Well, lately there have been about 2 mentions of possible N64 SSB cameos/references, so I made this other thread. I think this one is sane enough and hasn't been mentioned in the respective page. When you lose a life in SSB games and you still have one or more lives (or it's not a Stock Match), you appear from the sky standing on a platform. This is similar to how you start a new life in Mario Bros.: Is it just a coincidence? >_<

That was one of the first things I noticed when I played the original game. It sure seems like a likely reference, but again it's hard to prove. I may mention it anyway - I'm revising the SSB cameos page(s) at the moment.

Yeah, I remember noticing that too when I first played SSB64. I'd definitely say it's a reference, because how many games have your fighter revive on a floating platform? Usually, at best, you just come back into the fray right where you died

And did you know that several things from the Super Smash Bros. series came from Kirby Super Star? For some examples: |1.| Some movements of Master Hand and Crazy Hand resemble some movements of Wham Bam Rock's hands. |2.| The heart-recovery parts of SSBM's All-Star Mode resemble those Maximum Tomato recovery parts in Kirby Super Star's Arena mode. Also, it's BGM is an arranged version of those rooms in Kirby Super Star's "The Great Cave Offensive", where you save game and/or grab a Maximum Tomato. AND |3.| Shielding in the SSB series is similar to shielding in Kirby Super Star.

I am actually working on the Master Hand moves at the moment, as many of them are actually based on the gloved hand that appears on the Continue/Quit screens in the Kirby games.

The mechanic of getting knocked off the stage and regenerating reminds me heavily of Balloon Fight. I'm not sure if that counts. However...
The food item, despite being billed as an SSB-exclusive, bears a striking resemblance to the food from Kirby Super Star. Even the healing sound effect sounds the same!

I've generally dismissed the food item as they do not appear as "Kirby" food, but as photos of real food, and therefore while it's possible they are inspired by KSS, they are not an obvious cameo - however the sound effect is a good point. I shall look into that later.
Don't think the Balloon Fight thing really stands up. The point of Balloon Fight wasn't to knock people off the side/top/bottom of the stage. Its no more derivative of Balloon Fight than it is Urban Champion.
The shield being similar to the KSS shield is something I had totally forgotten about, and I think has some legs. I will look to adding that.

The glove and Master Hand are related, aren't they? I feel like, somewhere, there was a joke made about that...
But regardless, Wham Bam Rock and Master Hand share similar movements, BUT that's no real different than, say, General Onyx in Oracle of Seasons, Rudy in Wario Land 3, DK in Donkey Kong '94, or any other "GIANT HANDED BOSS" in a video game.

Funny thing is that the platform thing is more evident now when playing at the Brawl stage called Mario Bros. I've ever wanted some stage like that since they made that Mario Power Tennis court based on it. Crash, while recording some video, I just realized that the Save Hut song contains by itself some notes from the Float Islands stage (Kirby's Dream Land). Listen closely just before the end of the loop: (Kirby Super Star version)No wonder why it sounded so calm!

The game mechanics are not based on Balloon fighter. It's based on King of the Hill.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Koqtl4DYNmUCrappyCaptureDevice's video on Wham Bam Rock. His moves and animations are recycled for Master Hand and Crazy Hand. The platforms seem Mario Bros. inspired. I mention it in my Nostalgia guide at any rate. The food seems inspired by Kirby Super Star and Yoshi's Story. I don't know about N64 Smash, but in both Melee and Brawl it has cetrain foods that don't seem likely in other way. (The strange melon from Yoshi's Story, the orange glass and starred ice cream from Kirby Super Star.) Yeah, All-Star Mode is based off of the Arena. The music is from Save Huts in the Great Cave Offensive.

The only food item in the N64 game was the Maxim Tomato.
The fragment in the Float Islands song can be heard from 00:19 to 00:32.

(The strange melon from Yoshi's Story, the orange glass and starred ice cream from Kirby Super Star.) well, the 'strange melon' in both games is just a musk melon, so I wouldn't say that they're related. musk melon is crazy popular in Japan, and they have melon-flavored everything. great, now I'm hungry! :<

Thanks Mopinks! I had no idea it was based off of any real type of melon. In CCD's YouTube 6 part video about items in Melee (I forgot which installment had food in it) he speculated it could be a lime or the melon from Yoshi's Story, and I got most of my info about the Yoshi/ Kirby food connection from said video.
