www.thespeedgamers.com/For all my fellow Americans, this is a group currently playing through every Zelda game. The purpose is for a charity called Allie's House, founded by Toby Kieth. Allie's House helps families with children with cancer with financial aid. They're goal is to accumulate $6000 in donations. They're up to 1/3 of that and Link's Awakening as of this posting. They've asked those who can't donate to spread the word, so I'm doing my part for a good cause.

Thread revival! The Speed Gamers are currently in the middle of a Final Fantasy marathon, and are raising money for ACT, the Autism Care and Treatment charity. I wanted to mention it because one of the guys from The Speed Gamers showed up at the Retroware TV forums and said that most advertising for the site comes via word of mouth because most major gaming sites won't cover them. The marathon will last until July 24. Currently, they have raised over US$35,000 -- more than all of the money they've raised in past marathons combined!It's funny how they can just stream a gaming marathon online, and people will suddenly donate to a charity. But I thanked him for the good work they were doing; I think it shows a really positive side of the gaming community. |

As I type this, The Speed Gamers are just a couple of hours one hour away from the beginning of their Mega Man marathon. They'll be playing all nine original games, all eight X games, both Legends games, and various others over the course of 72 hours. The charity they're representing for this marathon is the Earth Day Network. EDIT: Actually, it's just one hour. Stupid Daylight Savings. EDIT 2: Scratch that. I was right the first time. I can't seem to read clocks right today.  |

Well, the Mega Man marathon wrapped up last night three-and-a-half hours over schedule. It took the extra time to complete their speedrun of Battle Network 3. Another player was working on Mega Man and Bass, but they stopped as soon as BN3 was finished. (The commentator played the song " Don't You (Forget About Me)" over the ending credits.  ) All together, they finished all nine original series games, X1-X6 and X8, Mega Man 64 and Legends 2, Mega Man X Command Mission, and Battle Network 3. They originally intended to play through X7, Network Transmission, and I think some others, but didn't get to them. Unfortunately, by the end of the marathon, they had only raised about $5,200, falling short of their $7,000 goal, but a few large donations in the hours after the marathon pushed it over the top. Their next marathon is scheduled for October, and for Halloween, they will be playing the Resident Evil series. |

Just a quick heads-up. Starting in one week on October 30, The Speed Gamers will begin their 48-hour Resident Evil Marathon, just in time for Halloween! The planned games include Resident Evil 0, 1 (GC remake), 2, 3, Code: Veronica, 4, and 5, plus Resident Evil Gaiden on the GBC. Capcom has also gotten officially involved with the marathon, providing prizes for the various contests that will be held. The charity they're playing for is the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation. |

Capcom's opened up their arms to fan projects like this, which I think is both great PR and awesome for the fans to have the company backing you. Hope they do well!
I'd probably do pretty well at RE4 myself in terms of speed. Maybe I should time myself sometime.

The RE marathon is in-progress. I'll keep the post at LVLs up-to-date on anything notable. Or, y'know, you could just watch the marathon yourself.  Watching these marathons makes me want to play the games myself. I should give RE0 or the REmake a run-thru since I went thru the trouble of unlocking the special weapons and everything. |

The Speed Gamers' Resident Evil marathon is officially over. It actually lasted 49 hours because the time change happened in the middle of it.
They surpassed their targeted goal by raising over $8,200 by the end of the marathon, but they will continue to accept donations until November 3.
They completed all of the games they planned except for two. Their designated player for RE3 and Code: Veronica had technical difficulties, and wasn't able to participate. Another player attempted Code: Veronica instead, but he was unable to finish it. RE3 was replaced with a co-op playthru of The Umbrella Chronicles.
Their next marathon is currently scheduled for December 18, during which they will play the Pokemon series, and will legitimately catch all 493 Pokemon. (Even the rare ones that can't be caught. They said they "have it covered.") All of the Pokemon will be collected on a single cartridge which will be given away as a contest prize at the end of the marathon.

Wow, I wonder how much time they are dedicating to that little feat. To get all the Pokemon in the latest games, don't you need to play through at least the following:
FireRed & LeafGreen
Colosseum or HeartGold & SoulSilver (for the GS Pokemon)
Ruby & Sapphire
Diamond & Pearl
That's at least 7 games, and unless Nintendo is supplying them with access to the legendaries then you'll need to throw in a handful of the others as well.
Sure, you could probably catch 'em all in a solid day of play, but if they're evolving them as well then that'll take forever!

From what I hear, You need Diamond / Pearl / Platinum for 4th gen Pokémon, and you need HeartGold / SoulSilver for the rest, since earlier ones, including legends, can be caught after... unlocking stuff.
I don't have any specific knowledge about it though. I just heard it along the way. Probably the result of killing the GBA slot. You can transfer with GBA, but it's not a must and can be replaced with some sort of option to visit the old lands... I dunno.
Plus if they have all systems of the GB/GBA/DS line, there's no problem anyway.
And I like how they give the game with a complete save file as a prize. I hope I can buy games with saves on the second hand market.

The Pokemon marathon (or "Pokethon") will last 72 hours. Based on what they said during the RE marathon, there will be six or seven people playing various versions of the game all at once, and they'll trade with each other.
I think someone said they bought used copies on eBay (or somewhere) that had the legendary Pokemon, and they would use those to trade into the games they'll play for the marathon. They also alluded to Nintendo being involved somehow, but I don't know if that's actually going to happen. The official details have not been revealed yet.
But their official site is already skinned for Pokemon.

The Pokemon marathon will be starting today at 7:00 pm EST/4:00 pm PST, and will last for 72 hours. The charity they'll be playing for is Ally's House, which raises money for children with cancer. Their initial target is $15,000. They will play according to the following rules: - All Pokemon must be caught within TheSpeedGamer’s house, no trades will be done to outsiders,
- All pokemon that are only attainable through events only will be pre-loaded onto one of the carts.
- Games being played: Fire Red, Leaf Green, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Pearl.

As it stands, The Speed Gamers are 41 hours into the marathon, and they currently have 301 Pokémon. They have also announced all of their planned marathons for next year: In March, they will have a Metroid marathon. In May, there will be a Mother/Earthbound marathon. Over the summer, they will have a week long Mario marathon, in which they intend to play any and every Mario game they can get their hands on. That includes the 2D and 3D games, the Mario Land games, the RPGs, the sports games, the Mario Party series, and even Luigi's Mansion as well as the edutainment titles (if they find them), etc. (Phil said they were going to 100% Mario Paint.  ) In late summerl, they will have an Assassin's Creed/Prince of Persia marathon. They will have a Castlevania marathon for Halloween. And for next year's holiday marathon, Kingdom Hearts. There's a lot there for Nintendo fans to get interested in. No charities have been announced yet. |
