I suppose I can understand why they'd want to find a specific way of differentiating the two series. Still, when you look at something like FF7: Advent Children, I think it just looks laughably, embarrassingly bad. At least their DS games are still allowed to look cute. Cait Sith? I'm not familiar with the character. I think the cat is just the logo for Echoes of Time. I've heard some fan speculation that the character seen in the artwork, who I guess is named Charlotta, turns into that cat since they both seem to be wearing the same bow.

It's not Cait Sith. Cait Sith is fatter.

According to IGN, only the Wii version will have the trailer for The Crystal Bearers. And speaking of trailers, here's yet another trailer for Echoes of Time, this one from Jump Festa '09. It highlights the four tribes.

It's not Cait Sith. Cait Sith is fatter. He also shows up in that Final Fantasy mmorpg looking like this so I figured they gave him a different design again. Shape shiftin' Charlotta seems a lot more likely though. Anyway there's a good chance of me buying the Wii version if the game supports local 4 player mode.... and Gamecube joysticks. I guess Wiimote controls wouldn't be so bad, but then I'd have to go out and buy some more. That would still be a lot cheaper then that bullshit gameboy linkup gimmick from the first one.

I've never seen that design for Cait Sith, its kinda creepy. He also wears a crown and hurts people with megaphones.
I'm generally happy with the FF:CC games so I'm likely to buy this if it comes out here.

I think the cute vs. realistic differentiation depends completely on which audience they are pandering to. For the games on Nintendo systems they seem to favor a cartoony look akin to the sprites in the SNES games, while on PlayStation systems they appeal to the ones who started on Final Fantasy VII. For a while on the PS1, they seemed to flip-flop between realistic and cartoony with FF8 and FF9, while FF7 was both realistic and cartoony in different areas, and the Chocobo games are always cartoony. I mean just compare Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy Tactics A2 to Final Fantasy XII. They are games that take place in the SAME world, but yet have different artstyles!

There isn't any new news to report, but I was hoping I could divert a little attention away from the silly hubbub about Sonic.
For those of you who think you'll buy Echoes of Time, do you plan to get the Wii version or the DS version?
I intend to get the Wii version because it'll be easier for me to play online, which is the main point of the game. (I hope some of us here get to play together.) Also, my Wii library needs to be filled out more.
Gamestop currently lists the Wii version as being more expensive than the DS version, but I expect that to change. They were announced to have the same price in Japan, and they're essentially the same game anyway.

There is now a North American teaser site for Echoes of Time. There's nothing there yet, but apparently "full site coming soon." Still nothing new on the English news blog. It occurs to me that with the Japanese version being released on the 29th of this month, it's only a matter of time before someone rips that new trailer for The Crystal Bearers and puts it online. EDIT: New screenshots of Echoes of Time from Famitsu.

Well this ain't good, Famitsu reviewed both games and say they both have heavy lag and there isn't much benefit for playing the Wii version. Scores: Wii 8/7/7/7, 29 points DS: 8/7/7/8, 30 points Here's the full info. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (Wii: 8/7/7/7, 29 points; DS: 8/7/7/8, 30 points): “A very simple, straight-on follow-up to the last game. The balance and tempo ensures things never drag on much. There are niggles, but it’s simply a lot of fun. The game’s difficulty changes with the number of players, making things a bit difficult in single-player. It depends on the environment, but both the DS and Wii versions have heavy lag. A shame. There really isn’t much benefit to playing the Wii version. I would’ve at least liked to see the graphical quality bumped up to Wii standards.” Source.

Those are still pretty good scores, tho. I'll still probably buy the game. Too bad about the online, but then, we're talking about Nintendo consoles, so what's the surprise?

Famitsu has more screenshots showing off different costumes that reference other games in the series, including Yuri from Ring of Fates, the main character from the upcoming Crystal Bearers (possibly named Layle), and Leo, Pavlov and Sarah Palin Chime from My Life as a King. I think that's pretty cool, actually. Also, let's not forget that the new trailer for The Crystal Bearers will likely find its way online this week, since Echoes of Time will be released in Japan on the 29th!

According to Siliconera, the official North American release date for Echoes of Time is March 24th. That's just two months away! They also reconfirm that both the Wii and DS versions will cost the same: US$39.99. On a side note, I've noticed that Ring of Fates still costs $39.99, despite that Final Fantasy IV DS, which was released later, is now only $29.99. I wonder what's taking so long for a price drop.

Square-Enix is stingy, that's why. I have to say that the original Crystal Chronicles was fine, but the GBA link hurt it considerably. The ability to play it online via DS or Wii ought to really improve the experience. I don't plan on picking it up myself, but I hope the rest of you get a joy out of it.
