I personally prefer the US one, since it actually shows fighting, which is what the game is about. The Japan one looks like great game artwork, but personally I think the US one would looks better for drawing attention.

From the poll, I would say the most likely of the group would be Wario and Kid Icarus. Wario would be a heavy brawler similar to Ganondorf, using brute strength. Kid Icarus' fighting style would probably be similar to Links. Stanley would be interesting to see, his moves would probably be a mix of Mr. Game and watch and medium weight brawlers like Mario and Luigi.
More than likely in the next game they will either cut some of the side characters out of it and put in others, or keep the ones they have, and add more. I think that in the third game Nintendo will put in more opposites of characters. In Melee, they added characters like Bowser, Ganondorf which are enemies of characters in both games like Mario and Link. I think that they will add some more of the heros enemies in the third installment of the series. I could see King Deedee and perhaps Wolf for Fox. Other main characters would be harder because creating a more unique character would be harder to include in the game.
Just for the sake of pontificating, The main character from Harvest Moon would be interesting to see in the game, like a A -> move would hit another char with an axe, scythe, or hammer. And of course, the usual 'never gonna happen, but would be sweet' characters: Bub and Bob (fighting style similar to Ice Climbers) And either George/Lizzy.
