You can't compare going underwater to falling in a bottomless pit that just happens to have water in it. I went underwater in Sonic Adventure just fine. Likewise, I fell in bottomless pits full of water in Sonic 3. Comparing differing level designs to differing character traits is stupid.
Sonic's never been able to swim. Ever. If he can in this game, it's the first time it's been inconsistant, and it's Sakurai's fault. Sega have remembered it - in Sonic & Mario Olympics, Sonic wears a life jacket during water-based events.

You'd rather have Sonic be a crappy character in Delfino Plaza or The Summit cause he sinks to his doom then have him be a non-crappy balanced character that can swim like the rest of the cast?
Who cares anyway, it's smash bros. I don't remember wall jumping with Link in Orcarina of Time either etc.

In a way I understand where KChu is coming from--I'd be mildly upset if they disregarded something unique regarding to Megaman (all I can say is, watch out for custom levels with spikes in 'em!). But at the same time, it's a little nitpick compared to the fact that Sonic is in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which is about as epic as you can get for a character you like. At the end of the day I'd take increased damage on a spike platform over an instant KO if it meant I got to play as Megaman.

Sonic swims, apparently. Folks who went to E For All claim he wears a life vest XD

Give Sonic Conker's water wings or life jacket in M&S... and then Kirby his goggles. Haha.

This looks like an awesome stage! Better than that scrolling Mountain. I also like the Balloon Fighter fish cameo. IN-joke.

If Sonic HAS to swim, then he has to have his Lifevest from Mario & Sonic. =P
If Charizard HAS to swim, he needs to hold his tail above water.
If Samus swims... well, I can't make that make sense.

I don't find Charizard being as controversial as Sonic. Pokémon type match-ups have not mattered in the SSB series and it's fine the way it is (if "water vs. fire" is what you guys mean).

If Charizard HAS to swim, he needs to hold his tail above water. What the hell...? That was never in any of the games. Only the anime. So it's probably not going to happen.

We've never really seen a Charizard dealing with being in the water in the games... so who knows?
I'd say the PokéDex suggests it'd kill it, though. Submerging it's tail would, I assume, cause it to go out.

Yeah guys... hate to ruin the speculation, but this is probably going to end up being like the Metroid level in Melee with the rising acid lava. I don't think they'll be swimming.

Import a Charizard to Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald, and fight underwater after using Dive.EDIT: Okay, that was a stupid answer, sorry -_- And the Pokédex seems to have cause and effect switched from what I understand. The flame seems to be an indicator of those Pokémon's vitality and not the source of it.

Charmander's Pokedex entry in Pokemon FireRed:
"From the time it is born, a flame burns at the tip of its tail. Its life would end if the flame were to go out."
