Other sites such as 1up.com seem to have contadicting articles on Wii Music. It appears that IGN just can't understand this game or thinks that this is a game for the hardcore and needs to be like Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Guitar Hero and Rock Band aren't for the hardcore either. 'Casual' gamers are able to handle those games fine. I honestly feel that Nintendo is completely underestimating the skill level of its 'casual' gamers and are giving them absolutely nothing of value since they believe they won't be able to handle it.

I honestly feel that Nintendo is completely underestimating the skill level of its 'casual' gamers and are giving them absolutely nothing of value since they believe they won't be able to handle it. Well, you used "casual" wrong. Not a big deal, everyone does. Here it is Hardcore-These guys are super cereal. They are the most likely to spend more time one a message board then playing the games they talk about. They greatly wait the next big sequel and love aspects like graphics, story, and depth matter the most to them. They usually own multiple consoles, and can play games for hours (or be on message boards). Feel strong about game as an art. Big on online (almost a must for them). Play PC games a lot. Casual-Gamers who play games, but play them as a hobby. This group IS NOT the target audience Nintendo is going after. They sometimes buy multiple consoles, but may be content with one. They play games as a hobby rather then a way of life. They enjoy complex games, but can also enjoy simpler games. They love multiplayer games they can play with friends. They enjoy games with a medium difficulty. If it's balls hard (i.e. Contra) they'll stray away. Main focus is on fun. Stray away from retail PC games, and may play freeware games and Peggel. Non-Gamer-People who don't play games at all, or have only started to play games since the DS and Wii. Gaming is a fun hobby and nothing more. They like games that are easy to play and offer quick enjoyment. This does not mean they play easy games. It's about ease of use. Big focus on multiplayer games. Enjoy games that accentuate (Brain Age) or simulate real life (Wii Sports/Wii Music). The best example of this was an event at USF called Overkill. It was pretty much a lan event for PC games, but they also had console games, and chess. See, the hardcore are the people who lugged their PC to the event and who even registered in advance as to get a seat. The casuals are the ones who came for the console games like Rockband, Brawl, and Halo 3. They would sometimes mingle in the lobby with others and talk, play chess, or even went outside and played volleyball. The event lasted till 3a.m. The casual gamers left at a reasonable hour, but the PC guys stayed till 3, or even longer (some until 8). But there was also a soccer game that you could hear across the way. These guys were the non-gamers. The number of hardcore was the fewest. Out of the available 75 seats, less then half of that showed up. The Casuals however, numbered in many as they watched the tournaments and tried to get into a game. There were more people from this group who doubled the core. They registered latter (and didn't get a PC seat), but also left at a reasonable hour. The Non-gamers never showed up, but there were a lot more of them at the soccer game. The PS3 and 360 are aiming at the hardcore The PS2 and GBA aimed at the casuals The Wii and DS aim at the non-gamer Matt's problem is he is playing the game like Guitar Hero. If you sere, his main focus is hitting the notes. It is far to easy to do, and not fast enough, so he dislikes it. What he doesn't realize is that he is just a trained drone. He is trying to "win" and tries to hit only the notes that appear rather then make his own song. Becuase he expects Wii Music to be the exact opposite of what it is, he dubs it kiddy and says it sucks. Thing is, he doesn't know what he is doing.

Its not like there are concrete definitions for these things (hell, there's another thread on this very forum with different definitions of hardcore / casual), but whatever, if it makes you feel better, I'll use the term 'non-gamers'.
But here's the thing - even in Wii Sports, you have control over what is going on. If you miss hit in Wii Tennis, the ball goes out, if you swing and miss in Wii Baseball, its a strike. There's actual gameplay in there. And, though its apparently shocking to believe, non-gamers can handle that concept. They don't need to be babied.
But then there's Wii Music. The 'game' that fixes up any wrong notes you play. There is absolutely no challenge present in it whatsoever, you can play perfectly or you could bang the controller on your head a few times - either way, it works out the same. Wii Music isn't a 'music creator' game either, Smashchu - its a rhythm game. A ridiculously dumbed down rhythm game. Yes, you can 'freestyle' in certain parts, but the idea is supposed to be that you hit the notes when it tells you to hit the notes. Except for, like I said, it doesn't matter if you do or you don't, because.... well I'm not sure why. But that's how it rolls.
I really think the general public would actually enjoy a Guitar Hero / Rock Band much, much more, as theres an actual sense of accomplishment there. Maybe add in a 'can't fail' mode (I beleive RB has this... maybe GH:WT too?), so even if you suck you get to play through the whole song and boom, instant non-gamer fun. Fuck this air drums you aren't really playing bullshit

The picture that AK showed... That defines the difference between Rock Band/Guitar Hero and Wii Music perfectly. I know PLENTY of non-gamers who love Guitar Heroes. It's probably the reason why it's the number one third party game on the Wii. It's simple, accessible, and functional. By contrast, Wii Music is just simple.

Indeed. Wii Music is not a game but a Fisher Price toy. I've seen similar thing where a little baby hits or wiggles something and music comes out. That's what Wii Music is.

