On a different note, how strict are you on the feature being about NOA censorship, Fryguy? I just found out that Nintendo of Europe censored Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. The pose of Registeel's original sprite was too similar to the Hitler salute for Germany, so they changed the sprite. In Platinum, all regions got the censored sprite. I'm not sure what the deal is with this, because I have the European version, and my Registeel is doing the Hitler salute. Mario still raises his hand with his palm open when he talks to somebody in my European Paper Mario 2, too. Maybe these things were only removed from German versions rather than versions throughout Europe? Bulbapedia says that it excludes the UK and Ireland versions of Diamond and Pearl, so that's the reason. In case of Paper Mario2, I'm actually sure that Mario didn't raise his hand like in the NTSC versions when I played the game. Or maybe it depends on which of the five languages you use? I don't know. |

But... but... surely raising one arm... and the WRONG arm at that... doesn't mean anything at all!
Like I said though, I will need further proof of this one, especially if there are different versions floating about within Europe itself, let alone worldwide.

I created a similar thread. In the category of alcohol, there's the change in Punch-Out!! from Vodka Drunkenski to Soda Popinski. However, check this out. NOA didn't change the guy's name in the Super Punch-Out!! An interesting example of the different attitudes NOA had towards arcade games and home consoles. The Super Punch-Out!! arcade was his debut appearance. Despite being changed from Vodka Drunkenski to Soda Popinski, two of his quotes still sound like alcoholic references. * "I can't drive, so I'm gonna walk all over you!" * "I'm going to make you feel punch drunk!"

Well, all I know is that I've seen him raise his arm like that when talking to NPCs, and I've never watched the game on YouTube or seen anyone other than my girlfriend and I playing it. I never in my wildest dreams would've connected that movement to Hitler, though. I just assumed he was saying hi to the person he was talking to. |

Found another example, but this was probably for the better. In Mario Party 8, the word "spastic" had to be removed from the UK version of the game (and was replaced with "erratic"). Because of the whole offense the UK takes to the word "spastic" ( spastic wikipedia definition). Source and wiki source. |

Source and wiki source.There's so much confusion about this, so let me explain: The word "spastic" means the same in the UK as "retard". It was originally associated with people with disabilities, but then widely taken on as an offensive insult. Someone in the German translation office didn't get this memo, and the words "Dance like a spastic" were included in Mario Party 8. However, the game never hit retail with this part in it. The game was completed, but somebody noted this oversight, and the game was fixed before hitting stores. It was, however, in preview versions, which is why it was widely reported. I presume that it's not in the American version. |

Actually it was "Turn the train spastic".  It is in the American version, from what I've heard. The game was released in the UK with that sentence in it (because my copy has it), but was recalled a week later. I forget what they changed it to afterwards, though. |

It is in all American versions. The reason is the evolution of the word "Spastic" Stateside. Over here, the word came of the same reason, but it never caught on to imply palsy (the disability in question.) What ended up happening was that "spastic" developed a definition akin to "Flailing around like Kermit the frog after hearing a gunshot" as opposed to "Having palsy." In fact, that's the big reason alot of us Yanks heard about it: For the most part, we'd never realised that "Spastic" was any kind of offensive anywhere. Meanwhile, it DID catch on to mean "Having palsy" in Europe, so when used with the American definition at mind, it sounds like a horrible knock against people with palsy, so it became offensive in the same lines that "Retard" did.
A little etymology lesson for ya.

This might be in the same boat with Angel/Cupid Kirby: Blood Falcon's "Blood Hawk" is actually called the Hell Hawk in Japanese. I wonder, has the word "hell" been used in any other English-language version of a Nintendo game besides Hotel Dusk? Also, the Wanwan Roulette in MKWii was changed to the "Chain Chomp Wheel" in the North American version, but in the PAL version, it is properly named the Chain Chomp Roulette. Oh, I just thought about this. Does anyone else think that the Chuckola Cola from Mario & Luigi might have been actual wine in the Japanese game? I was checking it out on the Mario wiki. In French, it's called Soda Hilaro, but the German version calls it Witzwien which mean "joke wine". Does Germany have a more relaxed attitude towards drinking that the English-speaking world? One shouldn't lump the whole English-speaking world together. The poor WiiWare game Beer Pong was released under its actual name in Europe, which includes the UK and Ireland, and got a PEGI rating of 3+ and nobody compained. But in America, there was a controversy about the name and the game's content, so it was renamed Pong Toss and all alcohol references got removed. |

Meh, the work of NinDB will get complicated if it decides to handle all language versions. Japanese, American English, American French, American Spanish, European English, European German, European French, European Italian, European Spanish, Australian English... =P

Don't forget the furore Rare caused over the DK Rap, and the later fan furore that issued when the SSBM version changed it to "Heck of a Guy". |

Yeah I remember when they changed the Gambler. "I'm a rambling gambling dude" became "I'm a rambling gaming dude" which didn't even sound right!
Also I think I remember that the music in the Pokemon Church was removed in the Western versions for sounding too "holy".
