Just a random question that popped into my head earlier today which I thought I'd ask on here... In regards to the new characters who'll appear in the next game, who is/are your 'sure fire bet(s)' (as in characters who you're almost certain will appear) and who is/are your 'outsider(s)' (as in characters who arguably have low odds of appearing yet you have a feeling could still appear).
My sure fire:
Little Mac. With the release of Punch Out Wii bringing the series back and with the game being very popular I'd say Little Mac is almost certain to appear. Also with him being the main character from Nintendo's other main fighting series he's an obvious choice.
My outsider:
Takamuru. Seems to be a fairly popular request amongst fans (ninjas being cool and all). Him and his game has also returned to some prominence recently with references being made to Murasame in Brawl, an appearance in Captain Rainbow and a entire mode based on his game appears in Samurai Warriors 3.

As far as surefire newcomers go, I don't think there are any, except perhaps the Mii. Even Little Mac isn't a sure thing. I can think of a dozen outside suggestions easily. They're mostly the same ones we suggested before the full Melee roster was known, and then a few additions for Brawl

Animal Crosser was a popular choice before Brawl was released. His moveset would work perfectly (axe, shovel, and bug catching net for attack, fishing pole for recovery). Isaac was also speculated to appear due the the growing popularity of Golden Sun and the third game released recently. Others from the poll that never made it in would also be Geno, Ridley, Krystal, Takamaru, etc.

In that case, I think it is high time they started adding protagonists from Nintendo's minor franchises that had at least one new game since Brawl came out (2008) in addition to Nintendo's supporting characters (sidekicks, villains) from Nintendo's major franchises. I am also hoping that we may get about 20 newcomers this time. We had 14 newcomers in Melee and 18 newcomers in Brawl. I do think the following might be considered reasonable picks:
Toad, Dixie Kong, King K. Rool, Ridley, Snivy/Pignite/Samurott (new Pokemon Trainer), Zoroark, Mewtwo, new Lord from Fire Emblem 3DS, Palutena, Medusa, Tingle (reps his own franchise), Little Mac, Mii, Takamaru, Matthew (Golden Sun series), Isa Jo (Sin & Punishment series), Mega Man, Slime (Dragon Quest series)

Sure fire... eh, I don't think there are any for now, kind of depends what goes on for the next few years. If F-Zero gets a new game, Samurai Goroh or some newcomer might be included. If KI: Uprising does well and Magnus gets enough fame, he might make it. If Fire Emblem (3DS) does well, the new lord/main character might make it (or even replace Ike), Et Cetera, Ad Infinitum.
And as for Outsider (according to your definition), I'd have to say Antony Higgs. While he is the only major-ish character in Metroid outside of Samus, Adam and the horde of villains, and he could be given a moveset, by either using his Other M weapons (Ice pistol, his personal lazer cannon) and/or some invented moves (jetpack, military martial arts), he's from Other M, possibly the most loathed Metroid game, and that severely hurt his chances (In my opinion).
On the topic of Takamaru... isn't he getting a 3DS game with a very distinct art style? I saw something that resembled Takamaru last month on GoNintendo... if so, that could also mean higher chance of Takamaru in SSB4.

@ Shadrio
I saw that one, too! Was it ever confirmed that that Nimble Sakura Warrior game is really Takamaru's new game (prequel, sequel, retelling)? If it is, then Takamaru's odds just went up because I remember Sakurai saying something about if Takamaru got a new game, he would get in Smash.

I don't believe it's confirmed that it's Takamaru, and the title of the game suggests it isn't a sequel, but who knows - it may turn out to be after all!
I think there's some cycling characters now, particularly Pokémon and Fire Emblem characters, so some newcomers there seem a good bet, but in place of others.
Also, if Sonic and Snake don't get in for whatever reason, Higgs could potentially replace Snake's moveset. Not sure who could replace Sonic...

Not sure who could replace Sonic... That armadillo from that rolling western game. But Sonic is definitely not going. Hopefully Snake doesn't either.

Oh, and if the Mii were to make it into SSB4, I'd say it would take moves from the Wii/Mii series, like Wii Sport Resort, Wii Music or Find Mii instead of making the Mii a customizable character. It would represent the series way more.
There's also the topic of existing character getting new moves. I betcha that Pit's getting either a few moves completely changed or even a full revamp (much less likely, but still possible).
And here's to Mario actually using his cape like he does in Super Mario World: to Glide. His Recovery is terribly mediocre, gliding would help ;D

Bit of a hard bite. I don't think any of my chars are a "sure bet": Toad seems to be not much recognise more as a special move for Peach, Starfy got very undeserving representation in Brawl and Lip seems unlikely and unrevelant for many people.
(-l_l-);;;;
But okay, I think Starfy's my sure bet, and Lip's the outsider character.

Sadly, SSB4 has no shoe-ins. But for the character I think is the most likely that I support would be Ridley.
An outsider that I would love to see that could still appear would be Ray from Custom Robo. Kind of unlikely, but would be nice to have.
In between those two is my most supported character for SSB4; which is Victini.

He can roll out, though I don't think he'd be that aerial. He'd be awesome, though not a full clone

He can roll out, though I don't think he'd be that aerial. He'd be awesome, though not a full clone No, but I can see it basically working. Much of Sonic's non-rolling fighting style is duplicable by any humanoid, so a rolling character with a humanoid shape could effectively mimic him. The only valid concern is that Sonic is very fast and, as you said, is very aerially-oriented. What would likely result is a less extreme version of the Ganondorf / Cpn. Falcon difference, with one who's stupidly fast and one who's too slow. What I was really getting at, though, is that the third party characters don't really need to be replaced. It's a fun idea, but at the end of the day, it's not necessary. I mean, look at Mewtwo.

Dillon would be pretty interesting... There are other characters I want more than Dillon... I am pretty much neutral towards Dillon.
I have a strong feeling we might see Palutena and Medusa added into the Smash 4 roster.
