www.planetnintendo.com/nindb/test/header.htmlThis is a test layout I have been working on for Nintendo Database's title and menus. Updating this won't require me to update every page (again) you'll be glad to know. The footer is not complete yet, and I still have to play with the menu font colours so they're not all so... blue... but I want feedback on it all. Especially the new-look logo. And for those of you who are long-time NinDB readers, don't fret. Grumpy Kirby is being given a retirement home in the footer of the page.

Great Test Layout. Creating a page like that just shows how creative you are. Have you started on the Famicom/NES Sections yet?

Wow, quite a dramatic change but I really love it.

I just love the colour scheme, but... that logo consisting of of that red circle and the letters reading "Nintendo Database"... is a bit distracting. I like the old banner with the SSBM characters better. It's more attractive as well as representative.

To be honest, I really don't like it.

Looks good, but I don't think the logo works. If that's the only place you plan to use that red, it might seem odd.

To be honest, I really don't like it. Don't be coy, let it all out. From your excellent site-designy point of view, what do your eyes say wrong with it. Also note that if I had to scrap the whole design in order to keep the new logo I would, but I see what you mean about it being distracting. Still, plenty more design to go into it. I don't really like the blue/grey contrast, but if I were to change the background I would have to make some major site edits. So any suggestions in terms of colour schemes would be good. Oh, and because no-one has mentioned it so far... yes, it is based on SSBM's menu system. And the red circle is required for the logo to make any sense - it's a play on Nintendo's own logo.

Chage is good... but I'm not at this point in time inclined to prefer the new design...
Maybe it will grow on me, but after a good careful look at it, I'd honestly say that I like the current banner much better - the red I do not like. The colours you say are still being worked on, which si good, because as they are they look not quite right.
I'm only giving my honest opinion, and I must say that it is YOUR site, and so my opinion in the end is quite irrelevant if you have your mind set on the change.
It looks decent (the new design) and still quite presentable, but I'd have to say I prefer many of the current visual features over the new ones (something that attracted mw to the site in the first place) - although, I doubt a design change will affect my visits to the site...
Again, this is simply MY opinion, out of many (including your own)... ;D

My mind is set on certain things definitely changing. These are: I want the title bar to stretch across the top of the screen. It currently looks scrappy only reaching partway across - a throwback to the site's fixed-width days of old. I want the obligatory Gamespy banner to be squeezed into the top area. I like the way it sits in the new layout, and I hate the way it sits in the current layout. I want a new logo. I experimented with various ideas, and as soon as I hit upon this red-circle idea I had found one I really liked. Like I said, I would be happier reassembling the whole layout than lose the logo. The footer is being locked to the bottom of the page rather than sitting under the page content like it does now. I am also happier squeezing the stats link and grumpy kirby into this bottom area.
Stuff I don't mind changing: Colour scheme (including background, menu bars, headings, subheadings, fonts, etc... it's all controlled by CSS now, so it's not the end of the world if I have to change it) General design (I am fond of the idea of an SSBM-themed layout, but it's not necessarily one I have to stick to)
Stuff I would like to incorporate but haven't done in this new layout: Notice how the layout doesn't lend itself well to individual designs for each system subsection. I would like to try and do this if possible.
But there are several web designers here. What do you think is wrong? That's what I need to know more than anything. I've tried altering it so the background is black and it doesn't look too bad. I might put it up later once I've made a few tweaks.
If you don't like it because you have an aversion to any change, then you shall be ignored, and possibly destroyed.

Don't be coy, let it all out. From your excellent site-designy point of view, what do your eyes say wrong with it. Well, it just seems incredably bland. The old site design had a modernesqueness to it that this one seems to have lost. The blue and grey really don't look good together, especialy with the red in the logo. And the logo font seems too genaric.

I'm going to play with the colour scheme, throw in one or two more interesting visual elements I have in mind, and possibly chuck in some content from an existing page so you can see what it would look like when it was finished. My only concern, as always, is that if I change the background to black it will end up looking too much like The Mushroom Kingdom.

It looks cool. I don't know which one I like better, though.

I agree with Narf, the current layout looks much better, IMHO... I think it's mostly because of the blue, I don't really like that... Perhaps it would look better if it was grey, but then again, that would make it look a lot like it is now... I don't really like the logo, either. Sorry for being so negative

I quite like the logo, perhaps make its colours a bit less invasive, tone it down a bit and it will look pretty good.
As for the overall stuff, pretty spot on design, but the blue...nah. I can envision a nice spectrum of grey that would go well with that design: not just a few shades, but lots of different shades of grey (imagine if you shone grey light through a glass prism, what grey colours would you get?). And maybe a gradual-blendy effect down the side-bar. That would be good.
EDIT: I'm thinking about my silvery Nintendo DS when I think of a good colour scheme...just try looking at yours from many different angles.

It's like looking at a grey cloud through a grey window in a grey room. I am not having an all-grey layout. That's like the ultimate in boring.
