Sonic was supposed to be SSB Melee, but was dropped due to lack of time. One reason being the Dreamcast was discontinued in March, and SSB Melee was released in December. The only problem with this statement is that SSBM came out in December 2001, and the Dreamcast was still getting support until Spring 2002. However, I do think the 'lack of time' is a better explanation. I remember reading a statement by one of the developers saying they'd add Sonic if they have enough time.

I'm glad they didn't add Sonic, actually. SSBM is supposed to be a celebration of all things Nintendo, not Nintendo and Sega.

Sonic was not supposed to be in SSBM. Whoever told you that was lying. I have never heard it said in an official interview (and I followed THEM very closely), and I have never heard anyone suggest it was the case. It's a Nintendo franchise game. There are more than enough Nintendo characters to go around without having to pull in those of other companies. Oh, and I did write Takara, but then I wasn't sure, so I changed it

Okay, the quote I referenced from Yuji Naka on the subject was: "It isn't true yet, but as for the future, I don't know. I have a really good relationship with Nintendo, so we could do that kind of thing-but it is not realized yet."
So, he actually wasn't refering to SSBM. But maybe some game in the future...

But it doesn't need to be a fighting game does it? People keep ranting about Kingdom Hearts style action RPGs, but it could work in many other ways as well. It could also be a NxC style Strategy-RPG. I could even go for a Card Fighter's Clash-like game.
