As has been said before, its the first area in the first 3D Metroid, also the first area in a Metroid game after the series absence. So at the least its got historic importance. I might be thinking to much about this tho...

Remember when you shat bricks back in Melee when you saw the Great Bay stage instead Clock Town or ZOMG HYRULE FIELD? This is the same thing.
Sakurai has a weird taste for stages.

I don't care much about the locales, as long as the stages are creative and fun. I guess Hyrule Field could work too, but the Bay had a whole turtle popping up now and then plus a wobbly stone in the left corner, something any other stage didn't have.
And I guess they picked this place because it's in a space colony and they have the excuse to turn it into a stage that flips around. Can't think of a lot of other areas in Nintendo games where the same hazard would've worked. Maybe some Mario Galaxy place.

I figure gimmicks play a huge role in what stages get picked. There are stages that HAVE to be in there, like an Onett or Pokemon Stadium, but for the most part the selection between a Great Bay and Hyrule Field falls back to gimmicks.
Speaking of which, anyone else get the feeling Great Bay is another Melee returning stage? With swimming mechanics being added, it would be a completely fresh stage.
