You know what I've just realised? Assuming there is a 50-50 split of characters there is either going to be a hell of a lot less Mario characters than a typical Mario sport game or we are going to get craploads of Sonic's stupid friends. Yay.... Shadow.

Next Generation has an article about this game, and apparently, Shigeru Miyamoto is substantially involved.

Jeffery said in a phone interview that the game is being developed as a joint venture between Nintendo and Sega. "The majority of the physical development is being done by Sega Sports Team, with very heavy supervision from Mr. Miyamoto and his team as well," he said.

When asked to clarify whether or not Miyamoto, creator of classic Nintendo franchises such as Mario and Zelda, is actually directly involved with the development of the Olympics-based videogame, Jeffery said, "Absolutely, yes. That’s what makes it particularly exciting for us."

I'm starting to wonder if it'll end up being anything like Wii Sports. (With the Wii version, at least.)

The first screenshots for Mario & Sonic Olympics have been released at Gaming-Revolution.de. We have a glimpse at some of the additional characters that are participating now; alongside the confirmed ones (Mario, Luigi, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles--Yoshi remains unseen), we now have Peach, Bowser and Dr. Eggman as playable characters. Cream the Rabbit also appears in one shot, but her position leaves her playability questionable.

They actually showed some video for this at the press conference. It looked pre-rendered, but it was cool to see Mario and Sonic running beside each other with competitive glances.

If it comes down to it, I think six of Mario's "Big 8" would make it (Donkey Kong is kind of a gray area. Toad is the most questionable, but if Eggman can run a 100 Meter Dash...)

I'm sure we'll see several characters from both franchises in background roles--Cream looks like she's there to just start the race off in that one screenshot.

Even with Cream it's even. An interview confermed Yoshi as well. I aslo assum Wario and Amy will be in there. I just hope they stop at Shadow. He was a pretty good adversary(SA2 had a well ddeveloped story). After that they get pretty lame.

With two franchioses we could easily get 16 good characters. Lets hope they try to keep it many yet few. Both franchises hhave some pretty bad back catolog of characters.

Pfft, it's gonna be the "Mario 8" plus Waluigi, Daisy, Birdo, and Toadette. Always will be. Sonic will equal that out with the cast of Heroes. Guaranteed.
