I thought I'd start a thread on this series because I have been reading about it lately, and Ring of Fates is about to hit store shelves in the US. Plus, My Life as a King is supposed to launch with WiiWare, and The Crystal Bearers is also on the way for the Wii. It's interesting how that one GameCube title is expanding into a full-fledged Nintendo exclusive spin-off series. The developers keep a blog for the series that Square-Enix translates into English. Are these sorts of things common Japan? Also, I noticed that some of the entries further down the page seem a little... disturbingly pedophiliac in nature. Anyway, I wasn't a huge fan of the original game, mainly because I didn't have three friends with GBA's and link cables. The game had beautiful graphics and art direction, and lovely music. The single-player experience was just too dull, tho. I'm glad to know the new games are geared for single player gaming.

GameTrailers has uploaded a bunch of new gameplay videos for Ring of Fates. They also have the opening pre-rendered movie, which, like Final Fantasy III on the DS, is a lot prettier than the actual in-game graphics. It makes me wonder if they should've gone with sprite-based graphics. They also have a new Japanese trailer for My Life as a King, which would probably be a lot more interesting if you could understand Japanese. Anyway, here's the English language trailer from GDC. So, My Life as a King is a city-building simulater? Kind of like Final Fantasy: SimCity? Should be interesting...

Old thread revival! Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time for what appears to be both the Wii and DS. From what I can tell, the two versions are cross-compatible. Perhaps this is a throwback to the GameCube-GBA link-up of the original? It seems that the game is playable online with both versions, and you can use the face of a Mii as the face for your character (altho it looks really freaky in the screenshots). The game is due out in Japan in 2009. Incidentally, we haven't heard much about the other Wii Crystal Chronicles game, The Crystal Bearers. As far as I know, it has not been officially canceled, but it is not expected to be shown at this year's TGS. The last trailer shown of it is from last year's E3, and the most recent mention of it on the developer's official blog is dated last March, stating that development is "proceeding smoothly!!" Perhaps it morphed into Echoes of Time?

Good to see some more interesting ideas for Wii and DS connectivity. But will there be enough of a reason to buy both versions though if you get (nearly) the same experience from both versions? EDIT: There appears to be some confusion going around the web with this game, some sites say it is both a Wii and DS game while others are saying it's a DS game that connects to the Wii. Anyone want to clairfy which one is right?

Here's IGN's article about it. They say it's for both Wii and DS, and that both will retail for the same price in Japan. Other details: It's a sequel to Ring of Fates on the DS, and the exact release date is currently January 29, 2009.

Hmm. It seems to imply that the graphics on the Wii version are going to look the same as the graphics on DS. I'm not sure I approve of that. Even the Wii version of Geometry Wars looked better than the DS version.
Does Nintendo own some stake in the Crystal Chronicles series, or does Square-Enix simply intend it to be Nintendo-exclusive? I noticed that Nintendo published the original game in North America, and Ring of Fates in Japan.
I have to admit, I have a certain affection for the series. Maybe it's because it is Nintendo-exclusive, but I also like the art and music styles, as well as the often experimental nature of the gameplay. Maybe I should write an article about it...

The Wii one looks slightly better...
It is good to see the large quantity of 3D DS games on the horizon.

Here's another trailer. According to GoNintendo, it confirms that it will be online "worldwide." So, that implies a definite release in North America and Europe. Not that there was much question on the matter. And here's a bunch of screenshots, including the freaky Mii faces. It looks to me like they'll be implemented as masks, tho. EDIT: IGN has a new article that explains a few more details. In particular, the relationship between single- and multi-player gameplay.

Well, it is a little freaky looking but it's nice to see more developers using Mii's. Adventure mode sounds interesting as it is both a single and multiplayer game. It also good to know that there is some sort of text chatting option, hopefully they open it up to voice chat. EDIT: Here's a scan from Famistu.

No I don't like Miis in games other then Nintendo.
And let's hope there is no lag here.

5-1 says Square Enix is reworking Crystal Bearers into Final Fantasy XIV. Square needs to reach its three-game quota. However, those Miis look fugly. I think I'll just stick to the normal look.

Actually, I'm pretty curious to know what's happened to The Crystal Bearers, myself. The game already went through one major overhaul between E3 2006 and TGS 2007. But now, all traces of it seem to have been removed from the official Japanese developer's blog. Combined with rumors I've heard from the gaming media about its troubled development, it was probably quietly canceled over the summer.

New footage for the game. EDIT: EGM has a rumor saying that The Crystal Bearers was quietly cancelled. That's not going to surprise many people now is it?
