The original Sonic the Hedgehog game used only one button. I think its simple yet exhilarating play was its virtue.
And given that this game’s controls are also simple, I think it personifies his distinct characteristics.<Side Special Move: Spin Dash>Yeah, you have to have this.Hop into a supersonic Spin Dash. If you charge it up just a bit, your speed will increase.
It’s also possible to rise up while spinning.Spin Dash, jump. A two-hit combo. Then keep pursuing with a midair attack! And do a Spin Dash in midair to return. That too?<Down Special Move: Spin Charge>By holding the Control Stick down and tapping the special-move button, you charge up your spin and do a Spin Dash. This may feel better for some—there’s no pop.KEEEEEEEEEE!<Up Special Move: Spring Jump>And his up special move is the Spring Jump. That spring launches you wayyy up in the air. That’s high! You might not use it on the ground much, but rumor has it that if you do, the spring that remains can be used by other characters.Ah! It’s true.

Two spin dash attacks seems kind of lame, but hopefully they'll feel different enough for it to work.

So all that spin charge move does results in a more charge up spin dash?
And that is one hell of an Up B for jump. Hopefully that's only on the ground. I wonder what his standard special could be?

Think of the Side+B being like Yoshi's Egg Roll, and the Down+B like Jigglypuff's Rollout. You don't charge the forward special but you charge the down special.
And technically the Side+B is supposed to be the Spin Attack, whereas the Down+B is the Spin Dash.
In Sonic 1, by pressing down while running, Sonic would curl up into a ball and could also jump as a ball... That's the Spin Attack!
In Sonic 2, by pressing down and a button while stationary, Sonic would curl up into a ball and charge up his Spin Attack... That's the Spin Dash! Sonic could also do his Spin Attack from Sonic 1 in Sonic 2, and both moves stayed with him in ALL his 2D games.
They are considered distinct though related moves even in the Genesis Sonic games.
As for the Spring Jump... Sonic could never really jump good... He can jump decent, but not good enough for Brawl without the Springs from Casino Night Zone.

This is a preety lame update. Since we already knew most of this from his video. Exept the buttons on which you had to press.

I think it works great! It's clear now they're using the 16 bit genesis games as his base.
I mean... in the orginal Sonic game, all you could do is roll and jump. That was it. The roll is his side B.... it probably acts just like it did in Sonic 1, since, in Smash Brothers when you hit Down while running... you'll just duck.
And down B charges one up, like in Sonic 2. I'm sure his fighting style will seem VERY natural when the game comes out. It doens't look like he'll have bubble sheilds, chaos control, homing, fire, nonsense from the recent games. Classic stuff! I don't know what his neutral B will be though.

I don't know what his neutral B will be though. If they are using Genesis Era Stuff, his Standard B is likely to be his Super Peel-Out, which has him run really fast in place without curling up into a ball, and charge forward at maximum speed. Now, that move isn't from the Genesis games, but is from Sonic CD of the Sega CD & Sonic Triple Trouble of the Game Gear, so it's FROM the era.

No one mentioned this but this update shows a new landing spot on the Defino Plaza stage.

I'm a bit confused by the two Spin Dash attacks. Maybe one charges and one doesn't, but the explaination for the one that supposedly doesn't also says "If you charge it up a bit, your speed will increase."
And "there's no pop"? Does anyone know what that means?

I'm very happy they chose to stick with the SA shoes, and not SOAP.
Anyways, I like the Genesis moves, very cool. Sonic will be fun to play as!

I like Sonics moves so far. The only problem is that I can't think what other attacks Sonic really has. Maybe something from Sonic the Fighters...

So one of them makes you do a little jump, I guess? Interesting... There are plenty of other attacks they could've used... Sonic Wind would probably make a good standard special and Light Speed Dash probably would've made a better side special, imo. Oh well... I'm very happy they chose to stick with the SA shoes, and not SOAP. I don't think they'd be allowed to use the SOAP shoes without getting some kind of agreement from SOAP anyway. And I doubt Nintendo are wanting to advertise trainers in Brawl.
