No, I'd rather it be more like SMB2 where you can pick which character you want whenever you want and use their individual abilites to get around. Not give Mario the platforming, have Luigi race Mario, have Yoshi shoot enemies, have Peach run away from one of Bowser's henchmen, have Wario go on scavenger hunts, and have DK go fishing, if that's what you were thinking.

What I'm not getting is, why would you want that? Look at Sonic's crappy 'play as every one of his hoboty friends' games. Do we really want Mario to do that? Yes.

The problem I see with this is that if everyone plays nearly the same, then, meh, hows it any better to play as 10 characters than it is to play as just Mario? Of course differentiating them leads us to the shitty Sonic friends syndrome. Hence, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Stick to playing as Mario (and a little bit of Luigi and Yoshi) for the main games, sidekicks can just show up in spinoffs.

And it basterdized and ruined the cap system from Super Mario 64 N64. SM64DS is an absolutely awful game and should not be made the ideal for Story Driven Mario games. I still think Super Mario 64 64 is my favorite 3D story driven Mario game. DK64 did a fairly good job with character swapping, but for Mario I think other characters (save for Luigi) should be playable in Spinoffs and Spinoffs alone.

SM64DS wasn't... BAD! It just kinda missed the point... It was when I had to do that Switch run in the Ghost House, and it was literally impossible to do with the stylus interface. I cleared it first time with the D-Pad...
The stylus interface was awful though... Stop sliding around the screen!! Stay where you goddamn are!!

Putting 64 DS's god awful control system aside anyway, 64 DS did nothing with the 4 character lineup that 64 couldn't (or didn't) do with a lineup of 1 character. So I see nothing there to suggest that we need more characters in the next Mario game.

64 DS was an abomination on the sheer basis that it forced you to play as certain characters in a fairly linear game. If it were like DK64 where the world is a huge map with lots of nooks and crannies, great. But Mario 64 was still pretty damn linear for a 3D platformer and it was painful to have to run back and play as Wario just to be fucking Metal. Wasn't the whole point it was Metal MARIO in that game anyways? If they did it proper, anybody could've used anything OR they just scrap Wario and Yoshi altogether and leave it the way it was supposed to be: Mario and Luigi.
That said, I do want a legit platformer with the four plumbers involved. Wario and Waluigi need some Mario platformer love.

I still maintain that those two need to co-star with Mario and Luigi in a Mario & Luigi 3.
That aside, years ago when I was in "brainstorm SM64 II ideas" mode (the 90s to be exact), I thought of something kinda similar to Luigi's role in SMG. You'd have to collect a certain amount of green "L" medallions (like the ones from that one mini-game in Mario Tennis GBC) and Luigi would help you. His abilities included jumping higher and activating special green "L" blocks that Mario couldn't see. I think this might have been inspired by being able to play as Mumbo Jumbo in Banjo-Tooie or something.
Then at some other point (can't remember if it was before or after the above idea) I had this idea for another Mario game which featured Yoshi as a power-up again, and Mario being able to carry fireballs as ammunition (which was restored by Fire Flowers). Luigi and Wario were also playable, except Luigi could jump higher and had green fireballs while Wario had all his moves from the Wario Land games and could throw big spiked iron balls. In addition this, Mario could unlock a secret power-up that turned him into "Ninja Mario", thus upping his awexome acrobatic skills and replaced the fireballs with shurikens.
Yeah, I was a little overactive imagination-driven nutcase. ;D

Hm. I don't know. I am quite fond of the idea of having all sorts of characters playable. Look at Super Paper Mario.
Also Sonic Adventure was a good idea in a way. It was like having a bunch of different games and stories in one just by selecting a certain character. While SEGA may have goofed a bit in Adventure 1, number 2 seemed to make up for it. Their not perfect, but I bet Nintendo could pull it off. Afterall Mario, Luigi, Peach, DK, Wario, and Yoshi have all had their own games, why not combine it all in one collosal game?

Yes, another fantastic Nintendo game that was in no way wasted its additional characters by having them more involved in cut scenes than in any actual gameplay. Use Peach to float across occasional gaps. Switch to Bowser in boss battles that take place in closed quarters... I think I actually dislike that game more than Yoshi's Island DS.

I hated playing as Big the Cat and Knuckles in the first as well as Knuckles and Rouge in the second.

Sonic and Shadow's stages were the only reason I kept SA2 when I happened to get a free copy of it (I sold mine in disgust). Everything else was horrible, and SA was better in its character balance. And I also didn't like SM64DS, but mainly it was the controls. This topic has spiraled...

I loved both Sonic Adventures and Super Mario 64 DS. I though the controls were fine.

You seem to dislike these games more than you should. Trivial reasons, like cut-scenes which I personally enjoyed immensley. (I wish more Mario games had stories like this) And Yoshi's Island DS, well I barely saw any flaws there. Anyway, Baby DK is in Sluggers, I heard.
