Original Post: As noted in the "Currently Playing" thread, I've been playing Midway Arcade Treasures and Namco Museum 50th Anniversay, so I'm feeling a bit nostalgic. (After all, I'm actually old enough to have played some of these games back before they were considered retro.) Let's use this thread to chat about classic arcade games and compare high scores. For now, I think I'll work on Joust 1 & 2, Spy Hunter, and Galaga '88. I'll post scores for these a little later. And just to encourage the spirit of competition, I OWN YOU ALL IN SPY HUNTER!!1!1 (No I don't.)

All right, maybe I don't own you all at Spy Hunter. Still, I think I have a respectable score considering how hard it is to control this version.
Spy Hunter (default settings): 46635
And the others:
Joust (default settings): 95700 Galaga '88 (default settings): 180520
Any takers?
I'm gonna have to work on Joust 2 a little more. It's cool, but it's hard! I usually lose all my lives on the third level.
On a side note, the Namco Museum 50th Anniversary has a good selection of games, but it would've been nice if there were a few more. Gaplus would've been a good inclusion (and if they'd also included Galaga Arrangement, the entire series would be present). Another Pac-man game or two would've also been welcome, especially Jr. Pac-man. But, oh well. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Namco Museum.

Double Post -- Bonus Multiplier X2! Anyway, I guess no one else is interested in high scores. Either that, or I intimidated everyone with my totally awesome gaming skills . . . Nah! But here's a Joust 2 score that I'm not too embarrassed about, achieved on default settings, from level 1 and no continues: 54850. And I beat my Galaga '88 score: 253970. And speak of the devil, Namco Museum Remix has just been announced for the Wii. It includes new 3D versions of five classic games that take advantage of the remote's motion control. It also contains the original versions of nine other classic games. Gaplus, Pac & Pal and Super Pac-Man are nice additions, but the rest are ho-hum. How many times does Namco really need to re-issue Mappy?

Holy crap, Spy Hunter. You have no idea how many stories my dad has told me about how much he loved to play that game back when it came out.
Well, he's told like maybe two of those stories. But yeah man my Dad could probably own you at that game when he was in his prime.

I might turn this thread into more of a scoreboard for organization. midwayarcade.com has Shockwave versions of several classic games that you can play for free. You can also post scores from the NES versions of classic Nintendo arcade games, like Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, etc. Ditto for Sega. (wanderingshadow mentioned Golden Axe. I might have to rip out my Genesis for that.) The only rules I would set are that gameplay settings must be left at default, you must start from the first level, and you may not use continues. You may adjust the control configuration and screen options to your liking. The Metal Slug series isn't that old, but I guess Metal Slug Anthology counts as a classic arcade compilation, so we could post scores for that.

Patience, Nester. It takes time for a scoreboard to get going. Especially when it's as broad as this one is. Anything retro with a score counter is a wide array of games. Anyway, when I get off my SCIII kick, I'll throw in Midway Arcade Treasures/Namco Museum and post some scores up.

It's not one of the games you have listed, but I scored 1,360 points in Golden Axe. Is that good enough to get on the board?

I've been working on the Robotron, uh, series. (If it can be called a series.) Anyway, I'm not that great at Robotron. I'm more of a Smash TV fan, and I just racked up a 1 credit score I can be proud of--probably my best of all time! I still need to work on Total Carnage, tho.
Robotron: 2084 -- 153,975 Smash T.V. -- 5,941,610 <-- I made it halfway thru the game for this. Total Carnage -- 64,373

These will probably be my last scores for a while. Being that I'm practically the only one posting scores, it's starting to feel self-indulgent.
Galaxian: 10,160 Galaga: 170, 570 Rolling Thunder: 103,800

Something I like about these old games is that it's as if they cleanse the gaming palette. After playing too much of the modern convolutions, it feels good to get back to basic, raw gaming. Their beauty is in their simplicity, and it really clears your head.
But maybe I only feel this way because I grew up in the era of arcades. How many other people here are old enough to have arcade memories?

I'm old enough to remember the local shopping center (it wasn't really a mall) having an actual arcade. The oldest arcade I can remember playing is Donkey Kong.
