Interesting find on the NoA Twitter thing. I forgot about that one.
We're already seeing the dangers of relying on external companies for Smash contents in other ways. A bunch of Melee trophies are from games Nintendo could no longer secure rights to (not that it matters, Melee trophies were never reused), and we lost access to all Custom Robo contents in Smash 3DS/Wii U (exact reason unknown, but I suspect it's licensing).
Don't know about Konami's case. Wasn't Snake never planned to appear in the last Smash to begin with?

Microsoft bought Mojang with the intent on releasing Minecraft on every possible device, which is massively different from Banjo and Halo which they keep to their own eco-system. Frankly I don't think it would be appropriate for first party Microsoft characters to appear in Nintendo's flagship fighting game. Maybe, but again, there is precedent, at least for Banjo-Kazooie. There were post-buyout BK series games on Nintendo platforms, remember. Grunty's Revenge and Banjo Pilot do still exist. It would very much be inappropriate to see Halo content, but BK is a much more liminal case here. Side-note, it's vexing that the Banjo-Kazooie series is still 80% composed of Nintendo-only releases. Makes it hard to let it go almost 20 years later.

Banjo Pilot is over 10 years old and was published by THQ instead of Microsoft. There is very little chance that Microsoft will publish games outside of Minecraft on the Switch or 3DS. If you want to play as Banjo in a fighting game, petition Microsoft to add him into Killer Instinct.

I'm just saying, the fact that these games exist shows that there is precedent for Banjo-Kazooie content on Nintendo consoles post-buyout. It's not something that's phenomenally likely - I have acknowledged this fact before - but between that and the fact that Nintendo and Microsoft are at least open to crossplay in another franchise indicates that it's at least possible. Put it this way, I would be delightfully surprised to see Banjo-Kazooie in Smash Ultimate, it would be a huge reveal, and it would be pushing very hard at the borders, but it would not be the logical next step to add content from other Microsoft franchises or from Sony franchises or from outside of gaming or what-have-you. And I would not be upset to not see them, because I do recognize that precedent does not equal plausibility.

Don't know about Konami's case. Wasn't Snake never planned to appear in the last Smash to begin with? I'm not sure. I don't recall seeing anything ever mentioned about Snake's absence, with fan speculation filling the void. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if he were never planned to reappear, given the personal reason he was added in the first place. At the same time, though, Smash 4 did come out when Konami was crumbling in terms of finances and interpersonal politics...

This is an unfortunate first, the Direct has been delayed.
It seems strange that a pre-recorded presentation would get cancelled (and the usual eShop updates of new Direct content happening afterwards), there have been theories put out that maybe something earthquake/disaster related would have appeared in the Direct (Isaac reveal?)

I think it's just out of respect. Victims probably aren't too interested in learning about new Nintendo games at this point.

Some people are speculating that a Switch version of Disaster Report 4 was going to be announced, and obviously that wouldn't be appropriate timing.

Ditto with people speculating that Isaac from Golden Sun was going to be revealed for Smash.
Joe Merrick- the guy from Serebii- has pointed out that Nintendo very rarely delays announcements even for natural disasters unless it echoes that disaster, the classic example being the Whishcash episode of Pokemon.

Direct is back on, same time of day as previous, just this week (so an exact one week delay).
Nintendo Switch Online will be talked about during the presentation.
