The day before yesterday, Nintendo started the countdown to the unveiling of the code to obtain the Manaphy Egg item in Pokémon Ranger. I guess this might become one more of Nintendo history's famous codes. As you may know, you can transfer this item to Diamond & Pearl so that Manaphy hatches from it. Speaking of recent Pokémon spin-offs (a topic that was being discussed in another thread), I recommend Pokémon Mystery Dungeon over Pokémon Ranger if you're not a Pokémon fan; it's cute and different (it can become too addictive if you go obsessed with completing the missions, though). And Pokémon Ranger, well... I started it just a few days ago; a friend of mine who is a hardcore Pokémon fan disliked it, but it's still another story you may enjoy if you're a follower of the game series. And you have the bonus of being able to get Manaphy if you have Pokémon Ranger (but if you don't get it, you might ask a friend of yours for a Phione when Diamond and Pearl come out in America ).

Both Ranger and Mystery Dungeon were travesties. They're obscenely hard and don't offer the enjoyable experience you can get with a regular Pokémon game. I've already returned my copy of Mystery Dungeon and would have done the same for Ranger if not for the promise of a Manaphy code (I was, literally, planning when I would go to Gamestop to trade it back when I read about that).
Even hardcore Pokemon fans can be put off by these two games. Trust me, I was.

I love Mystery Dungeon. I'd been waiting a while to see exactly what it was about, and it didn't disappoint me at all. In fact, it hasn't left my DS for a solid month. I'm afraid to go back to my AC town now. The same goes for my girlfriend, two best friends, two siblings and three cousins. We're addicted.
THANKS, MYSTERY DUNGEON!

It seems to be a love it or hate it game. Everyone I've talked to about it either thinks it's horribly boring or brilliantly addictive.

Damn you Nintendo, forcing me to buy crap games! First Pokemon Channel and now this?

Haha, Pokemon Channel was funny. It was the most pointless game ever, and could be completed with minimal input. And then you get a shiny rare Pokemon out of it at the end (or at least us Europeans did). Mystery Dungeon is actually more disappointing for me, as it's pretending to be a deeper game experience than it actually is. Pokemon Channel was trying to be nothing more than what it was. And Nintendo isn't MAKING you buy anything, you know

Isn't the entire point of online trading that I can complete my Pokedex without needing to buy extra crap because someone (ie one of you fellas) will hook me up?
I'll have a Phione but we'll trade and then trade back Manaphy for Pokedex reasons, thanks guys.

Yeah man, I'll score you some hardcore Manaphy. The buzz'll keep you going all night. It's the proper stuff as well, not this fake Manaphy you see on the streets. That sh*t is just Magikarp with a different name... maaaaan!

Mystery Dungeon is actually more disappointing for me, as it's pretending to be a deeper game experience than it actually is. Pokemon Channel was trying to be nothing more than what it was. ...You people make me feel guilty for loving Mystery Dungeon so much. Pokémon Channel... I guess it was bad as a game, but I look at it as more of an interactive DVD. It cost about as much as one, and did more. So it was fine by me. I'll probably get (and enjoy) Ranger anyway, though. The only Pokémon games I haven't enjoyed so far were the Pinballs and Link/Trozei.

Seriously? I loved Trozei. I think it actually trumped all the other puzzle games on DS (that I've played... so far). It is probably the only Pokemon spinoff that made me quite obsessive about catching 'em all... as much as the RPGs! I never managed it... but then it does get quite hard I'm also rather fond of the Pinball games, but I get fairly bored with them after not too long. Which is a shame. Pokemon Dash was an ultimately disappointing package. I do own Hey You Pikachu, but I've hardly played it. Channel wasn't a good game, but it did make me chuckle a few times. Oh, and then there's the TCG (and related games) which never interested me one bit.

Ah, Pokémon Dash... I was so unimpressed by that game I'd forgotten it existed. Still, not too bad for £5.

Nobody here ever got Pokémon Box? There are some bonus Pokémon as well. My problem with the pinball ones is that there were always just two boards (one per each main version). IMO they should have made like 4 or something in the R&S one considering the number of existing species at that time. What I liked from Mystery Dungeon is that it shows a new perspective of each Pokémon species and a new interpretation for existing moves and abilities. Ranger is being somewhat difficult (that Salamence boss was a pain in the ass). So far, my biggest complaint about Ranger is how annoying some of the villain characters are. Just half a day left before they reveal the code, and nearly 3 months before we can trade the egg .

All this talk of Poke-spinoffs reminds me of my idea for a Hey You Pikachu sequel for the Wii where you can talk to any Pokemon of your choosing.

I liked Pokemon Pinball (the original - never picked up the sequel). However, I will agree with Johan that it needs more than two tables and some boss ones (so does Metroid Prime Pinball while we're at it, but thats for a different day). Maybe there could be a DS sequel with a table for each of the 8 main games of the generation - combine that with some cool boss levels (they had this covered in the original), chuck in maybe a new feature or two (could battling be pulled off somehow? Metroid Pinball's shooting sections are different to the regular game but are still pretty snazzy), and, to paraphrase a particular weapons merchant, I'd buy it at a high price.
