I got it for my birthday and it's awesome!
Really, there should be more Mario games like this. The last original Mario platformer was SMW2:YI for the SNES. Kind of a shame that that's the final name of the game, but whatever, it's still a great Mario platformer.
Gah, it still isn't out in Europe yet.
I haven't played Mario vs Luigi Mode yet, but the main game is the BEST EVER.

Well, so far there're, for me, 5 Super Mario Bros following the "Mario and Luigi beat Bowser and save Peach, and they have to be platformers" formula: Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 2 (JP only), Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, and 16 years later, New Super Mario Bros.
And of all these, New SMB (Well, maybe I should call it Super Luigi Bros, I haven't tried using Mario on 1P mode yet) is the only one that features multiplayer modes... well, more than one - normal versus and minigame battle modes!
I planned to get it on 26 May, one day later than its release date, but ultimately ended up failing that the game is sold out in the first day. Hoping to have the yellow box, I didn't get the US version instead. This single game has split my scheme to have 3 games after exam into 3 parts!
The reason that has driven me to get this is its yellow box. It's yellow, and it made people looking the the JP version and abondon the US one!
Now the game's released for JP, US and AU already... but the EU version is not out yet.

Doesn't the original SMB, SMB3 and SMW all have 2-player modes? As in Player 1 = Mario, and Player 2 = Luigi? And if you meant simultaneously, SMB3 had the "Mario Bros." battle game (the All-Stars/Collection version even had a seperate mode dedicated to it), and I believe Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the Game Boy Color also had a Mario vs. Luigi type 2-player mode.

No. I'm pretty sure Mario Bros. was the only other game until now that had Mario and Luigi onscreen at the same time. Unless Super Mario Bros. Deluxe did...otherwise, the only time both brothers were together was Mario Bros...could be wrong, though. As for me, I loved my experience, although it wasn't perfect. Here's my review from my website: I’ve unofficially beaten the game. By that I mean I beat the Bowser Koopa/Bowser Jr. duo at the end. I still have a level or two to get through and several star coins and alternate exits to find. However, I will say that my playtime was 90% positive. I love the feel of the controls, the way the game looks, and the solid level designs that Nintendo put together here. There’s a lot to play (80 or so levels) which, while short, are well designed and quite fun to run through. The new elements that Nintendo put in to change up the gameplay are awesome - mushroom platforms that work like elevators, bounce you around or bop and weave as you stand on them. The towers and castles full of various dangers, new ghost houses (and the usual tricks and traps that you’d expect), switches that change around the environment, and the new powerups. The old fire flower is still your #1 choice by a long shot, but the new powerups do add some new challenges to the game, but aren’t really useful outside of finding exits and star coins. The mini mushroom is the most used of the three new powerups - it’s used to unlock two of the worlds, and there’s several small pipes that only Mini Mario can enter or high places that only Mini Mario’s floaty jump can reach that you’ll need this for. The Koopa shell is used sparingly in puzzles, and while it’s the most powerful powerup outside of the Starman, it is very limited in its other uses. It’s also quite hard to control once you get rolling. The Mega Mushroom is the most fun powerup, but it doesn’t work everywhere and it’s main purpose is to stock up on 1-Ups. Still, they’re fun, but compared to the Super Leaf, Frog Suit or Cape Feather, they aren’t the same by any means. Another shortcoming is the seeming lack of portability this game gives you. And by that I mean lack of save points. The only way you can save is either a) beat a tower or a castle or b) purchase a path via star coin signs. If this was a console title, I’d understand this setup. All of the Super Mario games on the NES didn’t let you save at all! But this is on the DS. A portable handheld. On batteries. Sure, the system came with an AC adapter. But on long car trips or plane rides (or whatever form of transportation you’re on), or at school or at work, you’re not likely to either have the adapter or be able to use it. So what happens if you run out of juice? You get to replay all of the levels you just beat because you couldn’t reach a castle/tower and/or used up all your old sign saves. Also, the game opens up a save feature AFTER you beat the game. So why couldn’t this be there BEFORE you beat it? Oy. Bad design choice. Outside of the powerups not impressing and the save feature conundrum, Mario is in fine form here. The music is pretty good, but not up to some of the classic Mario tunes of the past (but the enemies dance to it in a clever touch). The controls wonderfully implement some of Mario’s 3D moves into 2D form with much success. The game’s graphics are some of the best 3D visuals on the system. And it gives you a nice, retro feel that Mario platformers give gamers that makes you feel all fuzzy inside. Nintendo crafted a beauty here, and while it has faults, it’s a solid return to 2D and another excellent Mario game. Bring on Super Paper Mario and Yoshi’s Island 2! WARNING! Spoiling Sidenote - What was up with the Bowser corpse resurrection, btw? Bowser turns to bones at the end of World 1 if you use the bridge (which was kind of graphic for a Mario game…and why now? Bowser’s never been burnt by lava before…), you get to fight Bowser’s corpse in World 8, and Bowser Jr. plops the bones into a voodoo pot and out pops a bigger, badder, reborn Bowser for the final battle…quite strange. Let’s keep the necromancy out of future Mario titles, eh Nintendo? (despite it being a solid Super Metroid homage. Crocomire’s lava-fueled end was quite similar to this )

But they didn't have a simultaneous-platforming 2 player mode. Wait, did they? I don't have SMB Deluxe myself, but apparently it does have a 2-player Vs Mode where Mario and Luigi are on-screen at the same time. I don't know if they can affect each other, though.

You can't attack each other, but you can hit switches that cause blocks to appear on the other guy's GBC so he can't go past certain areas of the level.

Well, isn't the battle game ONLY in All-Stars and not in the original? Did I have false memory?
And yes, SMBDX has a simultaneous multiplayer mode. I was only counting originals, though. Wait.... I didn't say this is the ONLY game where you can play Mario vs Luigi!

The Mario Bros. battle game made its debut in Super Mario Bros. 3. I remember playing it quite a bit back in the day. And I think people got confused by what you said:
That is where people were thinking you meant there wasn't ANY multiplayer modes in preivous Mario games...when I think you meant a multiplayer simultaneous mode.

Well, isn't the battle game ONLY in All-Stars and not in the original? Did I have false memory? The Mario Bros. battle game was in the original SMB3 on the FC/NES. If you play a 2-player game, and you go to the same map space the other player is on, you enter the battle game where you can steal the other player's cards. And it's not just the Mario Bros. battle game, but there's a couple of other mini-games as well, such as collecting coins that pop out of a pipe, or kicking '?' blocks to find coins. It doesn't really add much to the game, but it's a fun diversion. The All-Stars/Collection version of SMB3 also included a dedicated version of the Mario Bros. battle game that I think is quite a bit more fun than the one in the main 2-player game.

You can't escape, you know. ;D P.S. This topic ain't about Mario vs Luigi modes in previous games. Eh, just had to work that in.
