Bowser and Peach were top picks for Melee. Wario came close but Peach beat him by one point so Peach got in and Wario didn't. Wario would have been in Melee if Sakurai had the time to do so but he chose Dr. Mario as a quick and easy way to increase the roster numbers (and partially because he liked Dr. Mario's music).
So naturally Wario is the next in line for Brawl and got in (one of Sakurai's first choices). But who will come after Wario? Could it be Toad, who's the next in line from the Melee poll, or Geno, who's now the top pick for Brawl compared to Melee? Seeing that Toad is once again part of Peach's moveset, could Geno get in by default? Or will Sakurai surprise us again with Dr. Mario (I doubt it because Sakurai is trying to avoid putting in clones this time) or someone else?
At the very least, expect to see Mario, Luigi (he WILL be in), Bowser, and Peach. If we are getting a fifth Mario character, it could either be Toad, Geno, Dr. Mario, or someone else.

But who could be the fourth Pokemon character? Well, we check the Brawl poll and see that both Gardevoir and Steven Stone are top picks and they are the only ones on the poll.
So... since Gardevoir and Steven Stone are tied for the top pick... what to do? what to do? Well, since Steven Stone is a Pokemon Trainer, and Red was on the Melee poll. Hmmm.. how would a Pokemon Trainer work in a Smash game? Pokemon Trainers always stay outside the ring and send their Pokemon to do the fighting... so Sakurai picked Red over Steven Stone as Red is the original Pokemon Trainer.. and it makes sense for the original Pokemon Trainer to have the three original starters. So we drop Meowth (he probably figured that Meowth is no longer wanted since he isn't in the Brawl poll so he went with Red) and Gardevoir in favor of Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard.
And with that, I really doubt we will get any more playable Pokemon beyond Red's three Pokemon. So that's six playble Pokemon in Brawl.

The whole Zelda category in Melee are all in Melee, we move on to the Brawl poll... where Wind Waker Link is the top pick! But he's another version of Young Link. But the Young Link from Melee is based on OOT/MM and Wind Waker Link is based on TWW/TMC/FSA/PH, the latest Zelda games featuring Young Link. And since Link had a makeover going from OOT to TP, the latest Zelda game featuring an adult Link, it makes sense to have Young Link get a makeover going from OOT/MM to TWW/TMC/FSA/PH. So I would expect a cel-shaded Young Link to be playable.
As for the other Zelda characters, I can only see Ganon playable through Ganondorf's Final Smash (kinda like Bowser's Final Smash). Personally I am hoping it's the ALTTP version of Ganon, not the TP version. The other characters are likely going to end up as ATs.
Sheik? Chances are, he/she is still in as he/she is equally wanted as Zelda and Young Link. Sheik could even come back in TP's style!
So expect at least three Zelda characters: Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. If we are lucky, we might get Sheik as Zelda's down special again, a cel-shaded Young Link, and Ganon as Ganondorf's FS.

We know the story... Sakurai didn't put any Kirby characters in Melee because he is humble about his creations and didn't want to appear biased (I'm looking at you, Dr. Mario).
But now that Brawl could be the last Smash game (Melee was going to be the last) he's putting in his creations, finally! Meta Knight was his first choice (even though King Dedede was the top pick for Melee) because that's his favorite creation.
But what about King Dedede? Is he still the most-wanted? The Brawl poll says King Dedede is still the top pick, so naturally Sakurai happily put him in.
And the other Kirby characters? They are so going to end up as ATs. That's the most-likely scenario. And if Sakurai really likes Lolo and Lala a lot, he might even throw them in as playable characters. But in the end, at the very least, expect just Kirby, Meta Knight, and King Dedede.

Sakurai wanted Lucas to replace Ness in Melee, but Mother 3 got cancelled so Ness stayed. But after Mother 3 was released last year, there's no reason not to put Lucas in Brawl. And according to the Brawl poll, Jeff, Claus, and Lucas were tied for the top picks. But since Sakurai wanted to replace Ness with Lucas, it made no sense to have Jeff playable without Ness, so Jeff is out. And Claus is one of the villians of Mother 3, the very least that can happen is Claus appearing as one of Lucas's alternate colors (NOT costumes). And I think we can expect Lucas to be the only Mother representative in Brawl.

So at the very least, expect Marth and Ike to be playable.

But what about King K. Rool? He seems better suited as a boss than a playable character, but it could go either way. Expect at least two playable Donkey Kong characters: Donkey and Diddy.

