From Drummond's Myspace page:
Hey everyone, Just a quick holla at all the powerful Sonic fans around the globe! Wanted to let you know a few things since I've got about 2500 emails just this week about this. Let me clear up some questions en masse...
1) No, I'm not doing any voice work for Brawl.
2) No, no one has contacted me or my agent about doing any voicework for Brawl.
3) If you DO hear my voice in there somewhere, they are recycling voice files from past games. No, it's not illegal and no they do not need my permission to do that.
4) There is no news to tell, unfortunately. Any attempts by "my people" to contact "their people" resulted in nothing.

For those who aren't in the know, Ryan Drummond was the voice of Sonic for Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and a few of the Sonic handheld games, before being replaced by Jason Griffith.
So, this either means that Sakurai is using old clips of Ryan Drummond speaking for Sonic, or Jason Griffith may actually have taken steps towards not sucking ass.

This pisses me off a little.
If they don't recycle, than Jason better be on his A-Game.

Jason's been improving lately. And this is coming from someone who seriously hates his voice work. Anybody see the Riders: Zero Gravity opening sequence? The only character voice I had a problem with in that movie was Tails, who is still ear-bleedingly awful. Sonic wasn't too bad, and I actually quite like Dan Green as Knuckles.

Who did the 'Sonic's my name speeds my game' line? That didn't sound too bad.

Whatever. I was surprised people cared this much about the voice. I mean, I get upset when Luigi has a high-pitched voice but that's only because his VA doesn't get changed every year like Sonic's.
Well, good news or bad news for the Sonic fans? I have no idea >.<

Sonic's voice was never changed every year... it was changed once in the last 9 years, fairly recently. XD
Ryan Drummond got the part in 1998 for Sonic Adventure, and though he wasn't great initially, he improved steadily, and had a voice that suited the character well. Then, in 2005, he was replaced by the 4Kids actor the fanbase almost universally hated.

Who did the 'Sonic's my name speeds my game' line? That didn't sound too bad. I'm wondering that myself. While it was only a single line (and it wasn't very long, at that), it wasn't bad. Since it's not Ryan Drummond directly, either they reused an old soundbyte (and I don't remember that line ever cropping up in one of the games he's done), or it was the 4Kids voice actor and he delivered that single line without wholly sucking. Unfortunately, Jason Griffiths is a terrible voice actor and an even worse Sonic, so I'm hoping that, if he is doing the voicework, he's improved substantially.

I'll admit that I'm kind of spoiled with the voice acting in this game. Before, in Melee, only Jigglypuff, Fox and Falco had entirely different voice actors between regions; even then, Fox and Falco only had different English voice actors for the Arwing cutscenes.
Brawl seems to be taking it five steps further; Snake, Sonic and Ike have their English voice actors for in-battle sequences, just like Jigglypuff did for the first two Smash games, and from the sound of it, Wario has his English voice too. I'd like it if the same thing happened to Luigi.
Basically, since Brawl's voice acting is more regionally secluded than Melee's--since English voice acting seems to be a focus point of much importance--I'd have preferred Drummond over Griffith because Drummond is okay and Griffith sucks nards.

As long as Sonic says cheesy one-liners when losing a life or something they can use whoever they want.

I couldn't care less about who's voice-acting Sonic. Just be happy Sonic is in.

Are you saying Wario, Mario, and Luigi have different voice actors in Japan? Who could compete with Charles Martinet?! He is Mario! (and Wario, and Luigi, and Waluigi, and Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi...)

I've been saying that for ages now whenever the topic comes up XD Luigi, Wario, Peach and Toad--traditionally any characters with speaking lines, so I suppose this includes Bowser in Super Mario Sunshine and any spinoffs to follow shortly thereafter--all have different voice actors in Japan because people expect them to talk differently. Wario's voice is a lot deeper, Peach uses very choked Engrish, and Luigi's is much higher. Only Mario has the same voice inter-regionally, although I recently remember Martinet manning the WarioLuigiWaluigi Helm even in Japanland. I think.
When I get home, I'll rip the voice bites from my MarioKart64 soundtrack and post them up here.

IMO The new Sonic voice actors are getting better. Some are even SURPASSING the old ones. (Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge, Amy....) And I am one of the few people who likes Jason better. Heck, I like almost ALL of the new guys better. (except for the Chaotix, Espio is alright, Charmy is even more dumb and girly, and Vectors voice just screams " Kill Me!) Crap, I went off topic again.

I remember reading that they had different voice actors for characters up until a set point, then Charles did the voice for the Mario esque characters. Also, Yoshi has the same voice actor worldwide as well.

Anybody who thinks that Shadow and Rouge's 4Kids voices have surpassed the original ones has gone batshit insane. Shadow and Rouge have some of the worst voices of the entire current cast. Oh, and Jet.