No, Wii Music is the real dog. The picture isn't necessarily about Wii Music. The point is sometimes gamers see games that are just easy (the plastic dog), but that's not what they want. If it was, then third party games would be doing a lot better then they are now. I comes from this article, which I suggest you guys read. I'm not trying to insult anyone mind you, but the truth is that people often mix up these titles and use them without understanding them. I assume that is what is going on here. Guitar Hero and Wii Music are not related despite the fact people do so. Guitar Hero is for casual players and is a rhythm game, where Wii Music is for non-gamers and is a music game (as you can actually make music).

I read the article. And Wii Music is not a game where you make music, the music is already made, now you just waggle to it.

I have to agree with Captain Underwear on this one, if the interpretation is correct that the notes are always going to be corrected any way I don't see how this even constitutes a "game" as much as a "novelty".

EGM said something about the game being a succes because it's so easy. And to picture videos of "Baby plays mario theme".

Which is why it's easy to compare to a Fisher Price toy.

Wii Music is about making music, and enjoying it. The song are suppose to be altered. You see, Matt's problem was he was just tried to hit the notes. The notes are few with many gaps. He was suppose to make his own notes. It's not just altering songs, but there is also a jam session mode where you can simply play the instruments. Heck, the main mode of the game is called "jam".

Still though, it's a bargain bin game. It's the type of game you find hidden from the rest with a price tag of $3.00.
If Nintendo charges over $20 for this game, I'll go berserk. RAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGEEE!!!!!

Reading the comments, no one has escaped their little box. They still think only in the view of the "core". Wii Music is a defining game of this generation, but few understand it. It's not a mystery, but becuase they don't see beyond their conditioned state, they see the game as "under them". This article may make sence of it all. I read the article. And Wii Music is not a game where you make music, the music is already made, now you just waggle to it. Good sir, you suffer from core-idice. You see games in a strict boundary. See, Captain Underware, you define The Industry the best. You only see a game as right and wrong. If there is no way to be wrong, then it sucks, and you define it as a lesser game. Games are not about winning and losing, but about having fun.CU, can you play a musical instrument. I would bet the answer may range from no to yeah, "but not well". I can tell you I can't play a single one. I can tell you I defiantly can't. Musical instruments are not easy, and in out daily lives it is very hard to master one, and even then for us to be able to preform. The point of Wii Music is to play instruments. Nothing more, nothing less. Instruments are hard, so it may not be fun to have some kind of right or wrong. Miyamote said he does not play the guitar but practices trhe guitar. If you've ever tried playing a musical instrument, you'll know it's not easy. I've tried to simply play the piano but to no avail. I can't just play an instrument. It takes YEARS of practice to do so. So, wouldn't it be fun to have a game that makes it easy to make music.
Matt did not play the game correctly. The goal is not to match up the music to the notes. Anyone who thought that, is dumb (as Matt and all other journalist are). In that particular game, you are suppose to make your own song. Its to alter the song as you see fit. The song only gives basic beats as this is all you need to have the song work. Did anyone not see all the empty space? The game sets it up for you to do so. The games wants you to create music. It wants you to appreciate the simple joy of making a song, or even being able to play it yourself. That is Wii Music It is clear to me that no one here understands this game. Everyone is appalled by the fact it is "too easy" to hit the notes. This only proves you are just as much of a sheep as Matt is. Heck, you are all probably following the head sheep, who is following another to the slaughter. The purpose of games was never to do something right. Games are meant for fun. Gameplay literally means the play of the game. Right or wrong means nothing. The software allows ANYONE to play music, those who it may not be attracted to. You may say "learn a real instrument", but it's hard to do that. People send their whole lives trying to play just one instrument. So why hasn't anyone made a game about being a master of any instrument. The truth is everyone has misidentified what is a music game. Guitar Hero is a rhythm game becuase you are only following the rhythm of the song. Wii Music is a music game becuase you have freedom to do what you wish with music. There is a mode about simply playing the instruments. SO, Matt wanted to play Guitar Hero, but he was playing Wii Music. He should have spent less time trying to play the song right and spent more time making the song sound interesting or new. Make it right too him. The hardcore sit on the sideline and gaff at one of the most revolutionary games of this generation, one that defines the Blue Ocean Strategy. Soon, games may just be like this. Winning and losing matter only to the core. Everyone else is more concerned whether these games are fun. The core say the non gamers will enjoy Guitar Hero more becuase the core enjoys Guitar Hero more. The core does not understand that many players do not have the finger dexterity to play this. But these non-gamers enjoy having fun. If making music, with air drums you aren't really playing, is fun, then it is fun. Experience videos have shown that the mass loves and enjoys this game. They care not about right and wrong.

No. I get it. It's like Mario Paint Composer, like I said before. That's it. The cat and dog noise is similar to the ones in Mario Paint, as well as other noises.
The big differences are better sound quality, control, and graphics. If it were a complete remake of Mario Paint, that would be a different story. But it's not. It's a cheapass way for Nintendo to make even more money for "innovation". This is not innovation. This is lame.
Smashchu, I don't really think you know what you're talking about. You say none of us play instruments? What does that have to do with anything! It's a game. That's all. A piece of hobo game not even worth the 2 minute gameplay it consists of.

I agree with that having fun thing, and I'm not only in the core. The thing is, if there is no challenge, then it's not fun for me. That's why winning and losing is present, to present a challenge to have fun with. If I wanted fun without a challenge, then I'll just boot up the game and run around. Not so much fun shaking a wii mote in random directions like that TMNT game. And even worse, what if you don't need to use the wiimote at all?
