Character-specific attacks are such a staple of the series too. They were in Super Mario Kart, even if they were only used by the CPUs. Given how most of these characters seem to come in pairs or sets, it'd been nice if they'd kept special items for certain characters.

Atleast I'm not racing against 11 Funky Kongs online because he has the best stats/special item.
That's the only positive thing I can think of though. Some of the special items were annoyingly fun. Go go giant bananas.

And I hate whoever came up with the ideas for special cup (Bowser's Castle and Rainbow Road in particular). This game's Rainbow Road is particularly cruel. The biggest disappointment with Bowser's Castle is how similar it is to the one in Double Dash. I was also disappointed that the old stages didn't finish with a classic Rainbow Road, rather opting for a Bowser's Castle stage. Haha, can you imagine 12 players trying to navigate the crazy SNES Rainbow Road stage? It'd be a massacre!

Seriously, they should have a Rainbow Cup just to mess with people. Five Rainbow Roads just to really make you cry.

There could also have been a Bowser Cup full of castles and a Wario Cup full of stadiums/coliseums, not to mention one full of regular "raceways" or "circuits" or whatever you wanna call them just for beginners.
Actually, what they really needed was a Custom Cup. You could pick a handful of your favorite courses and order them however you like. DK: Barrel Blast had this, and it's one of the things that make me like it better than recent Mario Kart entries.

Each one longer and harder than the last. I agree with the Rainbow Cup idea, although as Da Robot said the N64 Rainbow Road would probably not be a good idea. Not that I'd mind of course.

I don't think I agree with Fry's idea with the Rainbow Roads... I guess people would be more agreeing on the SNES version being a pretty... uh, difficult one. Don't Todd me.
And the GC one should best the DS one too. Generally, the more "sheltered" the course, the easier. Not that the GBA one is the toughest though.
If the Rainbow Road is complexed enough, I should be convinced to give it a try. Not that I've made up my mind to get a Wii though.

Seriously, they should have a Rainbow Cup just to mess with people. Five Rainbow Roads just to really make you cry. Exactly what I think about since a long time. What I also wish, they should include tracks from the Mario Kart Arcade GP games into the Retro Cups. A lot of people surely never played these two games (including me).

Believe it or not, those tracks have practically nothing to them. From what I've heard, they're generic Ridge Racer-style courses with no gimmicks. To make matters worse, half the "tracks" in that game were actually the first half only backwards.

Not as much backwards as mirrored at some parts and like season or weather changes. Diamond City went from summer to winter.
I love Mario Kart Wii. I love the Wii Wheel (without the wrist strap, gets in the way). Bikes are eh but KOOPA IS BACK IN 3D and LUIGI IS AS GOOD AS HIS 64 SELF.
Item rape can happen but it's not too hard to recover, not like Double Dash.

I have finally got the game and I have to say this
Item rape is just like it was in all the other Mario Karts. It's not special here. The only difference now is you have a higher chance of getting hit by an item. The only time you'll actually lose because of an item is when a blue shell hits you at the end. Otherwise, I've been able to make it back from anywhere.
In other words, if your losing from the items constantly, you probably wouldn't have won any way.

No one has really complained about losing because of the Item Bombardments it's just the fact that it happens so often.

I must be playing a different game because it never seems to happen that often to me. In fact I've found that most of the time I get 'raped' by several items there is a POW block with them, which rapes the others and negates a lot of the disadvantage associated with being hit.
When it has caused me to actually lose I've just shrugged it off. Eh, whatever, cry some more guys.
