The DS....it's so disappointing.
After the Game Boy Advance SP was introduced in 2003, I knew that the Game Boy Advance's days were numbered.
In 2004, the DS was shown off, for the first time.
Since the Game Boy Pocket was released one year before Game Boy Color was introduced, this would be the same.
I had been wanting a GBA SP to replace my dying GBC for some time...
The DS looked truly beautiful. A,B,X,Y buttons. Stylus. Internet capabilities with LAN. A Mario 64 remake. PictoChat. A GoldenEye game. Juicy....
I could connect to the Internet from my bedroom. (I don't have my own computer)
I could show others PictoChat stuff. Use a "Sleep" command in Pokemon Yellow.
Play GoldenEye in my hand.
Relive the thrill of Mario 64.
All for $150.
REWIND, MISTER MOLECULE!
I could connect to the Internet from my bedroom. There are no Internet browsers and no modem jacks.
I could show others PictoChat stuff. Who to?
Use a "Sleep" command in Pokemon Yellow. It won't play old Game Boy (Color) games. The Sleep command is only on newer games.
Play GoldenEye in my hand. It's only a lame sequel by EA.
Relive the thrill of Mario 64. But I want only Mario, to be able to twist his face with the stylus, and the other characters only in 4-P mode. I don't want to play as Yoshi, I want to win 100 1-Ups from him.
Hook up with other Game Boys. Aye, if it only had a link cable.
All for $150. It's not a bargain any more.
*sigh*

The DS is, so far, my favourite portable sysstem. (The original GBA is my least favourite among all Nintendo systems)
I remember back when everyone kept busy stocking GBA and games, I just said: "I'll just want for another portable systems - if it has backward compatibility and can play GBA games, then a GBC plus a next-gen system would be enough. Why bother with GBA?"
Years passed, and what I said had come true.
Internet compatibility: Surely there are no access points over here, so I don't think I could link to the Internet. Anyways, I have total control over my very own PC!
Show PictoChat stuff: Use a camera. It's lame, but it's possible.
Sleep command: So far I don't use it very often. I don't keep myself busy while playing games.
Old games: I have my own GBC.
Play GoldenEye / Mario 64: I'm not interested. Remember what's my choice between the "classic" Mario 64 and a brand new WarioWare: Touched?
Link up with other GBs: I don't even know how to play Game Boy single-pak multyplayer games!
All for $150: Oh, I've paid... I remember it's at least $200 for that (the Metroid Prime Hunters demo version is quite rare over here. If I don't get it soon enough, I don't think I can have it.) But I think it's worth it. And oh, I remember I paid at least $200 for GC too... But did I complain?
For me, it's totally worth it.

3 simple words (well 2 and an acronym):
Mario Kart DS
... online. 8 player capabilities. New courses + classic courses. Pretty much worth the price of the DS, the game, and the Wifi connection itself.
But if your not convinced, what about New Super Mario Bros.? Mario & Luigi 2? Animal Crossing DS?
There - another 3 reasons why I feel the DS is more than worth the price tag. Throw in a cool remake of SM64 (though I'll admit I definately preferred the Mario face stretching than the picture stretching), a pretty addictive WarioWare (less addictive than the others, IMO, but still...), a supposedly quite addictive Kirby Game, a Dog Simulator (if you like that sort of thing), etc, etc, and I beleive its worth the price. Easily.

Sounds like you got yourself all hyped up on rumours and early speculation. Always going to lead to a crash if you're not wary.
But still...
The GBA SP still gets more use out of me. The main problem is that all DS games so far are merely dipping their toes in the water - not being too risky with the new hardware. As a result, I have six games, all of them completed... and not within a whole lotta time. This basically means my GBASP is still getting more attention than my DS - it's still much more comfortable to play GBA games on an SP than a DS, in my opinion.
But there's plenty of games on the horizon that have me very excited about being a DS owner.

Well, As I've said, I never have a GBA or SP - so it takes me a while to get used to the big game library. The problem is, I borrowed most of them, not own them. The reason behind is that GBA isn't too comparible to other Nintendo systems. Anyways, it's the Gamecube that gets most of my attention for now. I still haven't finished Polarium yet (I don't think FG64 did!), so... I on;y have 75% of my games completed. (Compared to that of GC, that is also a 75%... 6 out of 8 games completed) There should be even more hidden fun for the DS!!! Wow, another meaning for "DS"!

Dog simulator! that's a good one. But I prefer Double screen over Dual screen any day.

Don't forget "Developer's System" from some quote I can't remember. NoA said that. I can't find the page for you now, but it should be in the DS help page.

I still don't have one... but I want one...
A DS that is. I am still waiting for the PSP to launch in AU, so that Nintendo releases a new colour for the DS over here, and then I'll consider a purchase. I hope that we get a new colour soon...

Mmm, yeah, the electric blue (which is what we will most likely get) is nice. Not as nice as the Japanese Turquoise one (or any of the other japanese ones - but I like turquoise the best), but its pretty cool either way.

The best way to get an alternative colour for the DS is to paint it

I'm enjoying my DS, which I bought partially to replace my GBA (non Sp). The screen is good, the extra buttons are good, and it does have a few good games. Plus, wireless multiplayer Meteos is wonderful. I can't wait for the really good stuff to hit (Mario Bros., Mario Kart, Nintendogs, Advance Wars, Castlevania, Sonic Rush, and Phoenix Wright)

Actually, I haven't bought a DS yet. I haven't shelled out $150 for my DS yet.
