is a butt-ugly name, and completely against what the console represents - simple fun for the entire family.
And seriously, can you point me to at least 5 people that use the word 'wee' for urine or 'wee' for penis that aren't under 7 years old? I doubt it. Hell, if you can point me to anyone outside of the UK that uses 'wee' as a synonym for penis I'd be very surprised - I've never heard it called that before.

I've seen too many Wii jokes on the internet - it's real annoying, not to mention immature.
Me? I like the name Wii. I'll admit I like Revolution better, but I think Wii is a good name for Nintendo's new console.

I would like to make something clear... people in the UK do not call a penis a "wee". I don't know how this rumour came about but I've seen it everywhere. Maybe some small regional dialect uses it... but not one I've heard. It means urine. It means small. Listen to the Monty Python penis song... that pretty much gives you all the synonyms we have over here for the wife's best friend. ;D I could, however, point you to a thousand UK people within the immediate vicinity who use wee as a synonym for urine - most of them adults. "I'm just going to have a wee" or "I need a wee" is acceptable in conversation over here amongst both children and adults. It's not a childish word for urine over here... it's just a polite word for urine.

I, personally, have never heard it be called a wee before (and us Aussies usually steal quite a few of your sayings), but everyone seemed to be attributing it to the Brits. So who uses it, then? I can think of who would, which makes one half of the insult moot. And I guess you're right about the polite use of 'wee', but I still don't think 'urine' when I hear 'Wii'.

Revolution was/is a butt-ugly name, and completely against what the console represents - simple fun for the entire family. I guess it's a matter of taste. I always loved the name Revolution, and I thought it was gutsy (in a good way) of Nintendo to use it. 5 people? If that means you can already think of 4 people who use "wee" for urine or penis, then I think my point is already proven. In fact, I know an Australian who uses the pun as part of his name. (You are older than 7, right?) None the less, after Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman) got caught exposing himself in an adult theater, Bob Hope made the joke "Now we know where he got his nickname." Whatever the proper definition of the word "wee" is, my point is that the implication is there. Surely you've noticed it for the past 11 days. If Nintendo wanted a simple name that suggested inclusiveness, they could've called it the "Us" (which surely would've been more popular here in the US ). Or, if you prefer the "picture word," how about calling it the "All"? The two l's look more like the controllers than the i's anyway. Neither "Us" nor "All" is a very good name, but at least they don't look or sound as silly as "Wii".

1. N5 or Nintendo Ultimate Rev 2. New series 3. More games that use the connectivity 4. One more gamecube game would be good, Kirby GC or another Eyesheild 21 game 5. Ability to download Game Boy/Colour and Advance games

In fact, I know an Australian who uses the pun as part of his name. (You are older than 7, right?) Heh. Take that, me! No, seriously, I don't know anyone that uses wee when talking unless they are under 7 OR (and I forgot this one) talking to someone of that age and attempting to be polite. On a completely unrelated (though, at the same time, very related) topic, I'm against this whole 'tell people what you're going to do on the toilet' thing people like, anyway. Seriously, you're going to the toilet, thats fine, you don't need to tell me "oh, I'm going for a wee". Its not really relevant to me, you know? I'm rambling again. Back on topic, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, since I personally like Wii, and, to be honest, I do not want a name that sounds like your big old country.

Would you like it if it was called the Oz? I would personally DISlike it if it was called the Uk. But then that goes without saying... it's not a nice sound Uk... I just sat in a puddle of Wii! Just to clarify, we don't use wee as a polite word when talking to children... but as a polite word in general. We are quite vocal over here regarding what bodily movements we are about to undergo. Which will make Wii a hard sell here.

That was meant to be an or, but, whatever.
And Oz is pretty bad, too.

I thought this thread was the Revolution Survey, but its turning into the "To Wii or not to Wii" thread. I decided to add my input to the initial questions and so not to debate the Wii, which in my opinion is okay...anyway: 1) What do you want the Rev to be called, beside Revolution or (that stupid idiotic) Wii?Can't think...Nintendo Evolution? No thats terrible (2) What games, other than those suspected or confirmed, would you want to see on the Rev?Some of the Final Fantasy series returning (has that been confirmed already?) (3) What you you want to see about the REV-DS connection?Easily connected in seconds. No complex configuration stages? (4) Do you want to see more GC games after the Rev arrives? To be honest, no. Third party games should be ok though (5) What do you want to see on the Rev, other than those we've known already?DVD Player maybe? That hasnt been annouced already has it? Boy would that look stupid Later!
