Time for a new discussion about something or other... this time I have decided to tackle Nintendo's range of genres.
When Nintendo takes on a videogame genre, they don't copycat. This is why we love them so! Rather, they take the basic elements of that genre and mould it into something unique. When they co-created an RPG, they created Pokemon. When they tackled the realtime strategy genre we got Pikmin. Both broke the mould, but remained true to their roots.
Now, the question is, what genre should Nintendo tackle next and why. What do you think they would do with it, how would they change it?

You already see them making a shooter game. I find that Geist will be a unique new shooter with this ghost ability. Who else would have thought of this?

I reckon we need a Sidescrolling Beat 'em Up, since it would allow them to create a new game (possibly franchise) that is something different, but can still take elements from some of there other Sidscrolling games. Would also allow Nintendo to create something such as Viewtiful Joe, not just in terms of gameplay but in terms of a cool, non-"kiddy" character without becoming extremely adult or too mainstream for gamers to like.
I'm not sure how they'd change it though - when I thought about this today (coincidently enough), I thought they could make a Waluigi based beat 'em up (though Wario could be used for a bit more mainstream appeal), and it could use similar techniques from Mario games, ie. powerups and stuff, but in a beat em up context. Of course using a Mario character would probably work against that non-kiddy thing I talked about, though I think it would still work well. I dunno, really.

Some unique space-shooter by Nintendo. Ooh, good idea... Preferably a vertical SHMUP Like Ikaruga, but longer, even better, and maybe a bit easier as well

Aren't the Star Fox games space shooters?

What about Solar Striker - a sequel to that would be welcome in my GC/GBA/DS/Rev

I agree with DIU that a side-scroller beat-em-up would be cool.
For a while I thought a Nintendo-created Vietiful Jow type thing would be cool... then I decided that the Vietiful Joe series looked cool enough, so I am considering getting the GCN VJ games and the DS one.
I have no other suggestions for new genres though...
Well, perhaps something set in a town, isolated away from the world - everything is living and breathing and dynamic, and you play a stranger in this town trying to establish yourself or investigate something weird like that. I dunno...

Let me see... it's a good thing to have a item-enabled racing + shooting game.
... I don't have other ideas.

I'd really like to see Nintendo go head first into MMO games.

I'd really like to see Nintendo go head first into MMO games. Heh heh. Agreed. If anyone could do it, they could. Of course, I could imagine myself becoming horribly addicted to a Pokemon MMO.

If Nintendo aren't secretly working on Pokemon MMO at this very moment (well, not necessairly this exact moment) then I will eat my hat. It's such an obvious idea that would surely be absolutely awesome, and I'd assume Ninty already realise that.

Yeah, kirbychu, I was thinking more like the realistic feel of that Alan Wake game on the Xbox360, but with a bit of focus on establishing the character's life as well as investigating something.
Not a cute game, but something built on strategy and with a strong and evolving storyline that you can influence, possibly.
Something like that...
