According to GoNintendo, the latest issue of Nintendo Power reveals that the Wii Castlevania title is actually a one-on-one fighting game. Well, IMHO, it's not a bad idea, but it's pretty easy to make a bad fighting game. To be honest, my confidence is low.

Ick... That's a bad idea. I was hoping it'd be the 1999 game hinted at for years now. Hopefully it'll have the N64 cast since it's got a character form a game not even out yet!

Actually, as I said, I don't think it's a bad idea. In fact, I kind of like the idea. But it's too easy to "phone in" the development of a fighting game, and they're hard enough to do well even when you put the effort in. Still, there are a lot of cool characters in the CV world, and it'll be fun to see them in a fighting game.
On the other hand, there's still the matter of the DS connectivity with Order of Ecclesia. I still want to know what the deal with that is.

It seems they keep the CV "gameplay" to some extent, and the way you fight requires the Wii controls. You use the Nunchuk and the Wiimote separately for movements and pulling off attacks. And to use subweapons, you need hearts. And occasionally enemies will appear as you battle across the environs. So it is basically CV on a smaller stage scale but more zoomed in on the battles. I'm just glad Maria and Simon are in. Here's hoping for Richter and Sypha!

This news is very shocking, but it COULD turn out well. The CV franchise has a rich character base to pull from, the post above highlights some interesting concepts, and, if all goes well, it'll control well. Not exactly what I would want from a Wii CV title, but I'll pay attention to it nevertheless.

GoNintendo adds a few more details: Some more snippets from the Nintendo Power article…
- Maria unlocked through DS to Wii connectivity - special move gauge that builds up to a move that is much like a “final smash” - some sort of WFC interaction - character models by Takeshi Obata (Death Note) - Quote from Igarashi “I guess some fans may worry about the game quality, but I am confident that we can achieve a very high-quality game. I think that fans…will see that it stays true to the Castlevania series. Even though this is a fighting game I can guarantee that it will be fun.” I wonder if this game will play more like Soul Calibur or Smash Bros/Power Stone. EDIT: Jeux-France has more blurry scans from NP. I have to say that most of the character designs seem rather tasteless.

The designs are a little strange, that they are. Maria's in particular reminds me a bit of Silent Hill. Simon's rockin' the bare midriff, as well...granted, his Chronicles design does a bit as well, but this one seems more goofy. And Dracula's armor is on the verge of gaudy. XD Ah well...maybe I'll like them more later.

New screens from Kotaku. I have to say, the character designs still don't appeal to me at all. The thing is, I consider the character design to be one of the most appealing parts of a fighting game. So, for me, it's a major strike against this particular fighting game.

IGN has post a hands-on preview of an apparently very early build of the game. There are also a bunch of screen shots. According to the article, the game plays similar to Power Stone. That's a good thing, but the controls sound a little weird. Aside from that, I'm still having a hard time getting behind this game.

It appears that a teaser trailer has been shown for a next gen Castlevania game...on PS360. And all the Wii gets is Castlevania Judgment? Not cool, IGA, not cool.

A little bitter, are we, Nester? I would agree, though. I haven't viewed the trailer (and won't, since dial-up would take forever)...so I suppose I should go do some research.

Well, Iga mentioned that WiiWare was a good means to continue the 2D Vania games. Maybe we'll get some Castlevania "Rebirth" type deal for WiiWare? I mean, shit: Konami's doing it with Gradius.

Well, I guess as a Castlevania fan with a Wii, I feel a little slighted. A strange fighting game doesn't make up for a full-fledged Castlevania. The trailer doesn't really show anything, however, so we really don't know what kind of game it'll be. Likely 3D, which hasn't worked well for Castlevania in the past, but Iga has made it clear that he wants to keep trying. Well, Iga mentioned that WiiWare was a good means to continue the 2D Vania games. Maybe we'll get some Castlevania "Rebirth" type deal for WiiWare? I mean, hobo: Konami's doing it with Gradius. I'm all for that, but I'm still waiting for Castlevania III and Rondo of Blood.

Rondo of Blood is a necessity. How can Japan get it, but we can't? Ugh...

Actually, we did get Rondo of Blood. Another reason you guys should get a PSP.
