Siliconera has a report that the Space Pirates from Metroid are also in Kid Icarus Uprising - I'll pass along the link and let you make that decision, Fry.

No, the name is the same, which is interesting, but they're not the ones from Metroid at all.

I can't really say they don't look like them when Space Pirates never really had a consistent look about them. However, they could have been inspired by them (seeing as how the different colored ones have different abilities like the pirates in Prime.)
And even if they aren't, the name could have been changed to Space Pirates (they're called Star Pirates in japan, no real reason to change them) as a sort of dub induced reference.

I didn't really see the resemblance either, but hey, it's a cameo claim, so why not pass it along? If anything they remind me of the Prime models of the Pirates...which would be interesting if that were true, given how the Prime series is usually brushed under the rug in Japan.

Don't know if it counts but the "bow" weapon icon (seen below) is the same as Pit's emblem from SSBB.

Here are some lines from the game that reference Metroid and Brain Age. Pit: "You know, these Komaytoes sure look a lot like Metroids" Viridi: "Don't say that! That game universe has nothing to do with this gaming universe!" "Wait a minute! Your math is a little off there. You better break out Brain Training" "My brain age is 24!" Not really sure if this counts but the main menu for the game looks a lot like Brawl's, And here is Brawl's menu for comparison. The colors for the solo and group modes are backwards but everything else in terms of colors is spot on. (with Data replaced with StreetPass.)

It's also similar to Meteos, another game by Sakurai I don't think this counts as a reference as much as his personal style. The main menu of Kirby Air Ride was also similar I believe (each mode's specific menu looked like Melee's however)

Let's just say Sakurai likes big, bright buttons and put it down to his developer tastes rather than cameos

Apparently, when you fight Twinbellows the second time, Pit says, "I'll take you for a walk, and we'll get so many Nintendogs trainer points!"

Let's just say Sakurai likes big, bright buttons and put it down to his developer tastes rather than cameos Ah well. Now for an actual cameo! The ground combat tutorial mentions Super smash bros. Not as major as the other one but one of the loading screen tips actually says the komayto look similar to Metroids.

A late game cameo, don't read this if you haven't beaten chapter 9.
Chapter 19 Highlight to Read Pit is climbing the chariot masters tower, and he enters a room with ramps and rolling boulders Pit: "This seems familiar..." Hades: "I guess the Chariot Master has played Donkey Kong."
Chapter 21 While fighting waves of enemies Pit says. Pit: This guy is doing his best Game & Watch impression.

Not too sure if if this counts as a cameo, but the in game multilayer tutorial video, (at 55 seconds in this YT video) shows that one of the player names (Pit) is "Treehaus" which is probably a reference to NoA localisation team Treehouse. Also on the KI:U website, a multiplayer image shows off another 2 players named Toad and PKFIRE. (This one probably shouldn't count, unless the names appear in a tutorial video in game, but since the player named "Treehaus" does appear in some of the multiplayer images on the official website, I thought the other two names could possibly appear in an in game video). And in talking about "Sakarai menu screen style", a better term I heard online to describe them is they are "touchable" (something that works well for a touchscreen device, even though SSBB doesn't use a touch screen or the Wii Pointer).

Actually, computer controlled players in the multiplayer take on a multitude of Nintendo themed names like Resetti, Zelda, Mario, Link, Samus, Bowser, Kirby
Those are all the ones I know. We should compile a list.

Don't have a source, but the description for the Komayto is "The last Komayto is not in captivity and Skyland is not at peace".
