That was what I thought he was saying, until I got to this part. Hmm...if I had to guess, I'd assume that means that, let's say Samus is her actual size in Smash Bros. If she were placed next to Ridley, we would see how big he actually is compared to everyone else, and if he were too big, he'd be made a boss (like Petey Piranha).

Takumaru and Olimar are the key interests to me here. I'm gonna say pros and cons for the two.
Takumaru Pro's He's a Japanese sword fighter, we don't have a ninja or samurai in playable, and it seems they're making way for him or making him an AT. -Excellent array of projectiles, perhaps make them all part of a charge move of throwing things. -Great theme music that ensures it will hopefully be in, since the tunnel stage music from X is in. -Can be reimagined like Pit, and give him a spike in style.
Cons -While Kid Icarus, the sister game to Metroid, got a sequel and internationality, Murasame Castle got one sister game to Legend of Zelda and was stuck in Japan. My guess is that it kinda looks like the enemies explode in little blood waves. -Many don't know who he is. Mother 3 is at least current. You have to explore for sites like this or make a mistake on Youtube to generally learn of this game and not be too much of an obscure fanatic. -If he gets in over Olimar Pikmin fans won't be please.
Olimar Pro's -Except the Wii series, the latest series done by Miyamoto, and let's face it, one of the most creative concepts in a long time for Nintendo. -This is the representative for Gamecube, really. Yoshi and Diddy are great ways to just yell "They ARE the SNES", well Olimar IS Gamecube. He's the original franchise for the system, and unlike a few new series like Geist, got a sequel (and deserved one). -Pikmin can be a great concept to playing. Bomb rocks, throwing up to like ten Pikmin to leech onto a foe and slowly do damage... even Olimar's Nova Blaster treasure in the original... make that a handgun blaster.
Cons -If we have arguements about Ridley being too big to change then Olimar's too small to change. Literally both are polar opposites. Ridley's a good 8 feet tall or so while Olimar is one inch tall. Easily can be sized up, but SO CAN RIDLEY. The minute one is considered too small or big, the other is on the same end of the deal. -Sakurai doesn't seem to like him... but I honestly think this isn't about his like for Olimar, if it's a key new series. -The usage of Pikmin might be an odd concept.

The whole "too small" and "too big" has to end here.
The reason? SMASH BROS IS NON CANON!!!!!!
Seriously, the characters are trophies, all the characters are at least 1-2 ft in height if you think about it.

all the characters are at least 1-2 ft in height if you think about it. So is mostly everyone in the real world over the age of two.

They're probably all, like... a couple of inches tall. Judging by the kid's hand that throws the Mario trophy in Melee's intro, anyway.

Size is a non-issue: Melee even addresses this fact. "Kirby is actually 8 inches tall, LAWL!" Right on his damn trophy description. Takamaru deserves to get in because he's from that golden era of the Famicom Disk System, damnit. Just like Pit, Link, and Samus. He is NOT retro. He's just forgotten. Olimar deserves a spot simply because it's such a novel idea to fight with Pikmin and Sakurai bothered to put a "secret trophy" in Melee just for playing Pikmin on the same memory card. Pikmin also cameo in games here and there, while Miyamoto pimped the games like nobody's business. Olimar's a shoe-in. And finally, we can't deny that Ridley WOULD play an awful lot like Charizard. Charizard is biologically a winged lizard, but he's pretty damn draconic. I mean, the thing learns Dragon Rage and can breed with the actual Dragon-types in the game (as can Sceptile, Feraligatr, and Seviper--but that's beyond the point). Ridley would be just the same, hulking with his massive bat-like wings and thrashing tail. Don't tell me they wouldn't play very similarly, because that's ignoring the straight up facts that, well, they're the same build. I wouldn't be surprised if Ridley appeared as a Charizard clone at all. It just makes sense. And besides, in Melee we got a lot of similarly behaving characters. Sakurai doesn't really care if he makes fighters too similar. Zelda, Mewtwo, AND Ness all had very similar A attacks and grabs. Mario and Luigi are similar (for obvious reasons), Samus and Captain Falcon share a few moves, and Kirby and Jigglypuff aren't too far apart either. And we can't deny that in Brawl Diddy is going to move a lot like other characters, Meta Knight will be sharing a few moves with Link and Kirby (which he actually does), and we'll get flashbacks to previous characters like Young Link in Pit or Roy in Ike. It's just unavoidable. There's only so many ways a guy can punch and kick, y'know? So yeah... Charizard and Ridley being too similar is not a deterrent. That being said, I still don't like playable Ridley >

Neither does story. Or influence.

Ah, so that's the only rule? Be able to fight or get out? Yes. I mean, it's Super Smash Bros. Fighting games deserve characters with fighting abilities.

Before I say anything else, I want to say Good Job. It is all sound and make sense and can be backed up.
But I do want to point something out.
So finally, we come to Meowth but Sakurai didn't have the time to make a moveset for Meowth, so we got Pichu, another quick and easy clone to bump the roster numbers.
You must remember that characters just don't get in. Even though Meowth was next in line, he still had an 8. Sakurai doesn't add characters to the franchise for the heck of it. If Meowth has a 69 like some other characters, then he stood a chance. It's with this way with many characters. It's not that he ran out of time. The clones only threw out a character or two.
@tv Eye:Importance still matter. Why would you add a character that isn't important, or doesn't have popularity.

Yes, the clones threw out at least three characters: Wario (Dr. Mario), Oguma (Roy), and Meowth (Pichu). The rest at least were on the Melee poll. That's what I believe what happened. Just like Lucas threw Ness out of Brawl. I'm fine with not playing as Meowth now. I understand that Sakurai had to sacrifice both Meowth and Gardevoir to make way for Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard. Not a bad trade-off, I suppose. At least Meowth is back in Smash.

Just like Lucas threw Ness out of Brawl. Those probably aren't the three characters. Mewoth only made an 8 and was still lower then Pichu, and Oguma wasn't that high to beging with. The two characters, from what I've heard who were kicked were Sigurd and Pit.
