Basically, having Sonic be able to swim is like saying DK is unable to climb. It's directly contradicting a hugely important part of the character, which is the opposite of what Smash Bros is about, isn't it? While we're at it, why not make Pikachu a dinosaur and say Luigi turns into a robot if he sees at single leaf on the nose of a wolf. Madness! What I'm seeing for an underwater stage is something more like SMB's underwater levels. You can go the higher route, but some characters will force you to travel the seabed, which will be fine 'cause there will be floor down there. Swimming seems to me to be something like crawling, wall-jumping, gliding and tether recovery - a useful feature, but not something everyone can do. Dude. For the third time since you brought this up. He can't swim in Smash Bros. He floats, thanks to a life vest he wears when he hits the water. The game is still series-faithful. Okay?

(SPM spoiler... Of course, Luigi DOES turn into a robot... the final boss in fact!) Anyway, I'd like to point out that a small handful of characters have been shown to have "grappling" recoveries, a small handful have been shown to crawl, and a smaller handful have been shown to swim. I would like to point out now that ONE character has been shown to climb up ladders. Does that mean ONLY Mario can climb ladders? Of course not. I can only say this in response...

This whole arguement just reminded me of how AWESOME it's going to be to play as a Charizard. I didn't even think about the flame on it's tail.
For some reason, in the 2d games, Sonic is light enough to be blown around by fans, but heavy enough to sink like lead in water. That's pretty weird. I think it's a cool detail that he wears a lifevest (if that's true). I bet Kirby is going to wear his underwater goggles. Gotta love hammerspace.... I think EVERY smash brothers character has access to it.
*Totally random post... I know. Oh well.

I mean, if Sonic wears a life vest ,and with Sakurai behind the wheel, there's nothing stopping it from happening. XD

I can see Charizard getting damaged and shooting up when touching water, like when others touch lava. Mostly because with a press on B down you'll turn into Squirtle anyway who has no doubt some advantage in water (speed probably) so Charizard getting hurt in water doesn't immediately make Pokemon Trainer a crappy fighter.

I wonder if the Topi's will make an appearance as well as the Polar Bears? Because I hope they do.

....please tell me you're joking. No, I'm not joking. It's hard to think of a Nintendo comparison, since Nintendo don't tend to limit their characters by telling us what they can't do. Since the very beginning of the series, the three most important things about Sonic are 1. He's extremely fast. 2. He hates injustice. 3. He can't swim. It's not just an observation that he can't, it's been canonically stated several hundred times, and has been the basis for about a billion plot points. With the amount of care and attention to detail given to Snake, I'd be very surprised if such a glaring omission was made to this one character. Thores, if he's wearing a life jacket then that's fine. My point was that they can't make that kind of crazy change to a character. Especially one they don't even own. And Fry, your post would make more sense if there were any characters who canonically can't climb ladders, or if we didn't already know that most characters can't crawl.

I really don't see how its any different than say, Mario throwing fireballs without a fire flower. And nobody in their right mind is having a fit about that.

It's different because Mario at least has the ability to throw fireballs. A better comparison would be Mario being able to eat enemies and turn them into eggs with his long prehensile tongue.
I'm going to simplify it, so it's easier to understand. Sonic characters are ridiculously strong. They have almost godly powers. To balance that out, they each have weaknesses. Sonic's only weakness - his only weakness - is that he can't swim. It's like... giving Superman Kyptonite eating powers. It's stupid.

And if that was needed as to not screw up the gameplay, then by all means, let him do it.

Like I said, I'd rather the level designers take the time to create decent stages that anyone can get through using their own abilities than just take the lazy way out and give everyone the same abilities.

It's stupid. Not necessarily...Sonic's other weakness is that if he simply touches an enemy, he loses his rings, and without his rings, he is completely vulnerable. Anything can kill him.

My post was intended more as a "don't make assumptions about characters based on what HASN'T been shown in updates" - and wasn't specifically about the swimming Sonic issue.
I do think some characters will be limited by what they can do in games. I doubt it'll be something like "instant death" though. During the SSE, I expect that you'll have to use flying, ladder climbing, swimming, crawling... and if you can go back and use other characters, they might be able to find alternate routes.
Charizard, Yoshi and Sonic might only be able to bob on the surface for example, rather than swim under it. Bowser might be unable to climb ladders or fit through small spaces.
