Sonic wears floaties in MvS? Wow. I can't decide if thats cool attention to detail or just another dot point in the 'Sonic is a lamewad' list. Gameplay is much more important than staying 'true to the characters'. If swimming is going to be a very important aspect of the gameplay, and it wouldn't surprise me if there were multiple water levels and even some subspace water ones, then every character needs to swim.

How was swimming confirmed in this update? Because King Dedede is in water? Could it be because *gasp!* he is falling?

Because he clearly looks like he's swimming? And we know characters can swim?
So its not exactly 'confirmed' based only on this update, but close enough. He's swimming.

Charmander's Pokedex entry in Pokemon FireRed: "From the time it is born, a flame burns at the tip of its tail. Its life would end if the flame were to go out." Does that mean it dies from a strong gust of wind? ><

We've never really seen a Charizard dealing with being in the water in the games... so who knows? I'd say the PokéDex suggests it'd kill it, though. Submerging it's tail would, I assume, cause it to go out. Import a Charizard to Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald, and fight underwater after using Dive.EDIT: Okay, that was a stupid answer, sorry -_- And the Pokédex seems to have cause and effect switched from what I understand. The flame seems to be an indicator of those Pokémon's vitality and not the source of it. Probably the best answer all day.

Yeah, I think there's one more which supports it for Charmander... For those who like to base themselves on the anime, as far as I remember, Ash's Charizard got submerged in water in the episode when he left Ash's party and it wasn't an instant KO. Personally I'd just make its tail stay lit even when underwater in SSBB. Probably as a weaker flame just for the sake of making things a bit more real.

I'd really prefer they do both. Throwing a major personality trait of a character out the window to help gameplay sucks in comparison to, say, having platforms under the water for the character to use. Traversing underwater areas has been a staple of 2D Sonic games since the beginning, after all. Perhaps they could even use his drowning music. Suited Samus has the same problem as Sonic, in my mind. I've never played a Metroid game where Samus didn't sink like a stone.

Having underwater platforms means it wouldn't be new gameplay though - it would just be regular Smash Bros with an underwater visual look (and maybe a bit of screwed up gravity, but whatever). They managed to keep the other aspects of Sonic's personality in tact, and while I can see why it would be annoying to furries Sonic fanboys, gameplay > game accuracy. Every single time.

Plus, according to reports, he dons a lifevest when he gets in the water! I think that totally qualifies as a nod to the games.

Basically, having Sonic be able to swim is like saying DK is unable to climb. It's directly contradicting a hugely important part of the character, which is the opposite of what Smash Bros is about, isn't it? While we're at it, why not make Pikachu a dinosaur and say Luigi turns into a robot if he sees at single leaf on the nose of a wolf. Madness!
What I'm seeing for an underwater stage is something more like SMB's underwater levels. You can go the higher route, but some characters will force you to travel the seabed, which will be fine 'cause there will be floor down there. Swimming seems to me to be something like crawling, wall-jumping, gliding and tether recovery - a useful feature, but not something everyone can do.

Luigi should totally do that in the next game he's in.
