^ And the irony is that the excuse I get the most is that Nintendo's games are generally higher quality than non-Nintendo games. I don't usually venture too far to dispute that because if that's their opinion, than that's their opinion. Suggesting that that opinion may be based on blind loyalty would be an insult to their intelligence, but I quietly suspect it.
And while we're on the subject of loyalty, make Nintendo earn it, please. They're not trying to advance games as an art form. They don't care about your health. It's a corporation that wants your money. Nintendo will sell you garbage if you'll pay for it. Nobody is making you buy their products. If you're not satisfied, take your money elsewhere.
And guess what: The cheapest alternative without having to buy separate hardware is third party games.
Nintendo has had to win me back a time or two. If they head in a direction I don't like, there's no reason why I wouldn't walk away in a heartbeat. Whether or not I loved their games 5, 10 or 20 years ago is irrelevant. True, there's some sentimental value, but that doesn't mean I should let them waste my time and money.
And that's my rant.

^ An alternative solution would be to buy a different system...

^ Absolutely, as I indicated. But that's if you're willing to spend that much extra money, or leave Nintendo behind in the next generation. I was totally a Sega fan during the Dreamcast era because the N64 just didn't cut it for me. If the DC had survived, I might well still be a Sega fan now.
The point is that just because you own a Nintendo system does not mean you have to buy Nintendo games. They're not the only option available.

But there are really no good third party games for the Wii. Maybe three or four. Actually, now that I think about it, there are a small amount of good first party games. Let's face it. All these consoles suck if you think about it. As I said before handhelds are the way to go.

^ You're probably not wrong, but I don't think it's as dire as you make it sound. And getting slightly more off topic, there was a fascinating opinion piece from Next Gen called " Yuji Horii Was Right to Opt for DS." It was written a year ago January and hints at how handheld systems are finally coming into their own, exemplifying Horii's decision to develop Dragon Quest IX for the DS. It's interesting because it suggests that handhelds are sort of in the same position that consoles were in 15-20 years ago, and consoles are now sort of like what arcades were at that time.

But the thing is, the Wii is hugely successful!
If, like me, you didn't own a PS2, and rarely bought third party titles for the Gamecube (and seeing as the majority here are Nintendo fans, I'm guessing that's the case) then there's a lot of good stuff to play on the Wii right now. You have Metal Slug Anthology, Zack & Wiki, Bully, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Guitar Hero III, Elebits... and those are just the ones I can remember.
I have a theory. Is our moaning to do with the fact we have more money to spend on games each year than we did at the launch of older game systems? I mean, the first 12 months are usually a dead zone for a console, right?
The following experiment takes the first 18 months of each system's release schedule from Nintendo...
Super NES
Super Mario World, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Sim City, LoZ: A Link to the Past
Total: 5 games New series: 3 (F-Zero, Pilotwings, Sim City) Major releases: 2 (Mario, Zelda)
Nintendo 64
Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, Blast Corps, Star Fox 64, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Goldeneye 007, Diddy Kong Racing, Yoshi's Story
Total: 10 games New series: 3 (Blast Corps., Star Wars, Goldeneye) Major releases: 3 (Mario 64, Mario Kart, Goldeneye)
Gamecube
Luigi's Mansion, Wave Race: Blue Storm, Pikmin, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Animal Crossing, Animal Leader, Doshin the Giant, NBA Courtside 2002, Super Mario Sunshine, Disney's Magical Mirror, Star Fox Adventures, Eternal Darkness, Mario Party 4, The Wind Waker, Nintendo Puzzle Collection, Metroid Prime
Total: 16 games New series: 5 (Pikmin, Animal Crossing (US), Animal Leader, Doshin the Giant, Eternal Darkness) Major releases: 5 (Luigi's Mansion, Melee, Sunshine, Zelda, Metroid)
Wii
Wii Sports, Twilight Princess, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Wii Play, Pokémon Battle Revolution, Excite Truck, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Eyeshield 21: Field Saikyou no Senshi, Super Paper Mario, Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree, Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast, Mario Party 8, Forever Blue, Mario Strikers Charged, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario & Sonic at The Olympic Games, Wii Fit, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Minna no Joushiki Ryoku Televi, Mario Kart Wii, Link's Crossbow Training
Total games: 22 games New series: 6 (Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Excite Truck, Forever Blue, Minna no Joushiki) Major Releases: 6 (Wii Sports, Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart)
Now remind me... which of the above consoles is generally considered the most popular with gamers?

I believe you are referring to the UK, as us in the US seem to be getting less money each year. fucking Bush and his damn war funding.

I meant generally, as we get older. I don't know about you, but I'm no longer having to choose between the occasional game or two every Christmas and birthday. I buy systems at launch, I buy games when I like the look of them.
50p a week pocket money vs. a working man's paycheck makes all the difference.

I wonder if Nintendo fans sort of glamorize past consoles in their own mind. You think back to the GameCube, N64, etc, and you think "those were good times! Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros. Melee, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime.... What awesome systems!" And it makes it almost impossible for the current gen to live up to the image you see thru the rose-tinted glasses. But if you look at the 18-month release list that Fry posted, you'll see that we have our Mario and Zelda and Metroid and Smash, and they're pretty darn good. Conversely, do people have such endearing memories of the GBA, GBC or original GB? If not, then does that, perhaps, make the DS look better than it actually is? I mean, the system is filled with trashy games, so much so that Yoshiki Okamoto thinks it's destined to cause an Atari-style industry crash in Japan.

^ The idea of people thinking the 'good old days' is better than what we currently have is certainly not limited to Nintendo systems, nor to video games in general, though.

Yeah, after that racist "Teach you kid Spanish" game that came out last year it's pretty easy to see the bottom falling out of this genre. If that came out in America, just imagine the crap in Japan. EDIT: It was called Spanish For Everyone, and I'm still amazed it got an E rating. Just proves the ESRB don't actually play the games. (/half sarcasm)

I haven't heard of this one... what kind of thing was it?

It wasn't really racist, it just used a bunch of negative (racial?) stereotypes for its Spanish characters (the kids a thief, the dads a drug dealer, the aunty is a hooker - all are implied, not stated, though).

Shame is Nintendo like to stress that their games and hardware are unique bespoke one-of-a-kind yada yada yada but they just keep pumping out more and more sequels. Just another reason why I haven't bought a DS game since Zelda and why I can't be arsed to buy a Wii.
Mind you they all do it. Which is probably why I can't be arsed with video games in general anymore.
IF I HAD POWER I'D HAVE EVERYONE NEUTERED.
