That's a game I was fairly sure would never actually materialize. Wasn't that a game they were talking about before the Wii even launched?

Yeah, the first trailer was actually revealed at Nintendo's E3 press conference in May 2006. It had a much different style then; resembling the original GameCube game. The game was not mentioned or seen again until a year later in 2007. The first full trailer revealed a completely new art style, which is the one it now uses. Again, all went quiet for the rest of 2007 and nearly all of 2008. EGM's Quarterman claimed that the game had been canceled. Square Enix quickly, and conspicuously, refuted the claim, saying they had "every intention" of releasing the game. This was very reassuring considering that it's one of the few times a company did not respond to a rumor with "we don't comment on rumors or speculation." Finally, a new trailer was included with the Japanese Wii version of FFCC: Echoes of Time. An official website was launched soon after, and there's been a steady stream of info ever since. It was revealed in an interview over the summer that The Crystal Bearers was not even in production when the original teaser was shown in 2006. It was just a concept render. Furthermore, the game was apparently close to cancellation at one point. And that, in a nutshell, is the development history of FFCC: The Crystal Bearers.

Double post!
Here's the TGS trailer for The Crystal Bearers, featuring Layle in a tuxedo (humming the Final Fantasy theme music), some snowboarding, some surfing, some FFCC: Xtreme Beach Vollyball (or something), and a cute Mailmoogle near the end.

Here's an English version of the trailer, but with really bad video quality. UPDATE: Here are Jeremy Parish's impressions at 1up.com. He seems genuinely impressed by it, and mentions twice that it has some of the best graphics he's seen on the Wii. Crystal Bearers offers its own curious blend of homebrew Achievements, too: Every time Layle does something new (using a new skill, or simply interacting with enemies in a different way than before) a little Achievement-style notice pops up to congratulate the player. It seems to be one of many little touches that suggest Crystal Bearers aspires to go toe-to-toe with more powerful systems. It's simply one of the best-looking Wii games ever, and it truly stands out both on its choice of platform and within its series.

Here's a round-up of Crystal Bearers articles and videos from TGS. IGN hands-onJoystiq hands-on - This article is a little bizarre. No wonder I stopped reading Joystiq. G4 off-screen walkthru - Not terribly interesting unless you're paying attention to the gameplay. The commentator doesn't have anything interesting to say. Gamespot interview with Akitoshi Kawazu - This is kind of interesting. I don't know if it was just me, but the audio was out of sync.

This is interesting. According to andriasang.com, the Japanese commercial for The Crystal Bearers is going to feature the song "We Weren't Born to Follow" by Bon Jovi, off of their soon-to-be-released album The Circle. That's unusually America-centric for Square Enix, isn't it?
