So that was interesting an Direct. - Luigi's Mansion 3 (after being teased with the Simon Belmont Smash trailer). - Nothing really new about Switch online. - NES/Famicom Joy Con. - Fuckloads of ports including various Final Fantasy games, and a bunch that got spoiled over the past week. - The rather muted, Isabelle in Smash trailer. Really didn't feel as exciting as previous Smash trailers. - The surprising transition into Tom Nook announcing AC Switch for 2019.

That was quite a lot of Final Fantasy. It's almost as if Square Enix was caught off-guard by the runaway success of Octopath Traveler, and said, "Quick! Let's get as many RPGs on the Switch we can!"
Of all of them, tho, I'm still most interested in Crystal Chronicles. I am kinda interested in FF12, too. But I think FF7 is about 20 years too late for me. (I know it'll likely be digital-only, but man, the irony of that game showing up on a cartridge-based Nintendo console.)
All in all, it was a very good Direct. I think maybe better than their E3 presentation.

Hey guys, I'm still here! It's just that there hasn't been much to talk about lately. There has been a notable lack of significant Nintendo news as of late, thus the silence. Anyway, here are my general thoughts: (As usual, this is based on the Japanese presentation.) Luigi's Mansion 3 | Huh? What is this? Is Luigi's Mansion 1 going to feature LM2-style graphics this time? And it's in HD, so they're pulling a Sushi Striker again… Wait, new game!? YESSSSSS!!! This is easily my favourite part of the whole presentation. | Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn | Kirby's Epic Yarn is already the easiest platformer. No need to give Kirby even more power. Also, there are no new original (non-port) 3DS games. The 3DS really has run its course. | Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey | Junior gets his own RPG. Cool. | Mobile Ball | A Rocket League style game (I think) with crossplay support with phones. Download only. | Luigi's Mansion | Not much is changed from the original, but it has amiibo support now. It also has two-player support, so that Luigi and… that green blob thing… can explore together. | Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth | The last major third party 3DS game, to be released soon. I've played none of the ATLUS games and I'm still not interested, so there's not much to say here. | Splatoon 2 version 4 | Not a Splatoon fan (like the worldbuilding, but I don't play online games), so there isn't much to say. I do like the way they made the Splatoon language look vaguely like something we should be able to read. | GO VACATION | Looks interesting. Not my kind of thing… I think. | Mega Man 11 | Yeah, I'm going to get this. I need no more persuasion. | Mario Tennis Aces version 2 | Updates will continue until next June. Good to hear. Still not interested, though. | Billion Road | Is this the smell of heated rivalry between BANDAI NAMCO and Konami I sense? Without knowing the details, this looks like a blatant clone of Momotaro Dentetsu to me. | CAPCOM BEAT 'EM UP BUNDLE | CAPCOM's answer to SNK games being on Switch? | New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe | No comments. This probably means there won't be an original 2D Mario, but who wants to have yet another New SMB? | Katamari Damacy REROLL | I certianly didn't expect this game getting a remake. | Download software lineup | Meh. | Assassin's Creed Odyssey Cloud Version | Seriously, are cloud-based action games a good idea? | Nintendo Switch Online | So no actual new announcements, but we see more of the NES lineup. The NES controllers are the weirdest thing I've seen, but it's interesting regardless. Also, nice animation. The mapping of SELECT (− and SL), START (− and SR) and the system menu (− and ZL) is rather strange. | Pokémon Let's Go! Pikachu / Let's Go! Eevee | No actual news. | Diablo III: Eternal Edition | I'm actually kind of interested. There's a playable Ganondorf too. | Super Mario Party | 80 completely new minigames. I take it to mean that these aren't copies of the minigames from previous Mario Party entries. I was disinterested at first, because the E3 trailer put so much emphasis on the ability to connect multiple Switch systems (I know other Switch owners, but it's unlikely they'll have Mario Party), but I'm a bit more interested now. | TOWN | Not interested, both because of the graphics style and because it's a download-only title. | Cities: Skylines | No comments. City development simulators aren't my thing. | DAEMON X MACHINA | Not my thing. The background story is darker than I thought. | Yoshi's Crafted World | It looks inviting. I wonder if it'll end up pleasing neither 2D fans nor 3D fans with this kinda-like-being-3D style, though. I'm not particularly interested in this right now, but maybe I'll change my mind. | Various FINAL FANTASY news | Under a single unassuming title, they dropped multiple bombs. FFCC Remastered Edition, the mobile version of FFXV, WORLD OF FINAL FANTASY, Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon, FFXII: The Zodiac Age, FFVII (with unchanged graphics, but still), FFIX, FFX/X-2 HD Remaster are all coming to Switch. The way the Direct presented it isn't doing it enough justice. | Nintendo Switch — Super Smash Bros. Ultimate set | Looks rather underwhelming to me, actually. | Isabelle | Excuse me while I'm off to see Internet debates on why a is new fighter sharing some of the Villager's moves not considered an echo fighter. (Seriously, why do people debate over this?) | Animal Crossing | This is long overdue. I thought they should have released this year, but data show that the Switch is indeed attracting new players despite the lack of traditional game news. I guess a 2019 release does make sense, after all. |
A typical "great, but it's not for me" Nintendo Direct. And I'm so glad to see Luigi's Mansion getting a third entry. I'm also glad they spent the majority of the time talking about actual new Switch games.

I liked the way they revealed all the Final Fantasy games, with kind of a slow buildup to a crescendo. It started somewhat unassuming, with Crystal Chronicles Remastered, XV Pocket Edition, Worlds Maxima, and Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon. OK... so Final Fantasy is on Switch, but in kind of an honorary way. None of the recent main games are here. (FF15: Cute Mobile Edition doesn't count.) Then, suddenly XII: The Zodiac Age appears. Whoa! An actual main, post-FF6 game is coming to a Nintendo console! That's kind of a big deal! Then the narrator abruptly changes tone. VII appears, followed by footage of IX and X & X-II HD. I'm left speechless. It's finally happened. (Even if VIII was conspicuously absent.) The reaction at the Nintendo World Store in New York sums it up well. You can almost hear the gasp when VII appears. ...And then the whole thing is overshadowed by Smash.

Well, I love everything announced in it. If you haven't watched it yet: Especially playable Piranha Plant.

Welp, that was an enjoyable direct, though I will say that all the deconfirms hurt, like Shadow and Isaac. Seeing people's reaction to both of them have been hilarious, though. Can't wait for the release, I gotta update my tier list... Piranha Plant reminds me of how I gave Shrikeswind flak for "Diglett, but in a pot" back on the SBO forums.

Piranha Plant is so stupid, it wraps around to becoming amazing.
The real MVP's for me was the new Assist Trophies. Having characters like Vince from Art Academy and Yuri from Fatal Frame is just wonderful. Spirits is also pretty great, god damn ST Falcon in Smash.

I was thrilled to learn that Yuri Kozukata is an assist trophy. I've been re-playing Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water recently, and it's great to see Nintendo acknowledge it. (Switch port confirmed? )

Is anyone else wondering why they picked Guile as the AT for Street Fighter over Chun-li? Seems like a strange decision to me.

Good question. Maybe it plays Guile's theme whenever he appears, and as we know, Guile's theme goes with everything.

I think it's because of the memetic nature of competitive Guiles. The way he's introduced is an explicit nod to the annoying turtling strategy that's been around since SFII.
Nester, you're far from the only one happy about Fatal Frame representation. That made me very happy.

Nintendo Direct coming, 35 minutes, Fire Emblem and other stuff.
Why does it have to air when I'm sleeping?
