SSBM is an absolutely awesome source of Nintendo lore, and I through the trophies section I'm discovering games that I've never heard of or played that were developed by Nintendo. One such game was Mach Rider, and I immediately sought it out and decided to play it to death.
Now, I have some questions for those who have actually played the game, because I cannot figure these out. Is there ANY ending to the game at all, or is it just one of those games that will loop infinitively no matter how many times you beat it? Because on a code site, it says that you can get a 'hidden ending' if you make it through all 10 stages without bumping another vehicle. And for those of you who have played the game, you probably know that such a task would be rediculous to complete. Kind of like that hoax about the gold yoshi that you would receive in Yoshi's Story if you "Got every last coin".
Lastly, I have gotten Mach Rider to turn red colored and he suddenly sports infinite ammo. But only once, and I never figured out what caused him to change, and I've searched but I haven't found any explanation as to why that would happen. Think anyone can help me out?

That last one sounds like a glitch in the game. I've noticed that emulated versions are really buggy, but if you were using a hard copy then it would be surprising. I've not heard of any method for doing that. As for the hidden ending, I've seen a screenshot of something like that, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were true (sadly I suck at Mach Rider ). I don't know if "not hitting" enemies actually means not crashing and exploding though... seeing as bumping enemies from the side is quite an important method of restocking ammo. However, it wouldn't necessarily be an impossible challenge, just a very hard one.

For the red colored Mach Rider, it almost seemed intentional, as not only did he have infinite ammo, but his rate of fire went up drastically, and once I died, I lost that ability for good.
As for the screenshot, any idea where I could find it?

I'm afraid not. It was quite a while ago now. I think it looked a little like the screenshot of Mach Rider on this page (which is the arcade VS. Mach Rider) - but I know there's a similar one out there somewhere. I'll have another look.

I got a save state with the Rapid Fire Mach Rider! This is in the VS. Mach Rider emu used on Nestopia, which actually manages to run very well. I guess for some reason, this time, he's pink, haha, but this is the effect that I am talking about. www.newreris.com/machridervs.ns1Right click and save as This is for MACH RIDER VS, remember

So the Vs. series of arcade games were actual different from the NES versions. You learn something new every day.

Yeah, it was the Playchoice games that were identical. The VS. games are (mostly) different. I guess the fact arcades were capable of more than the NES helped there (though parts of various VS. games, such as Clu Clu Land and Ice Climber ended up on the later-released Disk System versions).

I'm a persistant one, if you can't tell. Well, I figured out some stuff. First of all, the pink/red Mach Rider is definately NOT a glitch. In Mach Rider VS, (this trick at least works I believe 100% of the time on the first level), if you manage to get through the first course without touching any of the Quadrunners, in the following level, you will be the red/pink Mach Rider with infinite ammo and rapid fire. (Would Nintendo Database like to be the first place to distribute this info? ) Now I'm down to the original Mach Rider, because I had unlocked the red/pink dude before (that's what began this search, I found Mach Rider VS after posting here). It's gotta just be some variable that I'm not figuring out. I have noticed though, that if you say, destroy enemies on certain levels in a specific order (for example, on the first level of fighting mode, if you kill ten enemies...) then the game will play some little jingle like you have been awarded something, but there is no visible bonus that I have been able to find. Either way, I'll keep looking. You can help if you want (I would appreciate that much) or just gimme some ideas to try. Thank ya.

Man, being miles away from my files and games is killing me. I can't remember if there's a score in Mach Rider and I have no way of checking! Argh! But if there is a score, the jingle could be a small bonus point reward. If not then I assume it's just a little "congratulations" jingle to say you're doing well. Hmm, how odd though. As VS Mach Rider was supposed to be a quick arcade experience they may have made the same powered-up Mach Rider harder to get in the home console version. It's probably attained in much the same way, though it could be limited to certain game modes. Dodge/shoot cars and obstacles as much as possible and report back to me on the findings

There is a score, but it seems odd that the jingle would be for "You're doing well!". As you probably know, I said you must kill 10 of the pink ones in a row, that means not hitting the green ones. If you hit the green ones, it messes it up and no jingle.
queer ass game. =p

Perhaps I'm really dense, but does that mean that you know the trick?

That's a point... I think the manual says something about shoving the enemies off the road. Perhaps it's something to do with that...
