Flip, you've really been in this sulken sake for a while. I'm hoping it's just stage 2: Anger. But seriously, snap out of it!
I've always said Sakurai doesn't just chose these (or something along those lines). The reason I made this topic is to crack Sakurai's thinking, and how we could apply it to seeing how would be the best Smash candidate. It's not like he just throws them into the air and whatever he catches gets it. He has a reason for every character.
The thing is, we are going to see franchise expansion then adding more fracnhises. Most of Nintendo's major franchises are in Brawl. AW is really the only one not to have anything yet (but there are some reasons why it hasn't yet). Besides that, what other franchises are there too add. On top of that, what franchises are going to have the wealth of characters. Answer: The ones in Smash already. Mario, DK, Zelda, Kirby, Starfox, Pokemon, Fire Emblem. They all have a wealth of usable characters.
Another thing is there is a limit on Japanese only characters. Lucas and Marth are the only two, and Marth was in Melee and will probably get in the West with FE 11. So there was one Japanese only character out of 35. We can tell that there was definatly a move to keep in world wide (save Ness). So Takamaru and Sakupon (and many others) were kept out since they were not know to the Western audience.
But that leads to the biggest point. He did it not to spit on anyone else to deny access to another franchise. This is why we have assist trophies. Find it odd why Lyn is an assist, a character whon was widely requested. Not everyone can be played. He picked character people wanted, and would like. Krystal I think is a good example. With Starfox, the normal combinations were Fon/Falco/Krystal Fox/Falco/Wolf or Fox/Krystal/Wolf. Usually when Wolf or Falco wasn't it, it was to make space. A good amount of the time, Krystal was cut becuase she "sucked". In fact, a lot opf people here hated her. So, naturally, Sakurai kept her out and added a character he thought people would like. Kind of back fired. And while I'm at it, the clones. Sakurai isn't lazy. Lucas and Wolf were done the way they were becuase it made the most sence. Ness didn't have any of his moves from Earthbound, so why would Lucas be different. So, naturally, give Lucas Ness's specials. Wolf never fought outside of the Arwing till assault. So how would you make him. Give him the same specials. I mean, wouldn't he use the same technology. He did it because it made sense.
The problems is two fold 1)People feel a character "should" be in Smash. X franchise needs character or X franchise needs more. That's never the case. Why add an uninteresting character just becuase it fills some quota (and that's what your doing). And 2)It's not Flip's Smash or Smashchu's Smash. It's Smash, for everyone. He develops it to make a wide array of people happy. This is in part why we see expanded franchises and many different characters. He makes it so that someone will find a fighter for them.
So, in short, Smash has a wide variety of characters and tries it's best to add everyone in their own way. Now move on so we can smash in 11 days.