Sukapon was the top pick for Melee but got the shaft because Sakurai discriminated against him for some reason and stated that he will not be playable in Brawl. So that automatically disqualifies Sukapon from the Brawl poll as well.
Lip was next in line for Melee but didn't get in, probably because Sakurai couldn't think of moves to give her so we got her stick as an item in Melee and again in Brawl. That probably disqualifies Lip from the Brawl poll as well.
Prince Richard? Too obscure. Metroid? AT in Brawl. Foreman Spike? One of Mario's alternate colors. And finally we come to Pit. For some reason Pit didn't make the cut in Melee (probably because Pit is more obscure than the Ice Climbers in Sakurai's mind) but he was the top pick for Brawl after those who were above him are out so he got in.
Donbe? The Marvellous boys? Too obscure. Samurai Goroh? Well, he was the only F-Zero character in the Melee poll so that makes him the top pick for Melee.. but F-Zero doesn't really need two representatives and so he's out. And he wasn't on the Brawl poll so Sakurai turned him into an AT. Black Shadow is currently the top pick for the F-Zero roster in Brawl, but he is likely going to end up as a boss as F-Zero still doesn't really need two representatives. So I think we will only have Captain Falcon as the F-Zero representative.
Ice Climbers and Balloon Fighter were tied and they both interest Sakurai. But only one will make the cut. Sakurai figured that Balloon Fighter would be useless when his balloons are gone so Ice Climbers got in.
Captain Olimar and Takamaru are the top picks in Brawl. Will one or both of them make the cut? Well, Captain Olimar has the advantage of being international while Takamaru has the disadvantage of being Japan-only and Sakurai is trying not to put in many Japan-only newcomers. But Takamaru has the advantage of being combat-ready with his sword and samurai-type moves while Captain Olimar has the disadvantage of not exactly combat-ready and only uses Pikmin to fight for him. But Captain Olimar has the advantage of being unique in that he could team up with his Pikmin to fight while Takamaru has the disadvantage of being yet another sword fighter. But Takamaru has the advantage of having Sakurai's interest while Captain Olimar has the disadvantage of not having Sakurai's interest. Oh, so many pros and cons for these two.... but could we have our cake and eat it when Sakurai decides to put both in as newcomers? Only time will tell.
As for the Cheer Squad and Professor Kawashima, they are better suited as an AT and a boss, respectively. And for the rest? They are likely going to end up as ATs like Jill (Drill Dozer), Dr. Wright, and even the Advance Wars Infantry (they are GBA sprites). The only exception of this MIGHT be Muddy Mole as it was rumored that Sakurai found him very interesting he could already be in the roster (I'd like to see proof of this).
Out of everyone on this poll, we might get at least two: Ice Climbers and Pit. But we might get Takamaru, Captain Olimar, and maybe even Muddy Mole if we are lucky.

Snake was never suggested in neither polls and got in Brawl anyway... mainly due to his creator "practically begging" Sakurai to put him in. Not surprisingly, Sonic was the least-wanted third-party character in Melee (it was a Japan-only poll, isn't it?) but he was the most-wanted third-party character for Brawl in the rest of the world... so naturally Sonic got in. But Mega Man? He was also the least-wanted third-party character for Melee but the most-wanted for Brawl... could he get in just like Sonic?
Maybe Chocobo might even make the cut as it was the most-wanted third-party character for Melee and would make a fine Square Enix representative. But chances are, that might not happen. We might not get one at all. So maybe we will only have Snake and Sonic in Brawl. Only time will tell...
METROID - BRAWL POLL

Ridley is the top pick for Brawl but with that Ridley Boss music in the game, it might hint that Ridley might end up as a boss and not a playable newcomer. And Ridley is too big to be playable so he might be a boss just like Petey Piranha (another "too big" character)... and I think Charizard already shown that Ridley might not be playable. Charizard and Ridley are so much alike in that they breathe fire, have dragon-like wings, long necks, long tails, claws, and can fly. Maybe we will end up pretending to play as Ridley by playing with the shiny black-and-red Charizard.

Mr. Saturn was the top pick for Melee.... but he just isn't built for fighting. So he got in as an item, at the very least. So the next in line was Poo. But Mother isn't a big franchise to need two representatives so he was out.
Sakurai wanted Lucas to replace Ness in Melee, but Mother 3 got cancelled so Ness stayed. But after Mother 3 was released last year, there's no reason not to put Lucas in Brawl. And according to the Brawl poll, Jeff, Claus, and Lucas were tied for the top picks. But since Sakurai wanted to replace Ness with Lucas, it made no sense to have Jeff playable without Ness, so Jeff is out. And Claus is one of the villians of Mother 3, the very least that can happen is Claus appearing as one of Lucas's alternate colors (NOT costumes). And I think we can expect Lucas to be the only Mother representative in Brawl.

So Marth was the top pick for Melee so he got in. Oguma was the runner-up but got the shaft in favor of Roy, who only got in Melee just to advertise his upcoming Fire Emblem game. And for Brawl, Ike is the top pick so he got in, of course. And once again, Oguma is the runner-up.... but he could get the shaft once again in favor of Marth since it is very likely Roy will be removed. So at the very least, expect Marth and Ike to be playable.

