Hang on to your hats, sports fans. Mario Super Sluggers has just been announced. The game is the successor to Mario Superstar Baseball. As you might expect, the game takes advantage of the Wii's motion sensors. Players make a pitching movement when they pitch the ball and bat by swinging the remote. Fielding also uses the motion sensors as well. There's no picture up yet, but the game is set for release this June in Japan.

Well, it was announced before, we just have more info and a release date now.
Some people were angry that Nintendo just showed off another Mario title, but I think the opposite. It's a small event, so little was shown. It's hard to make up a whole new franchise for Baseball, which requires lots of players. Plus, it's a perfect fit for the Wii.

I'm praying that it is not becoming another Mario Party. Since some time after the Wii's launch, it seems that the entire videogame industry started to fall in quality. Or so it seems to me. Games starting to appeal to a wider audience, and as a result, "skills" had been rendered useless in today's games. So let's hope this game is not going to get stained by the new standard and its creator, the Now Loading Company. Of course, a sport title like this needs to be fun in multiplayer terms, but it IS a sport game, where some traditional elements, like techniques, should stand.

Another crappy mario sports game. The original Mario Baseball was excellent! Heck, EVERY Mario sports title was excellent! Why do I seem to be the only one really pumped for this game?

The whole Mario Golf series. Almost every Mario tennis (except 64).

This is one reason why I am not very interested in the Mario series. Even though, their are a lot of people around planet Earth that enjoy the Mario franchise, while the franchise is like Nintendo's main fuel for keeping the company running, I really miss seeing some nearly forgotten Nintendo franchises.

You don't enjoy the Mario series simply because it has more games than the other franchises? That's shallow thinking if I've ever seen it!

I loved Wii Sports baseball, just missed the fielding aspect (and loathed pitching...), so I'm quite interested in this. Do a good job, Namco!

Edge magazine had an interesting bit of editorial about this. They were trying to work out whether Mario was simply stuck onto games to make them sell, or whether there was a reverse effect - once the developer is asked to make a game with Mario in, do they put in the extra effort to make the game better?
Mario Tennis 64 is one of my favourite games on the N64. And while I'm not particularly good at the other sport titles, they're not bad games by any stretch of the imagination. It is a shame they're not more all-encompassing of other/new franchises... but the quality of these games may be reliant on Mario being in them!

I remember hearing that Mario Golf was originally going to be an ordinary Golf game (evidenced by the human characters) but Camelot really wanted to make a game with Mario in it.

There are reasons some franchises are never brought back, and I think those reasons should be looked at before opinions are made. That's a good point, there are good reasons for some games (poor sales for instance) or not appealing to todays gaming audience. But I have a feeling that we could see some old franchises return. If the people who played those games as kids grow up and get into the industry, they could be the ones responsible for reviving them. Edge magazine had an interesting bit of editorial about this. This hasn't been pointed out in the disscusion so far, but did you hear that when MSS was being demostrated live in front of many game journalists at the Nintendo Media Summit, some of the motion controls were not being recevied by the game. Makes me wonder, why it just an early build or could that happen in the final game?
