Pichu didn't even make in the Melee poll.. So how is 0 higher than 8? And Oguma was pretty high considering he ranked #3 in the FE category (#2 went to miscellaneous FE characters).

Pichu got into Melee like all clones did. They were a modification of a preexisting character.

Oguma was commented on by Sakurai in the Melee Toukoken as being a "why do you guys love him so friggin' much?!" character. Sakurai preferred other FE characters to Oguma immensely, hence Oguma was passed over.
Also, it was Peach, Bowser, and Mewtwo that were planned for 64. Dedede and Wario are the only ones we know were planned for Melee. Pit was NEVER planned by Sakurai, because he was convinced he was a "nobody gives a shit" character. That was, until he realized Smash was very popular in the West along with Kid Icarus... People forget how Japan-centric Japanese can be. It was only with Brawl that Nintendo, and Sakurai, realized that non-Japanese were big Smash lovers too. Sakurai even admitted it in an interview alongside Miyamoto (who is a rare "world-centric" game designer in Japan).

Judging from the number of likely newcomers from both polls and what we know about the current Brawl roster, I think we could end up with at least 36 characters.
Maybe there will be 20 starting characters (third-party characters could be unlockables like Sakurai said after the Brawl poll closed). So the following unlockables could be:
21. Snake 22. Sonic 23. Luigi 24. Captain Falcon 25. Jigglypuff 26. Marth 27. Mewtwo 28. Mr. Game & Watch 29. Ganondorf 30. Geno 31. Wind Waker Link 32. Krystal 33. Captain Olimar 34. Takamaru 35. Animal Crossing Human 36. Mii (to go with the PictoChat stage, it plays Wii music, right?)
If we are lucky, we could get 40. They would likely be surprise characters or at least the least-voted characters like Muddy Mole and Lolo & Lala. But I think 36 is our safe bet. All JMO, though.
I'd be shocked if my educated guess turned out to be correct!

All these comments about Ridley being the same as Charizard... I'm not sure that would be the case.
There'd be some similarities, sure, but they don't have to be the same. Diddy and Donkey are both primates and they seem pretty different in move style.
More importantly, consider Ridley's fighting method. Aside from his fire breath, his signature attack is his tail. It's very much a scorpion-esque maneuver and unlike anything Charizard (or anyone else) has. Unlike Charizard whose attacks seem very reserved, Ridley is a much more savage opponent. Expect him to be thrashing with his teeth, claws, and especially tail. You can sort of imagine a scaled down Ridley jumping on somebody's back, during a grab, and kind of chomping down on their head.
Their fighting stance is also different as well. While Charizard marches on his hind legs with his pot belly out for all, Ridley in the Prime series is shown to often fight on all fours. He's significantly more agile than Charizard as well. Alternatively, in the 2D series, Ridley is rarely ever shown on the ground. He usually just attacks while constantly in the air. There's no reason he couldn't be a constantly floating character, ala Mewtwo.
In any case, at least we can rest assured that the presence of Bowser means we won't get any Turtle Pokemon, am I right?

In any case, at least we can rest assured that the presence of Bowser means we won't get any Turtle Pokemon, am I right? Now you're just being mean. Making me sound like a 12-year old Ridley would be a lot fiercer than Charizard, but he could still be a clone. Ganondorf looks a helluva lot different using Falcon's moves than Falcon does. Falcon is all about speed and being extreme; Ganon was pure power. Rock Smash could become a chomping or headbutting attack for all we know. I'm just saying that anything is possible, and I wouldn't surprised if we get Ridley and people complain about his similarities to Charizard. Geno wasn't deconfirmed, because there are still a lot of unanswered questions and the guy who posted that original topic turned out to be a phony. So we're back at square one as far as that's concerned. And finally: 36 sounds good, but honestly I don't expect that many original franchises to pop up. The more I've thought about it, the more likely it is for Nintendo to nudge Sakurai into (and for him to come to the same conclusion that...) including more known characters from repped franchises. I can see us getting to 36, but with only two or three new franchises. The rest will be completely pulled from already represented series. I'm calling it now, but from the getgo I wasn't expecting a stellar roster of Nintendo "nostalgia." Nobody should have.

