What exactly gives you that "strong feeling"? We don't even know what the hell they do in Kid Icarus Uprising yet!

Does it even matter what they could do in Uprising? Look at Captain Falcon... Zelda... Sheik... R.O.B., especially R.O.B.
Fans generally want more female characters in Smash... but most female characters they are asking for... are not important (Mona, Ashley, Jody Summer) or are obscure (Captain Syrup, Lip, Jill from Drill Dozer) or are overshadowed by male leads (Lyn, Micaiah, Caeda)... that leaves us with... Palutena, Medusa, Dixie Kong, and maybe Krystal.
They are actually important in their series... and they are not going to be obscure any longer thanks to Uprising... and since they are prominent, they are not easily overshadowed by Pit, since they are the Peach/Zelda and Bowser/Ganon of the Kid Icarus series. And well... they certainly have Sakurai's attention because he worked on Uprising so I am pretty sure he has some idea what the goddesses could do if he wanted to make up moves that suit them in Smash.

Sounds to me like your "strong feeling" is you wanting them in.

Call it whatever you want.... but it is logically sound whether you want them or not.

I'm gonna have to roll with Dino here. You have some good points, admittedly, but you have no idea how this is gonna work out for Palutena and/or Medusa. For all we know, Palutena/Medusa won't be of any validity whatsoever, physical structure notwithstanding. I have fun with shouting "EGGPLANT WIZARD FOR SMASH," but realistically, it's not likely, and similar logic applies here. Palutena doesn't seem to be Smash-capable at all right now, and we have no idea how Smash-capable Medusa's gonna be in Uprising. She could very well end up being the enormous head you fought in the original. Not really valid there. Yeah, they're important, and yes, they have uteri, and no, they aren't obscure. But we have absolutely NO idea what they'll be able to do right now. I'll reserve actual judgment on anything until the game is out, but right now, answer's "Unlikely."

Uprising might give us a better look at the possible status of Palutena and Medusa, considering Masahiro Sakurai designed Uprising. Had it been another designer, the Kid Icarus stuff in Smash 4 could turn less predictable.
I think the game should only get 1 more Kid Icarus character, but yeah, it's Sakurai in both games.
And Arcadenik, I'm sure you'll hate people saying "Palutena is already in the Final Smash of Pit" for 2 or 3 years ahead, but start facing it; things haven't changed with Peach's neutral special between Melee and Brawl xP

Personally, I think Magnus deserves more attention. Sure, we know nothing of him, but KI: Uprising could form him into a fan favorite and even give him a viable moveset. Either way, it completely depends on how he works out in Uprising, same for Palutena and Medusa. I just hope Pit cracks more jokes in SSB4 Or hell, use Dark Pit's voice actor for a Dark Pit texture, but that's a bit of a stretch, seeing as how lazy the texture swaps are in SSBB. But I've got a strong feeling Pit's moveset will be modified thanks to Uprising. Similar to how Link got a Gale Boomerang in SSBB. And as for something personal, I hope Mario gets to use his Cape for Gliding. We all know Mario's recovery is pretty bad, and only 3 character can glide in SSBB, so I'd like to see more use of that mechanic. As for something personal, I'd like to see more villains. Some that come to mind are Ghirahim, Ridley, Dark Samus, King K. Rool, Bowser Jr., and Claus. Sure, I'm not saying any of them are possible or not, I'm just stating a list of villains off the top of my head. As for female characters, I'd say Dixie, but only if she's made relevant ASAP, like in a Donkey Kong Country Returns Again or something. Either way, I say we await the next 2 years of games to make real predictions. For now, all we can do is fanwank. Oh, and Gordon Freeman. Alien guns and Crowbars for everyone, Sure bet, no doubt! /jk

Does every franchise in Smash really need a secondary and villian character (along with the main) in the game?

No... unless you want Smash 4 to cut Bowser, Peach, Luigi, Zelda, Sheik, Ganondorf, Toon Link, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario, Jigglypuff... but not all franchises need a second character... for example, Ice Climber, Robot, Game & Watch, Pikmin... but it is nice to have more characters from Nintendo's bigger and more popular franchises.

1) I honestly think the next game needs a massive roster shake-up.
2) If left to me (and I think Fry agrees with me on this) I'd have established a "rule" early on stating that only one playable character would be allowed for each "world symbol". Boss characters would be non-playable bosses and secondary characters would be NPCs or Assists of some sort. Not only would this shrink the roster and allow for better balance, but it also force people and Sakurai's team alike to think harder about who to add instead of just putting in 40,000 Mario characters or being forced to add one villain and one girl for every series already repped.

