Tom Nook using Tanuki moves is baseless conjecture. It has nothing to do with the character. Not to mention Nook has no fighting potential, period, nor do the human characters from AC. Fox, Falco and Captain Falcon may have had their movesets made up, but they come from environments where they're expected to be prepared to fight. It's a completely different thing. Well then, why is Zelda on the battlefield? Granted, she comes from an action game, she still had no attacks in the games. Magic DUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRR!!!

TV Eye - I know Zelda fights in at least 4 Zelda games. She helps seal Ganon in Ocarina of Time and Four Swords Adventures, and uses the Hero's Bow in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. As for Animal Crossing folks, I'd rather see someone else in the game than any of them, really. I'm stoked they have a stage, and there's a bevy of items to pull from (and the Pitfall is arguably my favorite new item), I'm hard pressed to think of a feasible, proper AC fighter. It's just too peaceful for me to see any of them in battle. Sakurai may surprise me, but I doubt any of them will pop up. And I do like DiU's idea of randomness...it's appropriate.

DiU's idea would be hillarious, but yeah, I can't see them fighting. But lets wait and see. Sakurai is one crazy basterd.

I don't mind the idea of an Animal Crossing character.
And when the time comes... I don't think it will be such a big deal to most fans either.
You might appreciate the character once you get to learn more about it. Super Smash Brothers isn't the King of Fighters tournament. You don't have to be a fighter to enter. You just have to be a representative of your "world" and be able to do it justice. Sakurai said it himself... Smash Brothers is an event that anyone can enter... it doesn't matter if the game is a platformer, action, RPG, racer, rail shooter, puzzle, RTS, ANYTHING should be ok.
Animal Crossing is a unique series on it's own... and it's bursting with that special creative Nintendo energy that is the life source of Smash Brothers. You may not think so now... but I think Animal crossing is worthy of Smash Brothers representation... just because it is peaceful!
What? Yeah... you see... Brawl looks like it's taking the idea of "worlds" and expanding on that... even building a story around it. Each world is vastly different from the other... and by now we're all very familiar with Hyrule, the Lylat system, Zebes, The Mushroom Kingdom, Popstar, and others.. You can see the differences between each world.... "Smashville" or the Animal Crossing world adds more uniqueness to that because unlike the others.... it's a peaceful and quiet world with very little or no violence at all. Somebody has to represent that world.
They may have to be a little creative with the moves... they may have to imply that not all is what it seems in Animal Crossing... but that's what I'm looking forward to. I'm sure you wont' be dissapointed that badly once the game is released.
I should point out that I don't like Animal Crossing. I actually think it's one of the most depressing games I've ever played. You start off in debt and you have to work by doing meaningless jobs only so you can pay off your loan and fill your house with useless crap. I get enough of that in the real world.... I don't need to do that in a game. However... where animal crossing fails for me as far as gameplay is concerned... I give it credit for it's unique graphical design... and the bizzare cast of characters. And I give it credit too... because... even though it's boring and depressing... it's unique. And that's where Nintendo never fails. And that deserves representation in Smash brothers if you ask me.

Not a bad argument, there, NinjaRygar. Still though, I'd rather see someone else take the roster spot than anyone from AC, but I won't argue if one does sneak in. I'd be quite curious to how they would play.
Heh, King of Fighters. I need more SNK fighters, that I do. *end tangent*

it's a peaceful and quiet world with very little or no violence at all. Somebody has to represent that world. Am I the only one who doesn't see the entire point against a playable Animal Crossing character in that sentence? One thing every SSB character has to their name up to this point is that they're characters of action. Zelda has defended Hyrule more than once, in her own "I suck until the very end of the game" sort of way, Game & Watches often depict dramatic events like diving for treasure or saving people from fires, and Peach has proven herself more and more recently to be an action Princess. Star Fox and F-Zero are located in futurustic, violent settings. The only exception to the rule is Dr Mario, who doesn't even count because he was put in just so Sakurai could use the Fever music. Animal Crossing, though? Peaceful. Boring. Average life expressed in a virtual world. I see the artistic value in it, but I don't see--especially when every major character from the franchise appears in the background of Smashville--how you can make a fightable character out of the franchise. Yes, the moves are there, but would it really be in the spirit of Animal Crossing to put a character in that situation? I hardly think so, and even then they'd probably move so lethargically. Because holy shit, country life--totally moves a mile a minute. Animal Crossing has a stage, music, and items. That's a lot more than other Nintendo franchises can say. If we're lucky we might get Assist Trophies, but I wouldn't count on anything more than that.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the entire point against a playable Animal Crossing character in that sentence? If you lived in a stupid little country town and a dragon, a gorilla, a swordsman and some chick in a robotic suit came in and starting smacking things around, you'd want one of your town members to go and kick them out, too. And we all know the seemingly normal ones are always the craziest. Think Hot Fuzz, but less brutal murders and more just pounding things into the atmosphere. And if you haven't seen Hot Fuzz... you suck.

Here's what they should do with an Animal Crossing character.
Let's say you unlock it, then it asks you questions (just like in Animal Crossing) and how you answer them determine your characters features (also in Animal Crossing). That way, each person had a different...person.
As for weapons? You've always got axes, fishing poles, shovels, nets, etc.

I just thought of something... So far EVERY series featured in Smash had a fighter that was feasible for it... Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Wario, Yoshi, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, Metroid, Starfox, Fire Emblem, F-Zero, Earthbound, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Game & Watch and even Metal Gear all ARE action series where the protagonists CAN do action and COULD fight...
But Animal Crossing is a series known for peaceful, quaint, non-violence. Animal Crossing is completely counter to the Rules of Smash! (In this world, trophies FIGHT!)
What if the 'chosen' fighter from the world of Animal Crossing, being imbued like all other trophies with the aspects of HIS world, refused to fight and that is what 'broke the rules' and started the plot of Subspace Emissary?
It'd definately be a clever end-game twist that would be worthy of the most talkative character shown so far, Solid Snake, to comment on, as the Metal Gear series tends to explore themes similar to that.

If the Animal Crossing stage is named "Smashville" because players can name their own villages, then this probably means that the main character of the Animal Crossing/Animal Forest series will be named "Smasher", "Smash Brother", or something else similar. Even though there is a male and a female version, while there are some that are part of the stage, they'll probably be costumes. Also, the number of human Animal Crossing characters are equal to the number of Animal Crossing players around planet Earth.

But Animal Crossing is a series known for peaceful, quaint, non-violence. Doesn't mean you can't go around town and bash the townsfolk with your axe for 'fun' does it? No that I do do that kind of stufff (because I'm not into AC or any other 'life-simulator' games).

All I'm saying is... somebody should represent that world because it's vastly different from the others. That's what I was getting at... though I'm not always very clear with my words.
