On the subject of things that slipped through the net, I was surprised the Manneken Pis (that you use to pee out a fire) made it through. I know it's a famous statue, but you're using it to pee on a fire!!  If you include that, are you also going to include Manneken Pis from Animal Crossing? I seem to remember an angry parent writing to Nintendo Power about it and having to explain what it was. I'll have to see if I can find the letter. |

"Geld" (Gerudo) has been used as a name for desert-dwellers since Zelda II (Geldarm) and ALttP (Geldman).

I can actually only think of one thing is Fire Emblem that was seriously censored. In Shadow Dragon, the reference to slave market is completely removed.
Original version:
Chapter 12: Slave Market of Norda
Slave merchant: Do you need a slave? Right now we only have weakling kids for sale, but we can sell them to you for a cheap price.

Okay, I've checked through the issues of Nintendo Power I have, but I couldn't find the letter. Most of my old issues are gone, so if there's anyone else with some back issues laying around, it'd be cool if you could take a look. On a different note, how strict are you on the feature being about NOA censorship, Fryguy? I just found out that Nintendo of Europe censored Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. The pose of Registeel's original sprite was too similar to the Hitler salute for Germany, so they changed the sprite. In Platinum, all regions got the censored sprite. |

Fire Emblem remains one of the least censored series by Nintendo. There are some lines that get changed but the overall suggestions of sexuality and violence and drama remain there.
Just felt like saying this.

Wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't pointed out, but Registeel's pose DOES look like the Hitler Salute.
Of course, so does David Bowie in mid wave.

Oh, I just thought about this. Does anyone else think that the Chuckola Cola from Mario & Luigi might have been actual wine in the Japanese game? I was checking it out on the Mario wiki. In French, it's called Soda Hilaro, but the German version calls it Witzwien which mean "joke wine". Does Germany have a more relaxed attitude towards drinking that the English-speaking world?

I had a quick look into this, as it might well have had some legs... and I knew where to go to find out. TMK's Mario & Luigi from Japanese to English page says that Chuckola is originally called "Gerappa". Now trying to translate this phrase didn't come up with anything - however "Grappa" did. It's a kind of pomace brandy. Could this be the explanation? Another interesting thing to add to the alcohol pile  |

If I remember right, NoE also removed Mario's Hitler salute in Paper Mario 2 when he talks to someone. Yeah, when I saw this pose in a YouTube video showing the American version, it was the first what came to my mind. In this way, I think it would also be interesting to cover the censorship specific to Europe and not just NoA's. |

Coupling those two Hitler poses with Bowser's fist "victory" pose in SMRPG can be slotted into "unintentional poses censored so as not to offend local sensibilities".
And yes, if NoE censors something then it will still go in this list.
PS. Please can somebody supply screenshots of these things?

Word removal.I mentioned this in the "Mysteries and Cool Stuff thread" before, but here's the video that shows that Nintendo removed the word "Damn" and replaced it with the word "No" said by Admiral Dane from MPT's version of MP3C. The rating for the game did not change in anyway due to it's removal. Gambling references.Also NoE had the slot machines from Pokemon Platinum removed and replaced with "game machines" due to implementation of more aggressive and stricter legislation in the European Union towards gambling. Source.Also the dialog have also been changed because of it. Source. The Japanese, NA and Australian versions still have the slot machines. Someone also emailed Nintendo about if there would be slot machines in the upcoming HG/SS remakes, and it looks like they are getting removed as well. Source.Also the person/s in game originally known as "gamblers" are now known as "gamers" And then they were changed to "PI's"(detective type people). Source.

I'm not sure what the deal is with this, because I have the European version, and my Registeel is doing the Hitler salute. Mario still raises his hand with his palm open when he talks to somebody in my European Paper Mario 2, too. Maybe these things were only removed from German versions rather than versions throughout Europe? |