That's retarded. We need villains. Bowser and Ganondorf were MADE to fight Mario and Link (even IF the Ganondorf we play as has a ton of made up moves that make no sense). And who ever asked for a smaller roster? If anything, fans want a BIGGER roster. More characters=more fun.

Sorry to bash, but it's true. I'm not saying "Add Waluigi! And Toad! Oh, and let's not forget Geno!" because they aren't as important as, say Bowser Jr., who I still don't think has a huge chance to make it into the next Smash. As Teev said, Villains are a necessity because they are the yang to the hero's yin, and so are important females like Peach and Zelda/Sheik (didn't include Samus because she's her series' main character anyway) since they too are key characters. You say Mario's series has 1 bajillion characters in SSB, but you fail to realize that characters like Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Wario have stemmed away from the Mainstream Mario is and made their own legacy. Same goes for Link/Toon Link and Ness/Lucas. Some characters must leave due to irrelevance (Dr. Mario, Roy and Young Link) and some must join due to recently obtained fame (Toon Link and Lucario), and some are even introduced to revive old times and maybe even shed new light on said characters, Pit being the best example. Fire Emblem was Japan-only when Melee came out, but it's quite popular now that it's out of Japan, thanks to SSB Melee and Brawl, but having just Marth wouldn't do justice to the recent events of the series and leaving out Marth would ignore the origins.

FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, wasn't expecting the replies
Let me rephrase the question. (which I still think is difficult to ask)
Do franchises with a smaller popularity niche/more obscure/less spotlight or less games in there respective series (over the years) need loads of playable characters for SSB?
Eg: Kid Icarus will only have 3 games by the time Smash 4 releases, does it really need 3 characters (eg Pit, "secondary character" and villain/Medusa)
Also should we even worry about what characters are going to be in Smash 4 when we don't even know what the game will actually be (it could completely change genre or something like into some sort of action card battle or how about a Nintendo themed DoTA* like game (Multilayer Online Battle Arena / Action Real Time Strategy or it could even be a completely new game genre) ).
* Dota has like 104 different playable characters, with more on the way.

I still think the obvious choices were stupidly left out. I doubt anybody out there is desperately wanting to play as their Mii, but...why couldn't we play as our Mii's? Missed opportunity that is bound to be fixed. And we got an Animal Crossing stage but no fighter? Even though the game has a TON of weapons at the main character's disposal (including the Master Sword). Ridley would be cool, don't get me wrong...but he does fit better as a boss. And NO MORE ORIGINAL ENEMIES/BOSSES! Nintendo is RIPE with mooks and giant mooks. Hell, Rayquaza proved that any of the 600+ Pokemon can be awesome boss material. I want to see a single player with Goomba's, Waddle Dee's, Octoroks, and Metroid's. I want to stomp on the heads of dirty hippy's when I visit Fourside. The Smash Bros. series is a potential powder keg and Sakurai keeps cutting the fuse after it's already been lit. EDIT: FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, wasn't expecting the replies Let me rephrase the question. Eg: Kid Icarus will only have 3 games by the time Smash 4 releases, does it really need 3 characters (eg Pit, "secondary character" and villain/Medusa) No. One Kid Icarus character is fine. Unless his villain proves to be memorable, Pit's all we need from that franchise. Personally, I think the same should be said for Star Fox. So many characters...and they all have the SAME FREAKING MOVES. There was so much creativity that could've been used to establish a new character trademark. Captain Falcon was nothing before Sakurai gave him the Falcon Punch, now his entire character is based off the one Sakurai created. So why couldn't he do that for Falco? I mean...Falco is a freaking bird. Why didn't he use his beak? Why couldn't he fly (or at least glide)? Wolf is justified being...foxes and wolves aren't very different appearance-wise. But he's a brawler. He's also Fox's rival so why do they have the same attacks? Was there a Star Fox dojo that welcomed everybody who wanted to do a flaming air kick? [/rant]

Smash isn't a Nintendo Congress. Star Fox had 2 games and 2 characters at the time Melee came out. Mother has 3 games and 2 characters in Brawl.
Star Fox and F-Zero characters rarely get out of their vehicles... of course they are going to get made-up movesets. I think that explains why Star Fox characters have the same moves... and why we only have one F-Zero character. It is probably hard to make up moves for characters who rarely fight, especially for several characters from the same franchise. If that were the case, I can see why Sakurai prefers making up movesets for several characters from several franchises. Oh well, at least Falco jumps very high compared to Fox and Wolf... haha...
I think Starfy might be playable in Smash 4... I noticed that Starly's trophy is in the Figher Related category. Starfy is the only franchise without a playable character with a trophy in the Fighter Related category... isn't that strange? To me, it implies that Starfy may have been planned to be playable in Brawl at one point. It would explain why Starfy is the only Assist Trophy we can hit.
