- Wii didn't come out as good as I expected, really. Mainly because of the lack of enjoyable games. The ones I currently own are good, and others I tried, like Metal Slug Anthology, look fine too. But most others are just... they have the Wii control with it just for its own sake. No depths of those games are observed.
Agreed.
However, it's beginning to pick up, the only problem is that the good third party games (De Blob, Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes) are apparently not selling as much as they should be... those are the games we need to support, so more like them come out.
Have you tried any of them?
Some other games that I enjoyed were:
Red Steel - I know, it got average reviews, but it's still quite good. It was a disappointment, but it's still good. Let's hope that Red Steel 2 is better... the Metroid Prime 3 is a better FPS, but it lacks multiplayer, and is more of an adventure game with FPS elements.
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - At first I found it a bit boring, but then it began to pick up. One of the best Nintendo-published Wii games to date.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - I was disappointed by this game, but I also had my hopes too high. It's still the Nintendo multiplayer champion, a must-have for any gatherings with (hardcore, casual gamers would prefer Wii Sports) friends.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - I see what you mean regarding Wii controls for "it's own sake" - this is definitely true in this case. It's essentially a really, really good GameCube game, only on the Wii, but it's still worth getting (you likely have it already, this was the most popular game in the Wii's launch). The Wii-style controls are not particularly game-breaking, in fact they're quite good, but they're not
Trauma Center: Second Opinion - If you don't already have this on the DS, it's definitely worth getting. Yes, it was originally made for the DS, but it may as well be a ground-up made-for-Wii title.
Super Mario Galaxy - Not as good as SM64 (based on the standards of the time), but it's still a great game, and definitely a worthy sequel.
De Blob - This is what the Wii should be all about. De Blob is another genre-busting title created for Nintendo's consoles - it's a game about painting. A paint revolution, in fact. Against colorless Marxists. Doesn't sound like a great game yet? Well, it also has a good multiplayer mode.
Zack and Wiki - A decent puzzle game. While I do not have the same enthusiasm for it that IGN and many other reviewers do, I still think that it's one of the best games to come out on the Wii so far.
Resident Evil 4 - If you missed out on this one back in the GameCube/PS2 days (I did), then you should definitely get this.
Some games that got good reviews but I've yet to get are No More Heroes, Okami and Super Paper Mario. It'd probably be worth checking those out. Check some more reviews if you're interested in any of the above games.
Avoid:
Rayman Raving Rabbids - Fun at first, but it's quite quick. It was good at the Wii launch when we had barely any games, but now I'd recommend skipping it. The sequel is apparently more of the same, although I haven't played it. The multiplayer mode has a surprising lack of fun.
SSX Blur - I enjoyed it on the PS2, so I thought that the latest Wii edition of the series would be as good - I was sorely mistaken. Rather than a deserving sequel to the previous SSX games, this game was one with terrible controls - controls that were not even explained in the tutorial.
You shouldn't really expect the Wii controllers to be some sort of grand innovation in gaming. I think it's as good as the old "abxy"-style controllers, only that most developers have not gotten used to developing games for it yet, it's not really better. I think you just have your expectations too high. Lower them a bit, and what you have is a great system, especially for multiplayer party games and drawing in casuals, but one that is also lacking the depth of the offerings on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Double post!
I never played Okami, Bully, Resident Evil 4 (shame on me, I know)... and they're all on Wii now, so I'm going to play them or have played them. I did play Jungle Beat and Pikmin, etc. etc... so I'm not going to buy them again.
I totally agree - the same happened to me.
This is also just another sign that you're getting older. I went through a similar thing - suddenly you don't have the time to spend unlocking everything or completing everything. Especially if you spend most of your free time on websites talking about games
The same happened to me as well. SSBB is substantially better than SSBM, but I played the latter more because I had less money, less games, and more time.