Brawl already got 6 new franchises with Kid Icarus, Wario, Metal Gear, Sonic, Animal Crossing, and Touch Generations. So that could mean we will get Animal Crossing Human and Mii as playables in addition to Pit, Wario, Snake, and Sonic.
But there's one more franchise that goes in between Sonic and Touch Generations, right? That could go to either Pikmin or Nazo no Murasame Jou. Unless we get one more franchise past Touch Generations, we will have either Captain Olimar or Takamaru.
And with that, lets count the representatives all the franchises in Brawl will have.
Mario gets 5: Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, and a fifth character. It might not be Geno as he is not very well-known so we might get Toad or Bowser Jr.
Donkey Kong gets 2: Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.
Zelda gets 4: Link, Zelda, Ganondorf, and Wind Waker Link.
Metroid gets 1: Samus and Zero Suit Samus in one slot.
Yoshi gets 1: Yoshi.
Kirby gets 3: Kirby, Meta Knight, and King Dedede.
Star Fox gets 2: Fox and either Falco and Krystal. I'm going with Krystal.
Pokemon gets 4: Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, and Pokemon Trainer.
F-Zero gets 1: Captain Falcon.
Mother gets 1: Lucas.
That's 24 character slots for the original 10 franchises.
Ice Climber gets 1: Ice Climbers
Fire Emblem gets 2: Marth and Ike.
Game & Watch gets 1: Mr. Game & Watch.
That's 4 character slots for the Melee's 3 franchises. And in total, 28 character slots for the 13 pre-Brawl franchises.
So that would mean 8 character slots remaining for the Brawl franchises. And we know we have 6 new franchises so far. And 6 out of the 8 remaining character slots would go to Pit, Wario, Snake, Sonic, Animal Crossing Human, and Mii. That's 34 character slots filled up right there.
So the last two character slots would go to Captain Olimar and Takamaru. But since we don't know if there will be a new franchise past Touch Generations, we could have only 35 character slots. And then it will be either Captain Olimar or Takamaru. I think Takamaru will get in over Captain Olimar because he has Sakurai's interest.
I know for sure my predicted roster has a lot of well-known characters and a few less-known characters. At least 8 out of 36 are less-known characters and they are Geno, Lucas, Ice Climbers, Marth, Mr. Game & Watch, Pit, Captain Olimar, and Takamaru.

It's not Touch Generations. It's just the symbol on top of DS Lites. See? This is Touch! Generations.

And the DS has nothing to do with Miis, incidentally.

PictoChat has nothing to do with the Wii yet it plays Wii Shop music and other Wii Menu music.

Yeah, Touch! Generations is the closest "series" you can associate with it (the American logo has a stylus on it, even though the concept also includes Wii games). But I'll call it just DS for now outside of assumptions. It's used for a Nintendo DS application stage.

I'd also like to add that Balloon Fight has nothing to do with Ice Climber yet the fish from Balloon Fight is part of the Ice Climber stage in Brawl. Why is this? Because Sakurai can do it.
Yeah, the Wii has nothing to do with the DS but the concept of pointing at the screen to interact is similar to touching the screen to interact. And the Wii Shop music and Wii Menu music play in the PictoChat stage so I think a playable Mii to go with PictoChat is not too farfetched.
Plus the Mii is pretty well-known to the mainstream audience, right? So I think it makes sense to play as your Mii in Brawl as opposed to... Say, the Cheer Squad or Professor Kawashima. Maybe the Mii will be your "create-a-fighter" character in Brawl to go with the Stage Builder. Remember how people were asking for customable characters to edit? I'm against the idea but I admit that the Mii would be perfect for that. Its at least an actual Nintendo character.

The fact that one of the songs is from Brain Age also makes it feel like Touch! Generations, but nowhere has it been written that it is Touch! Generations (or not yet, but if it is, then it'd be really weird). It's a compilation of Nintendo sources who aren't complex enough and you can link somehow. Just like the Summit, which is from Ice Climber, but nobody is saying that the eggplant means Famicom.
Just a few minutes ago I was arguing with some guy who owns a site showing characters that fans would like to see in the Super Smash Bros. series. The guy insists in using an eggplant to identify the Balloon Fight series, obviously under the influence of the Summit stage. He has made me growl out of disappointment.

Maybe the DS logo for the PictoChat could be used for both the DS and the Wii? What's the logo for the Wii? Just "Wii"? Either way, we will just have to wait and see.
