Super Mario Galaxy didn't really advance the gameplay. The differences from the earlier games are actually very subtle but add up to what appears to be a huge evolution.
The whole running around mini-planets thing opened up the potential for some crazy gravity puzzles. There was a less strict requirement for each stage to have the same number of Power Stars, which meant more levels, some small and some huge, some freeform and some very linear. Some went into 2D, while others were 3D. Essentially, it blended together everything a Mario game should be into one place.
All I want from this game is for it to be great. And ideally in such a way that I don't throw up while playing it. Good ol' 3DS.

That's why I'm thinking it could be hard... to make it great. (-ll_) I've seen Galaxy, and kinda ignored few sport spinoffs. So how THIS one's gonna be great? Miyamoto though said something about that this game would a mix of Mario 64 and Galaxy, with little bit of NSMB. Maybe that gives us a hint. 64 + Galaxy + NSMB = SM3DS (?)I think... I see it now. *slaps this thread awake*
Seriously? Nothing yet? Let me get some facts out of the way then: - the Tanooki Suit don't make you fly no more, just slow your decent - Boom-Boom Koopas from SMB3 [finally] returns - first time the Flag Pole to indicate the end of a level is used in a 3D Mario game - Mario has a new Rolling ability, seen when he rolls into the cardboard Goombas (Paper Goombas?)
So yeah, time for some fan wank, Next new suit: The Hedgehog Suit. Hilarity ensues.

I'm going to be surprised if the Frog suit doesn't return, honestly.
Also, something from Mario and Luigi bleeds into the main titles with the Tanoomba. It'd be intersting to see a list of things that started in spinoffs and made it into main titles.

Yep. It's not unheard of, it's just kinda rare. The Ice Flower might be the most prominent bleedthrough since DK's tie.

Sigh this game's environments are even more constricted, fabricated, and basic than Mario Galaxy's. But that's okay since its a handheld. I just hope to god the next Mario console game will feature fully explorable rich fantasy worlds.
I guess what I want is Mario to go back to sandbox gameplay in very large explorable environments. Maybe this is why for a while I was in love with the Banjo-Kazooie series.

I'm going to be surprised if the Frog suit doesn't return, honestly. Kinda unrelated, but I spotted the Frog Suit in the Paper Mario 3DS artwork. It's coming back in some form!

Yeah, we've known that for a while. It's an attack sticker. We've seen it in action, and it increases Mario's jump or something. The artwork makes it look exactly like the Frog Suit pickup though.

Me, too! I need to get a 3DS, too... all these new 3DS games we saw at E3 2011... it is more than enough to make me want a 3DS! Also, Tanooki Mario FTW! That was my favorite power-up in Super Mario Bros. 3! ;D Hope he can still turn into a statue in this game.
