Fryguy. Do you routinely go around and kick kids and proceed to tell them there is no Santa? HOW DID YOU KNOW!!

Here are four more I thought up yesterday. All of them do the same basic thing: attack the nearest opponent to copy their form and steal their moves. However, each one varies a little bit from the others.
Ditto (Pokémon): Okay, technically a Pokéball item, but still. Ditto uses Transform and unleashes some rapid-fire A-button moves on your enemies.
Gooey (Kirby): Gooey, meanwhile, uses stronger Smash attacks.
Mimi (Super Paper Mario): Mimi copies an opponent and uses their B-button moves...
Doopliss (Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door): ...while Doopliss, much rarer than the other three, unleashes the copied character's Final Smash.

These Trophy Assist things are good for item ideas that were made of living characters.
How about a non-offensive version of Lakitu?
Lakitu: When summoned, he hovers above the stage until you fall into a pit. Lakitu will then catch you with his rod and return you to a safe spot (and fly away). Lakitu can be knocked off easily.

I like that. Or how about this... Balloon FighterWhen summoned, he grabs hold of a player and doesn't let go, floating around the stage freely and wildly (in the player's control). His balloons can be popped early, though. And I heard somewhere that Ditto was going to be in Melee, but the programming was too difficult because it caused major slowdown when he transformed into the player that threw him.

Using the debug menu you can get Ditto. You toss the ball, he appears then disappears without doing anything like his programming was never finished. this looks authentic.

Sakurai has said Ditto was going to transform into one of the characters and attack, but it was causing too many problems too late in the development process, so they just snipped it.
Hence why there are only 29 Poke Ball Pokemon in the game!

And 29 stages? Poor Akanea... Refartless (hehe), the Mario 2 Bosses would all make cool assists. Mouser would chuck Bob-ombs, Fryguy would burn people and bore them with his British colloquialisms, Clawgrip (if they care) could chuck rocks.. It'd be good fun.

Trying to get Ditto to appear using the DeBug cheat on Termina results in this:

What about something like a Floormaster or a Wallmaster from Zelda? It could run up and stop the other players from moving while the player who released it can attack them.
100th post!
