After reading a segment on Destructoid.com called " The Memory Card" which brings up moments of gaming that are truly innovative, surprsing, remarkable and sometimes breaking the 4th wall. I wanted to try and give a defined topic for this thread like each week or when ever everyone just got tired of it. So this week the topic of game innovation is for boss battles.Say your thoughts about BB, what are your favourites and what could be done to make them even better. EDIT: Yes, you can talk about 3rd party games.

Well, since this is in the Contemporary Nintendo forum, I imagine this meant to only cover Nintendo games.
*Ganon -Specifically, the battle you have with him in Ocarina of Time. This one of the best boss battles on the N64, in my opinion. Two forms, plus he tries to bring the tower down on top of you. Epic.
*Giygas (Earthbound) - This is one though boss if you don't know what to do. Who would've thought that Paula's prayer was the only way to defeat him?

Definitely the alien in Conker's BFD. It was nothing at all like the fight with Bowser in Mario 64.

When it comes to top boss battles, a small handful really stand out for me. The SNES was definitely the place to find some of the best.
I don't really need to mention the astounding Yoshi's Island and its excellent bosses and epic final battle.
Or Ocarina of Time which - yes - has a brilliant final battle. But it was the Water Temple boss that scared the crap out of me... when you see Link through its eyes as it swims up to you, and then raises up above Link, but still seems to be underwater... the first time I saw it was creepy. It was quite an easy battle, but it stuck in my memory. Queen Gohma was awesome too.
The Star Fox series actually provides some of my most memorable moments. When defeating a boss becomes a cinematic sequence, it always blows me away. When you destroy the Space Armada Core in Star Fox, that silent moment as the ship explodes, and just as your distant speck of an Arwing flies out of the wreckage the music pipes in and makes your hairs stand up.
Then there's the Macbeth boss in Star Fox 64, where hitting the switches will cause it to switch tracks and blow up the weapon facility. That was a fantastic moment.
Hmm... in all of the above it seems to be the cinematics rather than the boss battle itself that I like. And come to think of it... most of my favourite games remain unfinished because of horrible boss battles. Especially you, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Dodge every attack with 1HP... That's just cruel!

I've often said the OOT Ganon battle I've never played (never beat OOT, fixing that right now) but watched. Amazing battle, and the most cinematic Nintendo battle I've ever seen.
The Galaxy Bowser battles all left me speechless.
The fight with the Hind-D gunship in Metal Gear Solid/Twin Snakes is one of my favorites, too. Before the whole scene starts, you have to run up a seemingly endless staircase being chased by guards. Then you reach the top of the communications tower and you see a gunship ready to gun you down, the only choice is to take a rope and drop down the tower to safety because the elevator's not working for you. Repelling down the communications tower dodging rounds of bullets was amazing, then getting a ground-to-air portable missile launcher to freaking FIGHT a gunship is one of the most breathtaking moments. Then you beat him, watch him spiral to the snowy ground in an explosion, and smile at Snake's words for the pilot: "That takes care of the cremation."

That battle against MARX in Kirby Super Star remains my personal favorite to this day. The dramatic music... the awesome looking scrolling backdrop... the screen filling attacks that MARX himself throws out... that feeling of excitement that courses through your veins as you wittle down MARX's health...and then you finally destroy him as he colorfully erupts off screen... and NOVA implodes in a fantastic screen-wide flash of light...with that epic ending reprise of the Green Greens arrangement from The Great Cave Offensive... all while Kirby triumphantly flies back to his home planet of Popstar for some well deserved rest. ...Man, what an ending.

Dasher koopa Misire just reminded me of something.
The fight with Solidus Snake in MGS2 was awesome. Playing as Raiden with the Katana, and you have that epic music and the fact that you're fighting on the capitol building was just beautiful. Seeing the American flag was inspirational as well. (apparently, the flag was going to fall on Solidus after he died, but they cut that out for some reason...).

I'll like to point out that you can talk about 3rd party games.
Some of the coolest boss battles i'm done would also have to be:
Ganondorf battle of OoT.
SF64/Lylatwars Andross battle and also the battle on Zonese (that toxic planet where you first meet up with Katt Monroe) where you had to use bombs instead of lasers to defeat the boss, that really surpised me the first time, I think I had to look at a guide to see how to beat it the first time.
The boss in the casino stage of Super Mario Sunshine where you had to throw chili peppers into it's mouth.
The 16km fall Ridley boss battle in MP3:C now that was pretty cool, it made me wonder what was going to kill me first, Ridley or the fall?
SMG's Bowser battles were very cool and had great orchastrated music (that reminds me of Star Wars) to go with them.
I'm also heard about (but not played) the amazing (and 4th wall breaking) boss battles of the Metal Gear Solid games that sound very cool.
One of the ideas I had for a boss battle though was one where the boss you are fighting is so ugly/you could not comprehend it if you looked at it, the battle would be played out instead by looking through the bosses eyes and your character would be instead be automatcally running around dodging, the only part the player would control would be the angle of their weapon (a gun of some sort) and be shooting the entrie section of the screen, thus blinding the boss and defeating it.
Another idea is of a boss battle on top off a speeding train where you don't attack but spend the time leading the boss into traps and then dodge at the last second and end up hurting the boss.

Puppet Gannon from Wind Waker is probably my favorite. The room itself is downright amazing. But the reelections in the water is what made that battle.

Puppet Gannon from Wind Waker is probably my favorite. The room itself is downright amazing. But the reelectionsin the water is what made that battle. Reelections, huh Spud? Anyway, I've always liked the bosses in Kirby games. Nova and Marx are awesome bosses. Nova was a great mix of an R-Type shooter and a regular Kirby boss. Man-Frog already covered while I liked Marx. Zelda games have always had amazing bosses. One in particular stands out for me: Ganon in Wind Waker. Just an amazing fight. The use of countering is perfect. Waiting for Zelda to shoot him was intense. And the final strike is my favorite Zelda moment period. I only wish the fight was harder, but that can be applied to that entire game. Another favorite that offered actual innovation was the final fight with Mother Brain in Super Metroid. The final part where the Baby Metroid sacrifices itself to save its mother is one of the first uses of a cinematic in a boss battle, I think. The fight was very well done as well. It's such a shock to see it go from a brain in a jar to a T-rex thing!

As far as Nintendo BB's go, my favourite has to be against Bowser in SMW with his logic-defying steel balls and the hopping-mad clown car.
(I'm not sure the following really counts as a boss battle, but...)
For third-party boss battles, PW:JFA's battle to give Matt Engarde the guilty sentence he deserves, whilst saving Maya from Shelley De Killer is, for me, truly memorable and satisfying.

BUMP! Okay I wanted to bring this thread back to life but I can't think of a topic, anyone got an idea for a discussion topic? One of the ideas I had for a boss battle though was one where the boss you are fighting is so ugly/you could not comprehend it if you looked at it, the battle would be played out instead by looking through the bosses eyes and your character would be instead be automatcally running around dodging, the only part the player would control would be the angle of their weapon (a gun of some sort) and be shooting the entrie section of the screen, thus blinding the boss and defeating it. Something like that was done in Battletoads on the NES. Dang, I thought my idea was really original too.
