It's not an assumption. He can't. If he could, we'd have seen it already. He also can't fly either. All he can do is whack stuff with his tail and hover.

He becomes Tanooki Mario with a Super Leaf instead of a Tanooki Suit. That's enough for me to not expect such a detail as the statue form. But who knows  |

My, this ranking list must be pretty new... I'm not especially good with this game, and some of my "records" are made without speedrunning in mind. TMK's list has quite a few scores that are obviously made outside of a speedrun attempt.
I'll send photographic proofs if I remember tomorrow. Right now my 3DS is out of battery.
