My RA freshman year who wasn't gay himself but was raised by two gay women HATED the word f*g. He said it reminded him of burning, which I guess makes sense in some weird way. A f*ggot, historically, is a bundle of sticks for a fire. But, personally, it's part of the colloquial for 15-30 year old guys I know definitely here but likely a lot of other places in the world. It's not nice to use when referring to people and it's the ultimate in derogatory terms for a gay man, but, just like people using "that's gay" or "n*gga please" it's just part of the culture now. Who knows: if people keep using it this way, the original meaning will get lost and, eventually, it becomes something completely different. I mean, "geek" was a term for circus freaks. And roses used to "stink." "Swell" was a curse word in the earlier half of the 20th century, and we always find new ways to say something's interesting ("sick," "cool," "boss," etc.). It's part of the evolution of the language, as far as I'm concerned. Just uh... don't paint me as a homophobe. Please. Two of my best friend's are bi and I grew up with a gay neighbor. I'm not hating. You forgot how Gay used to mean happy, then homosexuals used the term for themselves, stating they were happy how they were, and it evolved from there... Food for thought.

Not at all. Just like in a handful of years, Gay has become a synonym for something bad without referring to anything actually gay, while also maintaining its original meaning
eg. "Dude, that shirt is gay" no longer refers specifically to stereotypically homosexual shirts (pink, shows the bellybutton, etc), but could also refer to, for example, a Yu-Gi-Oh shirt! ;D
It's like n*gger is a horrible, horrible word, and for me, the American use of f*g is just as derogatory. Neither have lost their original meaning of insulting people of a particular race or social group, and both are very aggressive words. They are blocked specifically because they are overused, and I haven't stopped every potentially offensive word, as they are generally accepted as no-no's... even on this ker-azy thing we call teh internets.
Won't somebody think of the children!!
