So now we know Tails, Knuckles, and (>.>) Shadow are in as Trophies. Whoop-de-shit.
It works, and it's cool to see 3rd party Assists. Sure. But damn, now we KNOW there's gonna be umpteen million Sonic ones :/

Gray Fox Assist = Tails Assist = Knuckles Assist = Big the Cat Assist = Shadow the Hedgehog playable = Gangsta Mario clone playable
...something along these lines is the correct train of thought, yes?

I'm sure the amount of Sonic assists will be reasonable. Since the franchise has such a huge catalog of faces to draw from, I imagine Sakurai will only touch on the most relevant and interesting. Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Shadow are a given...and if Eggman isn't a boss (which would be disappointing, to say the least), he'd be one too.
After that, I'd like to see Chaos and Gamma since they feel like they'd be interesting assists, but I doubt they'd show up. I'm sure there'll be a handful more for Sonic, though.
There could be hundreds of Assist Trophies; there's a lot of Nintendo history to draw from. So five or ten Sonic assists wouldn't even be a blip on the radar.

I think (hope), like 3rd party fighters, the 3rd party ATs are limited. You know, like 1 per franchise. Other Metal Gear/Sonic goofs will show up as regular trophies/stickers no doubt, but I don't expect a second AT from the guest franchises, nevermind 5 or 10 (amount of ATs probably isn't higher then 40 anyway).
Though if they're sticking in second ones, only Raiden and Dr. Robotnik are the correct answers.

I still think we know most of the ATs, but that's only because I've been hopeful and then had my dreams squashed by Nintendo many, many times in the past (seriously? you stopped at 493 Pokemon? half the levels in Galaxy aren't full levels? the islands in Wind Waker aren't even worthy sidequests? dude...)
If anything, we'll see one other Metal Gear assist and two or three Sonic assists. I'm guessing 40 total. That sounds like a good estimate, of which we know most of the trophies already (typical for Nintendo--reveal all but like... one thing, and sell it like there's thousands of things we don't know. Thanks a LOT, Mario Baseball and your promise of 50+ playable characters >.>)

And couldn't Ocelot be in without using a colt? Not every AT needs to be offensive. Not like I know anything about Ocelot *shrug* He doesn't really do anything else. His name is Revolver Ocelot, after all. Without his Single Action Army, he's nothing.

Flip and 8Bit:
So you're thinking we've already seen about a third of the total Assist Trophies we're going to get? With as much stuff this game's going to have, 40 Assist Trophies is a pretty lackluster number, especially as some of them are sprites and take up almost no disc space. I'd be surprised if there were less than one-hundred of the things; there's a lot of Nintendo history to cover and the Assist Trophies are supposed to be a part of that. There's no reason for any franchise represented in the game to have one and only one--even Ice Climbers and Kid Icarus have stuff to draw from. And it's not just named characters, either! Monsters, generic baddies--Goombas, Metroids, Octoroks, Team Rocket grunts--it's all fair game.
Think of it like this: Pokémon had 29 "Assist Trophies" in Melee with 252 different creatures. Now it has almost 500, so that 29 is likely to double in excess. Nintendo has thousands of characters and creatures. Thousands. Then add in all the Metal Gear and Sonic the Hedgehog creations on top of that. So suffice to say there ought to be a decent amount of Assist Trophies to represent that.

Have him taken over by Liquid and shove him in Metal Gear RAY. *shrug* There's room for only one Snake, and one Big Boss! My ideas for a Metal Gear AT were Gray Fox/Raiden (swordfighting acrobats), Sniper Wolf (background sniping), and Psycho Mantis ("turns" the monitor off and it says MASHIRO (spelling?) or SAKURAI at the top right). But I love Gray Fox, an amazing character with one of the best plot twists for a game. He's perfect for this, defends you from projectiles and enemies basically. If Snake says "YOU WERE KILLED IN ZANZIBAR" then I'll be absolutely overjoyed.

In a way, our update is more accurate, then. He was only ever called "Cyborg Ninja" for spoiler purposes, but why worry about spoiling a ten-year-old game?

Because it is not ten, but rather three years old? I've finished the original and TTS many times already, but I feel pity for those who hasn't, as the Gray Fox thing is one of the greatest and coolest twists in MG history. Sakurai didn't tell anything of this.

No, it's 10. Well, almost. The plot twist wasn't created for the Gamecube version. But even if it was, if people haven't finished it by now, they're never going to. Three years is about three times the amount of time that should elapse before something stops being considered a spoiler.

So suffice to say there ought to be a decent amount of Assist Trophies to represent that. Pokemon has a crapton of 'Assists' because it has it's own item: the pokeball. If Melee had 29 then my guess is that it will either be doubled like you said or quite a bit less, probably not more. Also, 100 ATs? Seriously? It's just an item man. Also if Pokeball has, say, around 50 this time, then the AT item will probably summon around 50 too, maybe more. Don't go expecting near every damn character to start helping in battle. Even if you have plenty of different ideas for ATs remember that ATs have to be different enough from each other. Yeah they could make one where Pikmin run around, one where Excite Bike drives around and one where Mach Rider does pretty much the same. Atleast the Adv. Wars one is different to Excite Bike as they just march off the stage, move slower and fire projectiles. Also (most of) the ATs have to have 3D models and animations, plus they need to be programmed correctly with testing and such. Sure they spent a lot of time on this game, but I think most of it is spent other then making hundreds of ATs (again, it's just an item). You say ATs are there to cover Nintendo history, but I think the regular collectible trophies do a fine job at that. That said if Knuckles ends up being another Sonic AT, I hope he busts out into a rap: his Pumpkin Hill rap.

This update might increase or decrease Takamaru's chance at entering SSBB as a playable character. @parrothead why are you posting these an hour after they show up on the official site, I know it's daylight savings is involved by why is this still happening? I'll be happy to volenteer to post the updates on this forum if you need a break from it. I watched The Weather Channel's clock and thought that was correct.

Assist Trophies are their own item, too. I don't see how that makes my perspective less viable. This game is going to be humongous in all aspects; why should it fall short with a lame amount of Assist Trophies? Forty is a feeble, "we tacked this on at the last minute" number.
And I'm not calling for every Nintendo creation evar to come in the form of Assist Trophies--I'm just saying there's so many things that can be used that there can still be a lot without regressing into repetition. I imagine if Mach Rider is an Assist Trophy, he'll do something different to set him apart from Excite Bike. It's not an issue of quantity over quality so much as they should make as many as they can without resorting to redundancy. Which is why I say 100 is great. It's a high number and there's plenty of characters out there that can be original.
Besides, it's not like all repetition is going to be avoided. Goroh, Lyn and Gray Fox all do the same thing with mixed secondary effects, after all.
