Star Fox and F-Zero characters rarely get out of their vehicles... of course they are going to get made-up movesets. I think that explains why Star Fox characters have the same moves... and why we only have one F-Zero character. It is probably hard to make up moves for characters who rarely fight, especially for several characters from the same franchise. If that were the case, I can see why Sakurai prefers making up movesets for several characters from several franchises. Oh well, at least Falco jumps very high compared to Fox and Wolf... haha... Thing is, Star Fox does have at least some level of attack diversity for when they do leave, at least enough for Fox, Falco, and Wolf. When Brawl was released, one of the most recently released Star Fox games was Star Fox Assault, a mostly land-based game where most of the fighting was with guns (though admittedly sparse, giving us the blaster, machine gun, grenades, homing launcher, and sniper rifle, plus upgrades.) For 3 characters, that's quite enough to make distinct movesets. Not to mention LANDMASTAH!

People also seem to forget that damn near every F-ZERO character actually has some sort of job outside of being a race driver. Goroh is a samurai gang leader, Jody Summer is a police officier, etc. It shouldn't be that hard to theme movesets around these occupations. Hell, this is part of why I want a standalone F-ZERO fighting game.

That's retarded. We need villains. Bowser and Ganondorf were MADE to fight Mario and Link (even IF the Ganondorf we play as has a ton of made up moves that make no sense). And who ever asked for a smaller roster? If anything, fans want a BIGGER roster. More characters=more fun. First of all, don't cop an attitude with me. Second, just because the fans ASK for it doesn't mean it's a GOOD thing. I just SAID why a smaller roster would be a beneficial thing. I'm not going to say it again.

Sorry to bash, but it's true. I'm not saying "Add Waluigi! And Toad! Oh, and let's not forget Geno!" because they aren't as important as, say Bowser Jr., who I still don't think has a huge chance to make it into the next Smash. As Teev said, Villains are a necessity because they are the yang to the hero's yin, and so are important females like Peach and Zelda/Sheik (didn't include Samus because she's her series' main character anyway) since they too are key characters. You say Mario's series has 1 bajillion characters in SSB, but you fail to realize that characters like Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Wario have stemmed away from the Mainstream Mario is and made their own legacy. Same goes for Link/Toon Link and Ness/Lucas. Some characters must leave due to irrelevance (Dr. Mario, Roy and Young Link) and some must join due to recently obtained fame (Toon Link and Lucario), and some are even introduced to revive old times and maybe even shed new light on said characters, Pit being the best example. Fire Emblem was Japan-only when Melee came out, but it's quite popular now that it's out of Japan, thanks to SSB Melee and Brawl, but having just Marth wouldn't do justice to the recent events of the series and leaving out Marth would ignore the origins. What makes you think I don't realize DK and Wario have their own series? Tell that to the rest of the world who seem to still think DK is just another Mario character. More over I really don't get the rest of your argument. Mario represents the Mario series, Marth represents the Fire Emblem series. Ness represents the Earthbound/MOTHER series. What more does one need than that? Anything else from their respective series can be incorporated in other ways. Also, who the hell are you to call me "selfish" over a mere suggestion?

See, the thing is...you've got an attitude, like all the time. Smash Bros. is Fanservice: The Game. Why else do we have Mario and Link fighting Sonic and Snake? Or even back on the N64, we had Captain Falcon treating Jigglypuff as his own personal punching bag. Way I see it, what the fans want, fans get. Sure, there has been a group of people who legitimately play for sport...but they're called "tourneyfags" for a reason.

Well, I was going to continue debating here (as debates are a necessity in society), but this one took a turn for the worse. All I'll say is that I mentioned Wario and DK because I have to speak to everyone, not just yourself, and that having just Mario and not include Bowser, for example, wouldn't do justice to Bowser, who's just as important as Mario.

BUMP! Saw this on NeoGAF.Translated from 2002 Famitsu (concerning Melee) character selection. - It was decided early on to separate the newcomers into two even groups for balance reasons: fan favorites (as determined by a survey) and unique, unexpected characters.
- Bowser, Peach, Mewtwo, and Marth were culled from the fan survey.
- Zelda, Sheik, Ice Climbers, and Mr. Game & Watch made up the other group.
- Just in case Sakurai couldn't get approval to use Marth from Intelligent Systems, he had some King Dedede concepts ready as a backup.
- Wario placed third in the poll, but with Bowser and Peach pencilled in, Sakurai didn't want to include 3 Mario newcomers.
- Sakurai considered adding a character from Pokémon Gold/Silver during planning, but none of the popular options were feasible.
- He thought about having a trainer summon the second generation starters, but there wasn't time/resources for such a labor-intensive character.
- Pichu was promoted as the main Pokémon from those games, but it would have been too similar to Pikachu, so Sakurai passed on it.
- Thinking back to Pichu is partly what made Sakurai want to include clones.
- Clones were not included in Melee's planning documents.
- Sakurai had a hard time deciding on all of the clones, though some choices came easy like Pichu and Young Link.
- Sakurai says that he probably could have finished Dedede in the time it took to make the 6 clones, but he's glad he was able to beef the roster up a bit.
- Wario was briefly considered as the Mario clone, with low speed and high attack power, but Sakurai felt that Wario deserved better.
- Dr. Mario made sense for a few reasons: he's from a critically-acclaimed retro game, the team wanted to include his music, and because a doctor would probably be on hand at an event as violent as Smash Bros.
- Wolf was considered as Fox's clone, but with shared animations Sakurai felt he would just be perceived as a gray-colored Fox, so he went with Falco for his drastically different appearance and excellent jumping capabilities.
- Leaf was considered as Marth's clone, but when Sakurai went to Intelligent Systems for approval they gave him an early look at the GBA Fire Emblem, and he agreed that Roy would be a better fit. Sakurai mentions his fire properties as making him stand out.
- Ganondorf was the last character added to the game. He was only included because he was popular, had a similar body type to Captain Falcon, and because Sakurai couldn't really think of any additional plausible clones.

It would explain why Starfy is the only Assist Trophy we can hit. I'm pretty sure you hit the Lakitu AT. Anyway, I'd want to see K.Rool in SSB4, given that he's the 'Bowser' of the DKC series (assumingthe DK series gets another rep)..

I would have preferred Pokemon Trainer Gold with 2nd gen starters instead of Pichu in Melee. :/

Hell no Pichu owns. I legit want him to return in SSB4 and be even more of a useless Dan Hibiki.