Okay, none of these Rare characters will be in Brawl. So by default, Diddy Kong is the top pick... and he's even the only Donkey Kong character to appear in the Melee poll, that automatically makes him the top pick for the Donkey Kong franchise.
But could he still be the top pick for Brawl? The poll showed that Diddy Kong is still the top pick and so he got in. That automatically disqualifies Diddy Kong & Dixie Kong as a team. But what about King K. Rool? He seems better suited as a boss than a playable character, but it could go either way. Expect at least two playable Donkey Kong characters: Donkey and Diddy.

Sukapon was the top pick for Melee but got the shaft because Sakurai discriminated against him for some reason and stated that he will not be playable in Brawl. So that automatically disqualifies Sukapon from the Brawl poll as well.
Lip was next in line for Melee but didn't get in, probably because Sakurai couldn't think of moves to give her so we got her stick as an item in Melee and again in Brawl. That probably disqualifies Lip from the Brawl poll as well.
Prince Richard? Too obscure. Metroid? AT in Brawl. Foreman Spike? One of Mario's alternate colors. And finally we come to Pit. For some reason Pit didn't make the cut in Melee (probably because Pit is more obscure than the Ice Climbers in Sakurai's mind) but he was the top pick for Brawl after those who were above him are out so he got in.
Donbe? The Marvellous boys? Too obscure. Samurai Goroh? Well, he was the only F-Zero character in the Melee poll so that makes him the top pick for Melee.. but F-Zero doesn't really need two representatives and so he's out. And he wasn't on the Brawl poll so Sakurai turned him into an AT. Black Shadow is currently the top pick for the F-Zero roster in Brawl, but he is likely going to end up as a boss as F-Zero still doesn't really need two representatives. So I think we will only have Captain Falcon as the F-Zero representative.
Ice Climbers and Balloon Fighter were tied and they both interest Sakurai. But only one will make the cut. Sakurai figured that Balloon Fighter would be useless when his balloons are gone so Ice Climbers got in.
Captain Olimar and Takamaru are the top picks in Brawl. Will one or both of them make the cut? Well, Captain Olimar has the advantage of being international while Takamaru has the disadvantage of being Japan-only and Sakurai is trying not to put in many Japan-only newcomers. But Takamaru has the advantage of being combat-ready with his sword and samurai-type moves while Captain Olimar has the disadvantage of not exactly combat-ready and only uses Pikmin to fight for him. But Captain Olimar has the advantage of being unique in that he could team up with his Pikmin to fight while Takamaru has the disadvantage of being yet another sword fighter. But Takamaru has the advantage of having Sakurai's interest while Captain Olimar has the disadvantage of not having Sakurai's interest. Oh, so many pros and cons for these two.... but could we have our cake and eat it when Sakurai decides to put both in as newcomers? Only time will tell.
As for the Cheer Squad and Professor Kawashima, they are better suited as an AT and a boss, respectively. And for the rest? They are likely going to end up as ATs like Jill (Drill Dozer), Dr. Wright, and even the Advance Wars Infantry (they are GBA sprites). The only exception of this MIGHT be Muddy Mole as it was rumored that Sakurai found him very interesting he could already be in the roster (I'd like to see proof of this).
Out of everyone on this poll, we might get at least two: Ice Climbers and Pit. But we might get Takamaru, Captain Olimar, and maybe even Muddy Mole if we are lucky.

Snake was never suggested in neither polls and got in Brawl anyway... mainly due to his creator "practically begging" Sakurai to put him in. Not surprisingly, Sonic was the least-wanted third-party character in Melee (it was a Japan-only poll, isn't it?) but he was the most-wanted third-party character for Brawl in the rest of the world... so naturally Sonic got in. But Mega Man? He was also the least-wanted third-party character for Melee but the most-wanted for Brawl... could he get in just like Sonic?
Maybe Chocobo might even make the cut as it was the most-wanted third-party character for Melee and would make a fine Square Enix representative. But chances are, that might not happen. We might not get one at all. So maybe we will only have Snake and Sonic in Brawl. Only time will tell...
METROID - BRAWL POLL

Ridley is the top pick for Brawl but with that Ridley Boss music in the game, it might hint that Ridley might end up as a boss and not a playable newcomer. And Ridley is too big to be playable so he might be a boss just like Petey Piranha (another "too big" character)... and I think Charizard already shown that Ridley might not be playable. Charizard and Ridley are so much alike in that they breathe fire, have dragon-like wings, long necks, long tails, claws, and can fly. Maybe we will end up pretending to play as Ridley by playing with the shiny black-and-red Charizard.

Maybe the human will wear the work uniform he got from Tom Nook and personally, I am hoping he has the viking hat!

At the very least expect Lip or her daughter to end up as AT - clearing the puzzle blocks with combos and chains to drop garbage blocks.
